  • Lord, I'm going to have dreams tonight that I'm dancing like this.

Why couldn't we have this kind of show at Superbowl half time??

  • Amazing!

  • I like to see panties!!!

  • What an unbelievable dancer. Why can,t they produce shows today, like this. What happened to Hollywood. It s--ks. They think that science fiction and Hi Tech movies are great..

  • Vera Ellen; phenomenal dancer. But look at the physical effects Hollywood did to her body. She actually has some muscle on her in this but when you watch "White Christmas" she's as thin as a rail, there is no muscle on her what so ever in that. It's sad to see the amount of destruction society can do to a person..

  • How does she move like that? Can we bring some of that kind of talent back today?

  • i hold my breath everytime i watch this. that's amazing

  • AMA-ZA-ZING!!!

  • Every Morning I look outside my house and I'm looking at the House she grew up in; I have been tap dancing since I was 4.....hoping some of those dance moves blow my way.

  • Vera Ellen was underrated. She had a great style and was sexy too!

  • LOL, my feets are like made in stone or iron. gosh... this dancing is amazing.

  • goo question. I also would love to see new movies with tap dancing. Miss those classic MGM musicals.

  • Damn that was impressive. She's absolutely fantastic!

  • She was incredible!!!!

  • wow. unbelievable talent!

  • Its is incredible that she had the versatility to do this and to dance the modern "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet with Gene Kelly and to do passionate partnered ballroom and tap with Donald O'Conner and Fred Astaire.

  • damn those nerve taps

  • Her outift-3 is amazing~!! -3

  • Does anyone know what movie this amazing dance number is from? Please tell here, if you know!!!!

  • @sharonbrookshire8 Everyone is guessing White Christmas but it's really from Wonder Man (also with Danny Kaye). The full movie is currently available to watch legally and for free on Hulu.

  • The really sad thing is that in earlier films she was larger and healthier as you'd expect of a dancer of her skill and calibre - but there was a push for female stars to be 'more feminine' ie less muscular and so to work, she changed her body... The rest is history. So very sad - an amazing talent untouched by any today.

  • What is this from?

  • @katielady2012 I believe this clip is from "White Christmas" (1954). I could be wrong, though. Check out Vera's dancing with Donald O'Connor from "Call Me Madam" (1953) here on Youtube. They're so romantic and elegant together!

  • @rungirlmgg This is from 1945's "Wonderman" with Danny Kaye. There are some similar elements to "Mandy" in 1954's White Christmas. However, by then Vera was already beginning to suffer from anorexia and other problems. As a side note, she still is the youngest Radio City Rockette ever, joining them at 16 in 1937. She managed to have a daughter at age 41 in 1962. She died of SIDS and Vera never recovered from the loss.

  • @walt1896 I'm going to read her biography later this month. I can't wait! I love Vera.

  • She should have been as big a star as Fred Astaire. But ask around and a lot of people never heard of her. ><

Such a shame about her eating disorder. :( We lost such a great talent too soon.

  • How does her hair stay so perfect through that?!

  • She was awesome. I searched and found this link. Thanks for putting it out here.

  • mmm her tap dancing makes me feel very hard

  • No knock on SYTYCD, but I would like to see anyone of them try this tap number.

  • WOW! She is a REAL dancer.

  • She can dance, sing and act. This is a true triple threat.

  • Is that Hermes Pan dancing with her?

  • Such beauty elegance and charm. Best legs ever. And these bimbos today think they can dance. Ha!

  • Great legs!

  • @misse1027 this clip not part of white christmas

  • Not only was Vera-Ellen one of Hollywood's greatest ever dancers but she had the loveliest pair of legs I have ever seen as this video of her amply demonstrates

  • Shes the best!

  • to bad hollywood cares noting for musicals anymore....its a lost art form. or even more sad we lack the the culture to demand it.

  • damn she has a lot of energy

  • the sounds of her precious taps makes my pecker quiver mmm

  • ho.ly.cow. that girl has TONS OF ENERGY

  • She's beautiful!!!

  • So beautiful!!!

  • I wish the world was still like this..

  • How come I've never heard about her before?! She's just AMAZING: her technique, her stamina, her smile.... The best dancer I've ever seen in my life, that's for sure.

Every once in a while, I'm glad I stumble upon treasures like this :)

  • @Ligaene Again, She is one of the many dancers I used to watch on the big screen when I was a kid!! Magic to see her here! Thanks so much

  • Now THIS is what I call dancing! Vera Ellen is one of the greatest I've seen. This stuff needs to come back to Hollywood already and quit with the bullsh!t.

  • She's not a Barbie at all, she's a great dancer.

  • So jealous of her leg muscles and her incredible physique! Also keep in mind that back then they filmed dance sequences all in one take so her stamina had to be out of this world. Definitely one of my favorite dancers of all time.

