Beautiful melody - marvelous page turning - foals, horses running, then the Lakota Lame Deer's quote - it doesn't get better than this, Uistmann - I'll forgive you for bringing us this! Superb!
Hi Nathalie. That was my thought too the first time I heard Banks of the Bann,. This instrumental version , is even more like " Be Thou my vision" and I think that's why Ilike it so much. :-)
@Lisnageeragh Since the lyrics of "Banks of the Bann" seem to exist only in English and include a reference to all the riches "that are in the East Indies" (alternative versions say "West Indies") its probably safe to assume the tune came originally from "Be Thou my vision" which in its original Irish version reputedly is composed by Dallan Forgaill in the 6th Century.
Thankyou very much for posting this, I'm currently learning the piece (the very same version by Martin Simpson) and it is wonderful to be able to hear how it should be played, beautiful pictures too
Guitar solos such as this one should make the scene a lot more often than they do. A lot of nostalgia around the horses. In Newfoundland when I was growing up, everyone had horses. We made hay, ploughed, logged, travelled, and did many other kinds of work with them. They were very faithful beasts.
Horses were still used in the islands when my mother and father were growing up too, but not everyone had horses. They would be shared between folk or paired where each crofter had one horse. Some of the photos are from Sable Island, as you probably know.
Now that you mention it I recognize the Sable Island landscape. I spent two years out there on an offshore supply tug. We got close enough to see the horses in binoculars a couple of times. They have evolved into a very unique breed of horses. Remarkable.
What a wonderful portfolio... horses and my favorite countryside that I have never seen...
Quote "For bringing us the horse we could almost forgive you for bringing us whiskey. Horses make a landscape look more beautiful." (Quote by Lame Deer, Lakota holy man.

Beautiful, imagery and audio.
My father used to play all of these "Irish Tunes" on his stereo while I was growing up, so I knew them by their Irish names.
We're "American Irish", but he served in Ireland in WW2.
Imagine the first time I stepped in to a protestant church and heard this tune called
"Be thou my vision"
Or for that matter hearing "Air from County Derry" sung as a hymn called "I cannot tell"

Thanks TimK1A. There is a beautiful version of "Be Thou My Vision" on "Healing Angel" by Phil Coulter and Roma Downey.

Lucky! I'll have to check his concert schedule; hadn't thought that maybe Martin would be playing here in the U.S. Thanks for the thought!

Hi Catherine
he lived in the states for a long while California and New Orleans.
I am lucky the UK is so much smaller than the U.S. that you can maybe see him a couple of times a year which is cool
He has a new CD out anyway if youi want anymore infomation about him let me know and I will try and get it for you
Regards

Another post that is longer thn it needs to be. Sorry about that folks. Fades to black after 3.12 or so.

No matter about the "fade to black"... Just watching this video is so wonderful and the kind of peace and quiet I need so badly at this point in time.
Love the beautiful music by Martin Simpson, and I was able to order a CD. Thank you so much; until now I had never heard of him.
My beloved grandfather Andrew Merrick and his brothers all told me about Ireland and I have always wanted to go there.
Thanks for the inspiration your wonderful videos provide!
