  • i found a few in my garden and they all like to have a shit on me !!!!!

  • Awesome, we found one of these slow worms in our garden today and had no idea it was a limbless lizard, the kids and i have learned something very cool today and as they are so rare we feel privileged to have seen one!

  • You have a great presenting style---could do TV!

  • They certainly are beautiful and so very placid

  • Yo I found one the other day. It has a weird tail and is small compared to a snake.

  • Cool man,.... i work on cross country pipelines and have never seen one until last week when i saw two in as many days. Just outside Chippenham in some woodland where we were surveying. Very nice too... the one i saw has different colouring to that you have there... and was smaller...

  • hi ben i live in leeds and i think slow worms are adorable will i be able to find one because i realyi want to see one up close. i really like your vids thanks.

    jack

  • @reptileman999 Hi Jack, thanks for watching and commenting. You should definately be able to find a slow worm around the Leeds area. I had a very brief look on the internet and saw that Chevin Forest Park to the North-West of you has a fair few slow worms. Also, there are alot of golf clubs around you. Come spring, the edges of these may be great for slow worms. Have a look on your local 'wildlife trust' website and there should be more info.

Let me know if you find any. Happy hunting!

    Ben

  • where do you find one plz

  • Hi, great vid :)

just wondering, when I find one, are they tame and will I be able to just pick it up (with given respect) or is there a technique?

  • @B2004138 Thank you. They are very docile and happy to wrap around your fingers for a short while. Try to avoid touching their tail and always support them well and be gentle, as you say. Good luck finding one - you'll probably have to wait until march/april now, but keep me posted! Cheers,

    Ben

  • i luv em i used 2 hold em wen i was young!!:)

  • i go slow worming i like to look at them there amazing another great vid

  • i have found lots of newts and frogs in staffordshire and would like to know if i can find them here.

  • another big problem for slow worms is cats. Please keep your pets indoors. It's better for their health, and the environment

That's a female you have there. beautiful specimen!

  • You remind me of Steve Irwin. Very thorough in your explanations, and reverent and gentle to the animal. Thank you for sharing this darling animal with us!

  • wat do they eat? can you have em as pets?

  • @Poolfeather I'm not sure about slow worms, but their cousins, a larger species known as scheltopusik, or glass lizard, can be kept as pets. From what I've read, they cost about 200 American dollars, they require considerably less care than many exotic lizards, they are sociable and can be kept in groups, and their adult size is 3-4 feet.

  • @PhoenixBorealis ooh! thanks :) im just crazy about reptiles. any animals in general :)

  • @Poolfeather Me to! I have a nice list of animals that I want to own in the future, and the scheltopusik are very near the top.

  • Hey I found a grass snake in my garden log, what should I feed it?

    BYE ben!

  • @simplemagickids Insects such as crickets, meal worms, and super worms. Also, Vitakraft Reptile Gammare (a can of tiny crustaceans) are good for many reptiles. They can be fed pinkys when they grow large enough. Also, some greens and fruits may be given if desired, but keep in mind that they are mainly carnivorous. Keep in mind that they do not stretch like a snake does, so use caution when feeding them larger prey items.

  • Nice Vid. Sorry to hear they're threatened. Have you thought of giving talks at gardening clubs to encourage gardening practices that may accommodate these lizards?

  • Dude, you should be a host or something or an nature show for BBC or animal planet! you could be the next David Attenborough!

Beutifal lizard, it seems so kind og innocent compared to those vile snakes =P

  • @ManvsMachine7 Snakes aren't so bad. My brother has a ball python, Xela, and she is a very affectionate reptile; not head or tail shy, never bites, constant tongue flicking (which actually means they are not nervous or uneasy, and atre less prone to bite). We also used to have a king snake name Solamon, who was also affectionate, and really quite lazy. She was really pleasant with children and didn't even squeeze when placed around the neck. It all depends on how you raise them.

  • I saw one of these down my local park yesterday, it crawled straight slong the pathway which i thought was very strange as it completely exposed itself. we picked it up and put it back in a field though. They really are magnificent animals.

  • nice vid. i got 2 pet slow worms :D

  • Slow worms have gotta be the best lizards there so cool i havnt got one this year tho but in the summer i definately will find some.

  • that thing is sooo cute! i was wonding if if was possible to find these in the south east? i love wildlife but i live in a large town so i don't get to see much wild life.

