I used to look at this when I was ten. The show was one of the very few that included any other types besides blacks and whites. in the late nineteen sixties, many efforts were made to infuse blacks into the previously all-white shows of the era. Now there is a closing off of other non-black minorities as central characters as new laws such as the adaa are being ratified. I feel sorry for children today because they will be the hardest hit by the new martial law police state that is emerging.
These cartoons were based on Morrie Turner's pioneering comic strip, "Wee Pals". The strip started in 1965 and is still running strong in over 100 newspapers nationwide. This Rankin-Bass series was around from 1972 to 1974.
Here's a show from the Rankin/Bass stable that should be out on DVD. For some reason Classic Media through it's deal with Vivendi Entertainment has been reluctant to put this out as with The Reluctant Dragon And Mr. Toad, The Smokey The Bear Show and The Tomfoolery Show.
Wow, i havn,t seen this cartoons in ages! I love to looked up old stuff from the 60s and 70s.It can be old music videos or old T.V shows from that time frame.
I had a halloween costume of that leader kid, complete with cheap plastic apron with the logo and the front-only plastic mask and the rubber band that only a little less painful than a cigarette burn and you worried all night trick or treating that the staple holding it together would fail.
I so remember this as a kid. wow...me & my cousin used to imitate the dance the kids are doing. lol. this was back in the day when it seemed like the US was promoting racial harmony. it was quite common to see PSA's & TV shows w/ a similar inclusion type of vide. Racism was considered very old fashioned & backwards in the 70's. Geez what in hell happened?
@ciccocenta The "MORAL MAJORITY". It all started with California Propisition 13, which led to the Reagan Revolution, which led to "No New Taxes", which led to the Neo - Cons (George W. Bush Jr.'s Neo Conservatives), which led to the Tea Party, Which led to the Debt Ceiling Stalemate, which will lead to the Mad Max nightmare on August 3, 2011. The world is going to go to hell without firing a single ICBM!
Omg, to this very day this damn song occasionally plays in my 41 yr old mind. It is exactly as I remembered it. Why I looked this up I have no idea. That just means it'll jammed into my skull for another lifetime. Nooooo!!!
wow this really brings back memories i agree with u moxie this need to be seen by kids of this generation that way the messages from that era is needed for today
Only 1 season? Drat, must've been a ratings flop. I guess Schoolhouse Rock was more successful. Shame though, great concept---teaching racial tolerance and other high moral values thru Saturday morning TV.
And now we live in doubly ignorant times when no one wants to use network TV to teach children ANYTHING anymore, for fear of lawsuits for "offending people."
Bad economy, or just lazy, morally bankrupt TV execs? You do the math, if you still can.
@JKSpiero I think kids these days should be watching cartoons like this because some are really insensitive, exactly what this show wanted to stop happening. Sometimes when I go down some streets it's like the civil rights movement never happened or all those kids feel they are so young it has nothing to do with them or feel it's a failed concept or plain ignorant and don't care. Occasionally I do hear kids stop their friends from hurling racial comments but usually it's collective giggles.
Sadly, the big excuse most frequently used by today's programmers is: "it's not current, so today's kids would never connect." That's just selling youth short. Do you really care if a cartoon is old or not, if you find something about it you like? Neither would they. Suits don't just lie to us; they lie to themselves, too. Turn 'em off, cut the cable, join the YouTube revolution.
Based on the STILL active comic strip "WEE PALS" by Morrie Turner; Designer for the programme was Paul Coker (who pretty much designed every little show for Rankin-Bass). Only aired for 1 season on ABC-TV...BUT...believe it or not, MGM's LP subsidiary "PRIDE" put out an ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK LP of the show!
Just hearing this song again just brought some tears and fond memories . I was in the 10th grade when this came on and I used to love to sing along with them when the show would come and my brothers would tell me to shut up and watch or they would change the channel ( we only had one color tv back in those days ) and I was at their mercy . Thanks for the trip down memory lane ! Kid Power lives on !!
I grew up watching this. So cool to see it on here! The song is actually a pretty cool sounding rock themed tune and the vocals are great! Very cool to this day!!
Diz, African-American boy who wore sunglasses and a beret. Sybil, A.A. girl and friend of Connie. Paul, Hispanic boy. Rocky, Native American boy. Jerry, Jewish boy. George, Chinese boy. Trinh, Vietnamese boy. Wellington, Boy with hair covering his eyes. Sally, Deaf mute girl. Mikki, 4 year old A.A. girl. General Lee, Nipper's puppy.
In this politcally correct climate we live in today why isn't KID POWER aired more on televsion? Wouldn't a show like this be acceptable to pc media elite even it was produced almost 40 years ago?
I watched this as a child when it came on ABC on Saturday Mornings. I don't remember the characters' names, but I do remember the big brown-haired boy, Ralph. He was a bully and usually got the gang into trouble.
Thank you for viewing this.Every since when i was a kid i watch this everyday and it been in my head since then.I thought i'll never see this again untill now.Much Love.
Thank you for posting this song. It's been in my head for 20 years. I haven't heard it since 1974, when I was 8. Thank you for the memories, and it was a good show.
This was one of my most favorite cartoon series of the 70's. Each show featured a good leraning lesson on how to be accepting of others. Would love to see this on DVD.
The voices in this cartoon are were kids of famous parents like April Winchell who was the daughter of voice actor Paul Winchell and Jay Silverheels Jr. whose father played Tonto on the Long Ranger series.
@culpit How ironic is this fact! Kid Power aired on ABC with April Winchell, opposite Runaround; an NBC game show hosted by her father, Paul Winchell. It was father opposite daughter.

Nipper, the little black kid, not only wore a civil war hat. They had him holding and waving a southern confederate flag.

Somehow the character design looks like it may have been done by Paul Coker, Jr (MAD magazine & some Rankin-Bass productions like
Frosty the Snowman).or similar. Not sure if that strip (Wee Pals) is still around or not

First of all, GOD! I'm so old to even remember this. Here are some of the charactors I remember.
Ralph, the bully.
Oliver, the Charlie Brown charactor who wore glasses.
Connie, the Lucy/feminist charactor.
Nipper, the little black kid who wore the Civil War hat.
Randy, the black kid with the mid-size Afro.
That's all I can remember except this was a great show to watch and I wished it stayed on a little longer.