  • Why don't people dance like this anymore??? Why does "So you think you can dance" do away with tap.. and why are people accepting this?? Movie musicals of today suck balls... again, today we seem to applaud mediocrity..

  • @spicedclay Grinding in the NEW it thing. Why? cause as years go on sexy is easy to sell and you don't a lot of talent to grind or shake ur ass.sighs!!

  • Wonder Man with Danny Kaye- 1945

  • I really love her dancing, but a lot of people have one thing wrong - Vera died from complications from anorexia nervosa. She had a really bad eating disorder . You can even see it in her thighs and hips - the bones where the two connect are visible (as in White Christmas) and no dancer with that amount of expertise would have thighs that thin naturally.

  • They don't make movies like this anymore. Today, she would be a fitness champion, with her great acrobatics, body control and slim but muscular physique.

  • @bvsfan I absolutely agree with you on that. I had no idea those were the type of shoes he used. Thank you.

  • que bonita!!!! porque rayos no la conocia?????

es magnifica muchisimo mejor que otras mas famosas.

  • Amazing that people think she is really skinny in this video. She is even skinnier in White Christmas. But she isn't unhealthy and boney. She has great muscle definition.

  • @SugarPlumL Actually, she died of complications from anorexia, and at the time this film was made, she was very, very ill, so I hope you don't think that is what healthy looks like.

  • @IsabellaSleeps Vera-Ellen Rohe died of cancer in 1981.

  • @johnrpgh And, she always was slight, due to childhood illness for which she took up dance. She was quite muscular in the 1940's though, before her troubles. You are right she did die of cancer at 60 in 1981.

  • Can anyone please kindly say that this beautiful dance number of Vera is from which film? will be really very grateful to that person..thanks in advance

  • I have always wondered if Hollywood sped up the flim for these great dancers and then matched the music accordingly. It is almost unbelievable that they danced this fast. The difference between a mediocre tapper and a master is that a master does not look as though there is any weight to the legs. Total balance and control.

  • mm i sure would love to tap her and her taps mmm

  • I can't stop laughing at her when she dances, it looks so weird. Her legs are like bits of white string that fling around the place loooooool

  • Very great dancer

  • beckylink

She is not too skinny. So beautiful!! Simply perfect is what she is.....PERFECT!

  • Amazing! :)

  • i do agree that she is very talented but a director once said that the reason she was not very popular as a screen actress is because she had an hard time not lookin at the camera!!! jus a bit of kno of for ya!!!

  • speachless

  • @w00fdawg Savion Glover has also tapped on the tips of his toes as well. It takes a lot of balance, strength and stamina as well.

  • @sugagirl1977 Savion Glove wears box toe tap shoes which is different than what Vera Ellen did standing ON her toes in flexible leather shoes with taps on them. Different tapping entirely, she was certainly the best dancer out there, her versatility is incredible!!

  • PS - I thinks she and Cyd Charisse are apples and oranges. Vera - perky and quick! Crazy rhythm. Cyd - beautiful lines, gorgeous legs, more sensual than perky. Both great dancers. Cyd never portrayed a frozen smile like other dancers of her era.. she remained ambiguous and playful, even seductive in her expressions.

There's a place for both in dance and film history, fortunately!

  • She's very talented and her sense of rhythm is unparalleled, but she is too skinny! I am a petite lady as well, small boned, and have nothing agst my own kind(!!), but she is downright bird-legged. It is well documented that she was anorexic. Those thighs are just WRONG. I don't think this would be accepted today, not in a dancer. maybe a model. But she is not supermodel material. Very special dancer though. I LOVE White Christmas! Rosemary's voice is so rich -how can u say "Rosemary who?"!!!

  • this was not from White Christmas

  • I am amazed - how can anyone tap while on tip-toes?

Such a shame that Vera-Ellen had such troubles in her later life, but here she is, showing us life's joyful side.

    Thank you for posting.

  • @w00fdawg I've done it in soft tap shoes. I think it's like pointes, where the toes of the shoes are very hard?

  • she is FANTASTIC!!!

  • I don't know how she didn't get a cramp in her feet doing those nerve taps, especially knowing how much she must have rehearsed this. It hurts just to watch it!

  • best praise for vera comes from both fred astrire and gene kelly who named her one of the best in the film " thats entertainment! "

  • Thanks for posting this vid, thanks to you I have found my new favorate dancer ever, she was an amazing dancer looking back at all the vids on YT. Very underated, I would say she'd rival Ginger Rogers any day, and she was good

  • um... my jaw is on the floor.

  • WHAT.

  • Vera-Ellen was by far the most talented yet underrated female dancer in films.

