I learned in Psych class a while ago that when circumstances don't fit the beliefs you hold true to yourself but you can't get out of the sticky situation, you are stuck with a little something referred to as 'cognitive dissonance'. Basically, think that the audience doesn't exactly know what to make of his genius rant. What's an appropriate reaction? They don't know what to think. So they laugh nervously to make up for the lack of a real comfortable response.
