Hi, nice video. I need to run two HDMI monitors (TVs) and a thunderbolt external hard drive. Can I run one TV via the HDMI output, and the second via a thunderbolt cable to the external hard drive then from the external hard drive to an HDMI adaptor then to my second tv? Also, can I run duplicate desk tops? i.e., dock and everything on both desktops? (My monitors will be in separate rooms.)
@dgdamore Hi, thanks for watching. I am not 100% sure if you can hook up 2 TV's via HDMI, it should work theoretically since you can purchase mini display port to hdmi adapters. I think the bigger problem will be hooking up the external hard-drive with thunderbolt. I do not really know how this is possible.
You can mirror the desktop on both displays as far as I know.
You are just like me! I just bought the quad core mac mini server 2011 and my second screen is also for xbox! How do I choose which screen has the dock tho?
@wiwinko97 If you go into 'system preferences' and then to 'displays' you should see two displays beside each other, one of them will have a little rectangle on top.
You need to grab this rectangle with the mouse and drag it to the other screen.
You mention that you were impressed with the performance of the integrated graphics. Can you shed some light on performance with dual monitors hooked up, and whether there is a lag working with programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom or others, with two displays hooked up at high resolution? My setup would be (for reference): Mini Server, two SSD's, 8GB RAM, and two 20" Apple Cinema Display HD's (HDMI > DVI + TB > DVI). Thanks!
@stebesplace Hi, unfortunately I do not own the Mac mini anymore but I did not notice any lag at all.
I think you really should not have any issues with the planned set up.
The question is if you really need the server version though since the higher regular configuration has better graphics. You might not need really need a quad core for those applications.
@TechCentury Right on. I picked the server because of the dual HDD configuration (versus needing to purchase some additional parts), plus the quad core for processor intensive needs (photo processing, calculations, etc.). I'm sure the dual core would work great though, given the dedicated graphics. Thanks for the reply!
@maxpain Unfortunately I have not had that chance yet.
It should definitely be powerful enough for those tasks though since I have edited a lot of my videos with my old iMac that was slower than this mac mini.
HI There - thanks for posting this. Very helpful. Just to recap my understaning, You have to use the smaller monitor to control / launch the mac applications and drag over to the TV Screen afterwards. Correct?
nice video! I was wondering if this Mac mini can run lion on one screen & windows os on another screen via parallel desktop or any dual boot software?
I'm getting one soon. so just wanna make sure it's powerful enough.
what size is on the left ?

So, the connection marked "ThunderBolt" is the "mini display port"? What are the adapter options to get that to go to a monitor? HDMI? DVI?
jrosekonungrinn 2 months ago
@jrosekonungrinn Yes exactly. Well there are dvi, hdmi and vga adapters as far as I know.

does mac mini have final cut pro?
RetroVanzTV 3 months ago
@RetroVanzTV Well it does not come pre-loaded on it.
You can purchase it from the App Store for I think 199$.
The machine is definitely powerful enough to run it.

have you got a chance to upgrade the ram yet? Also have you got a chance to see how it performs at video editing and rendering?

Fusionco 6 months ago
@Fusionco Hey, thank you very much.
There are a couple of different options:
1. you have the dock on the monitor and drag over the apps to the tv
2. you have the dock on the tv and they start on there (you can drag the apps to the monitor)
3. you mirror the screens so that they show both the same
I hope this helps,
Sebastian

@derekstech Yes exactly.

Only one thing there is no mini display port on the new mac mini!?!?
derekstech 7 months ago
@derekstech Yes it does have a mini display port, Apple only calls it 'thunderbolt' port now.

@retrogadus You are very welcome!
I was not sure about it either until I tried it.
It should also work with parallels, I am just not sure how fast it would be then.

TechCentury 7 months ago
you say "display port" but you ment "thunderbolt"? you put a display port adapter into thundetbolt port? thanks
b4l0rd0 7 months ago
@b4l0rd0 Well the port itself is a mini display port. So you can connect every regular mini display port cable.
It only has the 'thunderbolt' feature which allows really fast data transfers.

thetechfixer 7 months ago
@thetechfixer I like it a lot, it is very quiet but still more than powerful enough.
It is a great machine for a good price.
TechCentury 7 months ago
can you turn off 1 monitor and use just 1? and swich on 1 back and fort?
danshop 7 months ago
@danshop I do not think that is possible, I assume you will have to unplug the monitor in order to turn it off.
You could change which one is your primary monitor though so most applications would switch from one screen to the other.
