Actually my Father, Larry Gaudet, of Halifax, played some lead guitar on this album, and he was the fortunate one to be in the water, holding the boat up for this picture. :O) John was a great Man, and I would say a wonderful entertainer. I spend many a weekend at the Campground In Nova Scotia, in Newfie's corner, enjoying the music.
WOW that`s a good 1 , i have heard different versions of this song , i think Smily Bates had a version of this song as well , as for it being a version of the song- The Butcher Boy- check this site out it has all kinds of info on The Dorymen look for Johhny Drake he was the front man for the band--

glad you found it,, youtube is a wonderful tool... ENJOY
I heard this song in 1968. Didn't know who sang it. I used to sing this at parties we'd have back in India. People used to ask me who sang this song and I'd no idea. I was a sailor myself and used to love singing this after a few whiskeys!!! I found this song today after 43 years. Does anyone else sing this? The other versions of A maiden's Song are all different. This was adapted from the song The Butcher Boy. I have my own tune and I've changed the last verse.
The year Johnny passed on we had a long discussion about this song because it was his arrangement of a 19th century British broadside ballad, The Butcher Boy. Thanks for sharing. :-)
