by far the greatest piano player like this.. not to say that there aren't many other players that aren't considered to be as crazy sounding as him and stuff, which can be just as or more influential than tatum, (i.e. Relient k).
I last listened to this U tube vid a year ago, as always the magic places me on another planet. There really is rainbows, lollipops and love as long we can listen to Art.
His playing never ceases to amaze! Just like Niagara Falls. No matter how many times you experience it, it leaves you speechless and breathless!! Art Tatum....WOW!
Since I was born in 1927 I have enjoyed Art Tatum's genius since I was about 12 years old. My older brother introduced me to him on 78 vinyls. When I was 6 my parents took me to see Fats Waller at the Blatz Palm Garden in Milwaukee . It sure was great in those early years of real jazz. Later big bands in theaters and Ballraooms WOW!!
@pinkieldred & mbase1235 : If this can comfort you, I've just seen several hundreds of comments under other videos with Tatum ! So all taste for beauty is not lost yet...
I am really discovering Tatum this evening. I have listened to several pieces, and this one is perhaps the most moving of all... Not "millions of notes per second", but rather simple (well, if I dare using the word simple for Sir Tatum !), so sensible... So pure and beautifull...
@Spipou ...Listen to "little man you've had a busy day" . But really to single out just one or 2 is absolutely ridiculous when it comes to Tatum. Every one of his recordings show pure genius!
11 comments on this video...makes sense! If it were some simple little melody with 2 chords sung by a sexy 16 year old kid it would get thousands of hits... Oh yeh, US the land of no culture.
I agree with this 100%. Only I would say that its the main culture that is so sad in the US. The US is so big and varied that it is possible for an essentially underground culture (such as that which produced Tatum) to produce truly great works, in the mist of the overwhelmingly mind-numbing banality of the majority. This is probably true in every field, not just the arts.
I'm not so sure about other fields? We make cars that get 300,000 miles on them, We have meds that keep you alive 100 years . We make buildings that dwarf the sky scrapers of years ago.We have communicative technology that seems impossible. In sports we have pros that are breaking all the older records. I could go on &on.. But in music as usual we haven't advanced at all.... yes the overwhelming mind numbing banality of the majority still dominates.
Goddamn! Got that right pinkieldred...what happened to skill in art?
Now it's just what Lester Bangs said...an industry of "cool"...too bad that our culture has died-I wonder if they are still listening to this is Paris...
I challange anyone to show me another jazz pianist playing "Out Of Nowhere" or for that matter ...any song... as well as the GREATEST JAZZ PIANO player of all time....Art Tatum
It's funny, I first heard of him in a serie on TV... that was... damnit! It was about a doctor that moves into a smale village in the mountains. He and his two kids I mean. And his son plays the piano. So one day the son meets this old guy who's a big fan of tatum.
Tatum makes every other famous jazz pianist sound like an amateur

Stride piano playing at its best. "Out Of Nowhere" is just one of those standards that I treasure. Always wonderful to listen to.

I love this version. Not too many runs but just enough and the chromatic ii v I modulations through tonal centers are a gas!

@pinkieldred Oh God I wish a hot 16 year old were playing this. Nothing makes jazz quite so right as a pair of underage tits.
