It's not body fat they are talking about, it's dietary fat. Dietary fat that goes into the muscle cells, not the fat cells, where normally it is turned into glucose to be burned. However too much, and the cell gets clogged so the insulin cannot let any more sugar in. Which is why skinny people can get diabetes too.
As for being a healthy diet, it is the healthiest diet on earth. Most bodies need to get used to a change in diet so they have what is called a crisis, while getting rid of toxins.
Vegan diet does not mean, in any way, HEALTHY. It only means NO MEAT. All real studies on diet and health, continually repeat: Whole Grains, Fresh Vegetables especially leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds, fruit . . . in that order. These studies have been repeated the world over and history shows its true. Want Health, Happiness, longevity, intelligence, spiritual facility? Eat according to the laws of nature. Want a roller coaster - follow fads. What'll it cost you to try for a month?
@tdelangre Vegan can only be healthy if you eat organic and once in a week some meat (also organic) But..this way we can't call it "vegan" anymore I suppose...
I tried once the vegan diet, and ran in all kind of health problems, since I really need the complex amino acids you only find in meat. If we like it or not, the human species are really omnivores.
@JurassikPerk I myself don't think there's anything wrong with eating processed food in moderation. But people can completely swear off processed food and still be vegan. :) It is not necessary to eat meat substitutes, tofu, soy milk, etc. to be vegan. One can eat whole grains, beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables...

Are these people stupid or something ? Diabetes is when your body can't lower your blood sugar (which is very dangerous because high blood sugar is toxic, your blood essentially becomes acidic and can damage the arteries and organs it runs through) because your pancreas can't produce (enough) insulin. Eating or not eating meat has nothing to do with all this, you can be a diabetic vegan and you can be a diabetic meat-eater.
I believe that obesity is a symptom of diabetes not the cause of diabetes. I was not overweight when I was diagnosed. I exercise and eat healthy diet but my body is getting fatter and the metformin medication does not help
@Morethanenough1 My diet has not changed and I am now on insulin twice a day. Since being on insulin I have gained 10kg. My daughter eats lots of junk food, never exercises and she cannot gain weight she is so thin people are shocked if she puts on swimmers. I have been trying to lose weight for 30 years, I eat healthy and exercise.
@JubblyJack Not everyone gains weight the same true, some ppl can eat junk and not gain(for a while) especially younger ppl. As you age you need to change your diet bc your matabolism changes. If you eat properly and excercise right, you wont gain weight. If you do gain weight you need to eat better or move more.
type II is not ONLY caused by having too much body fat....let's not misinform here...it is much more complex than that. thin adults can be "type II" too.
@turnerskelington talking about that. I am extremely skinny and borderline diabetes. The only way I can survive is to eat a few tomatoes and cucumbers/day. This Barnard guy is full of it by saying you can eat oatmeal and burritos lol yea right, lovely advice to diabetic people. Simple carbs are the worst, vegan diet is a good idea, but you have to stay away from sugars, including fructose. This means, no grains, no potatoes, no rice and so on.
@Morethanenough1 You may think it is good for you, it sure isn't good for the animals, all the grain they eat which could feed people, all the dung and methane gas. If that is "good" in your book, you just don't understand how much meat eating causes pollution. It is not good management of our planet.
Uh, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitis is caused by having too much visceral fat. ANY diet where you lose weight will "reverse" diabetes.
In fact, Atkins (opposite of veganism) "reverses" type 2 DBM even better because it reduces the down-regulation of insulin receptors caused by overeating carbs.
Of course, you could always EXERCISE, but I suppose that's just crazy talk.
palaterodeland.. thanks for your tips.. its very motivating and encouraging.. excellently said...I also did the same diet and lost 21 kilos in 3 months and without any exercise at all.. when i ate processed foods i exercised lots and couldn't lose any weight at all...

The entire "modern epidemic" of Type II is the biggest lie ever pulled over the eyes of the sheepish public. The "disease" and the "treatments" have been professionally designed, packaged and sold to the masses by big pharma for big dollars. I cured my Type II by stopping the intake of processed foods and replacing them with raw foods & some cooked fish. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. I still eat carbs, just healthy ones, no junk food ever.

A vegan diet is a terrible diet, full of processed soy milk and protein substitution. We are human we are supposed to eat meat? Paleo diet FTW!!!!