  • @darkfire3089 Absolutly - the south east is where I found this guy. It's the best part of the UK to find reptiles, apart from the south coast. You will need to get yourself out to a patch of heathland nearby and search there. Good luck and thanks,

    Ben

  • @benwaddams hello. i live in Birmingham. could you tell me what sort of wildlife i can find in parks, fields or even a garden. i live quite near the Lickey hills nature park so i could look there.

thanks for any help you can give.

  • used to be hundreds...but people killed them and kept them as pets, can be found in spring/summer under grass cuttings or tin roofs(were he found his)

usually found in britain (England and wales usually)

  • i love slow worms!!

  • Thanks Ben. Nice post. Keep up the interest. You have a way of communicating your subject that is interesting and educational.

  • @DEROUGET Thanks mate, v kind of you and I'm glad my info is fairly well presented. Cheers,

    Ben

  • Where can I find one of these? Never seen one before in real life so would like to see it up front. Don't worry won't keep one, my boyfriend is terrified of any reptiles... Nice post

  • @ShearaCamacho Hey, thanks for watching. Slow worms can be found right across the uk. they prefer heathland, so do a bit of searching on the net for heath habitats near you and that will be very good place to search come summer :)

    Ben

  • i wanna find who but i doubt they are anywere :(

  • Slow worms are great! Thanks for posting this. Is there anything we can do to stop their decline?

  • excellent presentation,future tv presenter,maybe

  • I found one yesterday but it was dead :( Beautiful little things though :)

  • it's anoying because they're not worms and their not slow!!! lol

  • Great accent :)

  • So nice to see someone who appreciates wildlife, great video mate really appreciate it, got a hint of steve irwin in you ive noticed lol i live in london and found one of these in my garden a couple of days ago like many i mistook it for a snake but with the help of urself and google ive learnt something new, thanks again.

  • I found a slow worm yesterday only a little baby id say about 15 cm long but it was lovley i loe these things and great vids!!

  • I so loved this normally this kind of this is done on here and is really shot well done mate I loved it and I learnt something from this video as well. Well done I hope to see much more from you.

  • Thanks mate, that goes straight to my heart. I'm really glad. I'll be doing more shortly. Thanks for the support,

    Ben

  • hi ben im interested in your videos.the other day i saw a baby adder in devon just thought i might let you know.

  • Saw a crow attacking one in the middle of a road today.

Have loads of slow worms under the slabs at the bottom of my garden, they're beautiful

  • Good vid you David attenborough wannabe :P

    just kidding

  • I WANT ONE AS A PET

am going to go find one =)

cos I dont want a snake because I wont be able to feed it rats and stuff. >.> ewy

  • Its illegal m8 :P, u can get fined £1000 kinda sad i guess :/ x

  • Its illegal to kill, injure, sell or offer to sell slow worms but not to take them. You can sell CBB 3rd generation-if you can prove it.

I think most people respect them enough to leave them where they are.

    Good vid btw.

  • I just moved to France and while working in my vegtable garden I founfd one of these beautiful creatures. We did not know what it was so we looked it up on the internet and found all these great results. I am happy to have her in my garden, it was a great find.

  • where in france do you live

  • I live in Villelaure, France a small town outside of Aix en Provence. I have not seen her since but she is keeping the snails away for sure.

  • where can i find a slow warm ive never seen one???

    i am from Germany xP

  • also they protected arnt they?

  • I think we've found a replacement for Steve!

  • haha, hiya mate, high praise indeed!! But I would never want to 'replace' Stevo...being inspired by him is good enough for me and I hope others can be too. Thanks mate,

    Ben

  • I used to find them under debris on the railway enbankment in summer. they move rapid when startled.

  • and, I live in the country too O_o

even more, theres loads of streams, rivers and grass

  • I am 10 years old and in all my life I have NEVER seen a slow worm in the wild by my self

  • taking over Steve I see>>?? l.ol!

  • were abouts can i find them (i live in scotland)

  • ah i always wondered wot those things were as a kid haha i think everybody has seen a slow worm, from livin in the city to the country everyone gets to have em around

  • i found one of those in my garden yesterday, is their only one type of slow worm? the one i found looks TOTALLY different to that one, great vid by the way mate.

  • btw i have photos, if you are interested.

  • Great stuff mate! You're very lucky to have some in your garden. Yes, in Britain there is only one species of slow worm. Around the world there are many, but they tend to be given the name 'glass lizards' on account of their smooth bodies and no legs. Female and males look quite different here, so I expect you saw a male, which is more silver in colour and sometimes has blue specks on his sides - beautiful! The young are bright copper/brass colour. Would love to see the photos. Cheers mate

    Ben

  • i also have had newts (common i think), toads and frogs, i think i have them because i never do any gardening! its like a jungle, the one i found yesterday is a light brown colour, very long and thin, if you msg me your email i will send you some photos, is it the right time for adders yet? i have been looking for them before and not found them, but this time i am determined to though, i live in Essex and there are loads of places they are known to be-

  • -i had a look at some of your other videos, i think its great that their are people so intested in UK wild life, have you ever seen a smooth snake? i could find a video of one.