  • Wow! Good Grief!

  • Oh my God I am speechless. Vera-Ellen is my idol I have never seen such amazing dancing- she did it en pointe! That is near impossible! Words cannot do this mind-blowing dancer justice.

  • People who are saying this isn't Tap do not know what they are talking about. TAP IS ON YOUR TOES!!!! I agree with everyone else in that she was a brilliant dancer and Yes, we all know one of the origins of Tap was Irish, but they are completely different types now IE Irish do not use Arms/Upper Body movements. No Rows just making a point, I am a Tap Dancer, love it and appreciate and love Irish too.

  • U SUCK!

  • Insanity.

  • i love her facial expressions when she does the "nerve taps". she's like " ha ha ha oo. look at this. heehee this is fun. yay!"

  • Today's dancers cannot even come close to Vera Ellen's dance talent. She has the fastest nerve taps that I have ever seen! Doing nerve taps as quick as she does is extremely hard. I think Vera Ellen is the most underrated dancer ever.

  • i think she knows what she is doing!!!!!!:) that is so cool that she dancing on her toes i do tap but she is very very good love it

  • that aint tap dancing, its tapen ur toe on hard wood, i didnt even watch vids or take lesons, i just started tapen, and everyone loved it, its o k but it aint as good as good old fasioned irish river dancing that started this :)

  • Blimey... Wow.

  • @exeman99 I think she would rather be remembered for her beautiful talent rather than a mental disorder - which is how anorexia is classified. Wouldn't you?

  • i loved her in white christmas, too bad she had an anorexia problem before they even knew what it was

  • I love this woman so much. I have three little words (come on papa!) on the town (the miss turnstiles number was fabulous) and white Christmas (love her doing abraham!!!) so yeah

  • thats amazing

  • OMG! she is so awesome! why can't there be movies like this anymore! lol :D

  • wow those were some fine motorskills

  • she is my FAVORITE part of white christmas! rosemary who? haha jk, but Vera Ellen was such an amazing dancer! she is soooo thin though, by Hollywood's current standards she would be far more famous than she was in her day

  • What a wonderful talent she was.

  • She was AMAZING! I thought she killed it in White Christmas, but this is by far her best performance in my opinion...it showed her true capability.

  • wOw....!!!

  • jhunted7667 - Did not know about Fred Astaire & Vera Ellen! Wow. I can't blame Fred for trying. Thanks for that info! I just rented On The Town from Netflix and will be watching it today! :o)

  • This clip is from 'Wonder Man' , her very first film in Hollywood. Vera Ellen may have had the finest legs in the history of the universe.

  • Vera Ellen and Stacy Keibler. Both have incredible legs.

  • @ARJAY1962 I'll take Cyd Charisse and maybe some Ann Miller for $1000 Alex.

    Vera is a doll.

  • Vera-Ellen is the most talented dancer of her era. I liked her much better than her contemporaries (Ann Miller and Cyd Charisse). She probably doesn't get the recognition she deserves because of her painfully thin figure due to an anorexic disorder and her discomfort before the camera. It is such a shame. But at least we have the films and videos to remember her by.

  • you know fred astaire was very deeply in love with her they made 3 little words together he asked her to marry him but since she was like over 20 years younger her parents stepped in and nixed it

  • Her best work to me was in White Christmas, where they featured her on most of the dance numbers. She was a gifted performer but suffered from some mental and physical health issues after the death of baby. Does anyone know which movie this is? If so, could you please let me know, thank you. :-)

  • so gracefull on stage, and even during the toughest dance steps, her smile stays on! great composer!

  • What movie is this from?

  • Amazing

  • Amazing

  • no offense...but wasn't what she was wearing considered slutty for that day in age?

  • No! But she did suffer from anorexia

  • Vera Ellen was a living Barbie doll with taps on her toe shoes! I can't get enough of her!

  • I guess I'm too old for that (60); but I envy Gene Kelly in the movie "On the Town". His face was right in her best "asset" as she practiced upside-down at the barre.

  • the reason you guys may feel its a turn on is because she's dances with incredible speed and accuracy with the ultimate feminine touch plus she's wearing a mini skirt.

  • Today: Nobody could recreate this as well as Sutton Foster.

Sutton Foster could not recreate this today.

Vera-Ellen was the last of this (fantastic) breed.

  • she must be the carmen Electra of dance

  • Tap dancing on toes... Wow, I've done a bit of that, and it's painful to even be up there for a second, especially with soft toed shoes. Vera-Ellen is amazing!

  • her party piece which she called nerve taps

  • Lovely!

  • ya gotta love the look and the sound of her pretty shoe metal

  • her tap dancing turns me on

  • it's the leggs, isnt it.

  • yes her legs are very pretty and so tappy smooth
