Hello again Crudbucket... just a quick question, that Air starter on that V12 Paxman, what pressure was it running to turn over the engine... We've tried to start our V16 recently and that has 2 airstarters but they are supposed to run at 350 psi and so far we can only muster 100-170 psi which bearly turns the crank a quarter turn???
Hello Toontrain, I believe we were using a pressure of approximately 175 PSI to kick it over using a SINGLE air start motor, but then again ours was only a 12 cylinder, yours being a 16 I can see the need for another starter... it is possible your air reciever is not of high enough capacity to continually supply a high enough pressure to both starter motors? Cheers - Luke
Got a Paxman V12YHA that was fitted to HMS Rhyl as a genset engine, its mounted on a trailer & tours the vintage shows here in the UK mainly to peeve the putt putt squirt brigade! The engine is 60 years old & still makes me smile every time i open the start valve.
Found a V16 Paxman but i think my MRS would go for divorce if i bought another one one home.
No gripe against you dude! Theres alot of Valenta hype amongst the train spotters in the UK at the moment. If someone mentions the word Paxman, they all foam at the mouth and assume that the Valenta was the only engine Paxman ever built! The Valenta was just one model of many, mainly used in the UK's HST fleet.
Depends how you gauge hard... I would say it's fairly easy. AMC is a good college, having an awesome time down here with all the like minded people! are you considering coming down?
I pust ask as I'm a member of a Locomotive preservation group in the UK and we have a Paxman 16YHXL that we will hopefully be starting up before the end of the year :) seeing as this engine of yours started up with such ease it bodes well for our engine when we get to push the button for the first time ;)
Is that a GE FDL in the background or an EE?
A couple of exhaust manifold strongbacks were loose on one of our Alco 251's, same results. Kinda hot to tighten when the damn thing's idling.

I think the engine in the background is a Cleveland Diesel. Probably a 16-278A (2-stroke)

Yep pneumatic starter motor FTW

BIG difference! Marine Engineers get paid a hell of a lot more :D

Paxman it maybe but its nothing like a Valenta.
Exhaust manifolds are on the wrong sides of the cylinder banks for a start, this has 2 turbo's instead of the single turbo thats on a Val.

What is your point? Am I missing something?

is that engine a Paxman 12YHXL perchance??
Toontrain 4 years ago
It is quite likely, since it is a 12 cylinder