  • awsome, my sis thinks your a cutie! sorry my sis realy wanted me to tell you that for some realy realy odd reson

  • Haha, heya mate, thanks!! Wish I could say I get that all the time, but I don't. Anyway, i'm leaping to conclusions, I'm sure she was talking about the slow worm, not my ugly mug! Cheers mate,

    Ben

  • she ses cut your tounge your fricken cute. haha sorry she is bugging me for days and days to say that

  • Thanks to your sister then! Lol, cheers mate,

    Ben

  • Yeah,Cheers

  • Also another difference you could have noted, I believe snakes don't have a sense of smell, where as lizards often do. The same thing goes with the legless lizard, in comparrison to a snake it has the two nostrils on the tip of its head.

  • used to see these a lot when i lived in devon, some of the larger ones had turquoise dots on their backs, very nice

  • Ah, those would be the big males. They have the specs of blue to appear more attractive. Great stuff. Thanks for watching :)

    Ben

  • good video but the editing sucks

  • Yer, I'm not so hot with that side of things I'm afraid mate, but I just went on a course, so my new vids...when it warms up a bit on this damn isalnd!....should run better. thanks for the comment,

    Ben

  • GREAT!!! this a fuckin video!!! we have a lot here in portugal!! i really like your video , very didatic!!! congratulations!!

  • Hello mate, thanks alot. Portugal sure is a great place for reptiles! Cheers,

    Ben

  • This proves that british wildlife is not as boring as you think! Haven't seen one of them before though.

  • Absolutly!! I couldn't agree more. All our herps are, in my eyes, way too underrated. Glad you liked looking at them. Even though they're fairly common round me, each and every one still fascinate me..everytime! Thanks mate,

    Ben

  • AND slow worms have ears, snakes don't ;)

  • Indeed they do. sorry mate..heat of the moment and all that!! Cheers,

    Ben

  • Thanks for your kind words!

We've created many shelters for them in the past years and they are taking advantage of it.

Last fall we found some juveniles.

I'll update you on our finds as soon as they get out of hibernation

  • Please do mate, thanks alot and good on ya!

    Ben

  • Looks like you love Anguis fragilis or slow worms the same way I do!

I spot them quite frequently in the woods around here.

    Beautiful, gentle creatures!!!

  • They sure are mate, and yup, I love 'em! They need all the friends they can get, more people like you. Thanks for the comment mate and keep up the good work/spotting!

    Ben

  • haha all that jewellerry - im surprised you can lift your arm up[:O! haha

nice find - i really love slow worms - only ever found one though, a 3-4 inch neonate (wednesday 16th august 06)

  • lol, yer i'm afraid its all from different parts of my travels, kinda a constant reminder to go back i guess. Never found any neonates, but then again I don't like to disturb the slow worms around here more than a few times a year, but great find mate :), hope you can repeat it this year. Cheers Erik,

    Ben

  • yea little reminders tht are always with ya cool man

yea i was walking up a path (from finding the viviparous lizard i found) back to where i found the adders and it just floated out of the grass was amazing - some folks came past so i gave em a little herp lesson haha

  • Hey great stuff!! Need more people like you around. Nice 1 mate,

    Ben

  • hey man thanks - means a lot dude :D

    Erik

  • well in ca i was thinkingaboute getting on they are not common in pet stores but i will have one in a month

  • You look like your in an erea where you can hunt any snake for free and not illegal and nobody works there, my place is like that place and its called Snake Hill

  • Good name! This is at a nature reserve near me in the Chiltern Hills. I am doing a bit of research there and so am allowed to have a quick look at some of the reserve's wildlife up close and personal, every now and then - love it! Thanks mate,

    Ben

  • Nice find man.

    Real nice size too.

Seemed rather docile, they normally thrash or poop, or both :|

    HaHa.

    Cool Vid!

  • Cheers mate, yep a lovely specimen thanks.

    Ben

  • Yep :) they are rapidly becoming my favourite British reptile! And the great thing is you can find them in any weather during the summer. Its pouring with rain in the UK and I found this guy less than 5 hours ago. Thanks Bill, they certainly are really cool!

    Ben

  • wow! those guys look really cool!
