@bdcarlitosway Sports drinks are better. The sugar, caffeine and other junk in energy drinks will dehydrate you even more. My favorite is powerade 0. Their new ion4 fruit punch or whatever is pretty good.
i read somewhere after that first 30 min to hour stretch you should consume about 1 gram of carbohydrate per minute. a bar might have 40g of carbs, a drink about 35. i try to eat half a bar after ever 30 min w/a swig of drink or water every 15 or 20. i also freeze the drinks so they've thawed by the time i need them. i alternate (just for variety... and cost) between water and sport drink.
also... i eat the bars, i don't like gel stuff. never tried jelly beans though some say they chomps those.
@daddypants22 If you wanna lose fat, you need to do it over an extended period of time. If you choose bike rides to do this, I highly recommend eating before-during-and-after longer rides, it makes the time spent on the bike so much more enjoyable (and you will perform alot better).
@actionmethod I understand. I have lost 85 lbs cycling. I was just wondering if a big like myself (220) would just take in less calories while riding and not have my performance affected. Or will I hit "the wall" and not be able to get through it as well. I have hit it a few times out by myself and felt alright, but haven't had a race that was so difficult that I experienced it.
@daddypants22 The only way you will lose weight is burning more calories than you take in. Your body needs ~ 1700 calories a day, depending on your age and body structure, just to maintain all the functions needed for normal activities. If you ride hard, you can burn up ~ 600 calories per hour so you need to consume calories during longer rides of ~2 hours or more. I would cut down on the intake of fats and cut out all together anything with high fructose corn sirup.
@daddypants22 I think you should eat just the right amount of carbs and fat so that your body isn't completely starved of energy but at the same time you're still burning fat. If you don't give yourself any energy before you ride, you are limiting your potential and possibly harming yourself too.
@daddypants22 yes because with the exercise your metabolism with kick fire so not eating enough carbs and fat to burn through as energy than you could cause possible harm to yourself. i know this is a really late reply but its more for those seeing you post now more so that specifically for you >.<

How about an energy drink? Good or bad? Or is a sport drink better?

The problem with gels is you have to have water in the body. They are no good if you are dehydrating.

Also, what about food intake during the ride. Is it any different for wieght loss goals?
