So glad to find this today when I had an inexplicable craving to see this scene (also shown to me as training, though I was Navy, not a Marine). It's so beautifully executed. I love how proud the Marine officer is to salute and agree that his President is mad. Perfect!
It is a classic. I had to really search for this scene when I needed a little reminder of how we used to be instead of the paper tiger that we are now.
This never happened in real life. A small contingent of marines landed to protect the American Embassy, they didn't shoot up the palace and kidnap the sultan.
The nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror sank Belgrano on 2 May. Three hundred and twenty-three members of Belgrano's crew died in the incident. Over 700 men were rescued from the open ocean despite cold seas and stormy weather. Losses from Belgrano totalled just over half of Argentine deaths in the Falklands conflict.

its a lot of fun to watch, I dont get tired of it. But, it is weird that some people take it so seriously as a symbol of US power
Besides, the only mistake President Bush made was not nuking a ring around Afghanistan and marching them inward! Then we wouldn't have had to worry about Saddam (or anyone else). Look at how fast Momar Kadafi turned around and begged for mercy!
You will never know what motivated "Mr. Bush" (as the media insultingly call him) to take these actions. You don't have access to the classified material and you don't have the weight of the country on your shoulders!
Funny, it is always President Obama now. Never a "Mr. Obama". The American Media Sucks!
When I went thru OCS and then TBS in Quantico for Marine Corps officer training, I must have been shown this clip about 25 times as start-of-class motivation material.
I would have preferred the contingent to have been a company of my brothers in baggy pants. But given the time frame, that wouldn't have been very reasonable!
Really? Did Adams cry when his successor, Jefferson, went to war in North Africa? Nope. Adams, in fact, demanded that the USA build a navy to go to war with them.
makokun9, John Adams wouldn't cry, he would be PISSED OFF at what America has become. We're just too "civilized" to fight wars properly or to oppose the savages in our streets.
At least we'll have these scenes to watch and the memories of our once great country and her proud military. I fear though, that our newly elected chairman will gut them both. I pray it is not a fatal blow.
We can also reminisce about how great the Republic was before the Clone Wars and the transition to the Galactic Empire. The connection, you ask? Both the scene above and Star Wars have the same amount of historic accuracy. Still a great scene, though.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I needed the same boost, that is why I made it. ;-)

That's Great! It is motivational, but I guess after 25 showings it might get old?
Anyhow, I still love it and I love the U.S. Marines!

This is such a great scene...Good ole ass whoopin' Americana....the way it should be.
Fuckin' shame what we've become. We used to have that Joe Namath underdog swagger. We've forgotten that we really still are the true underdogs.

John Adams would cry if he read what you wrote.
Asshole.

I don't think he would. Why would you say that?

True, the film is a joke in terms of historical accuracy, but that doesn't take away from its entertainment value IMO.
