Can you believe this is the first time I've seen the play in its entirety? For good reason: NFL Films butchered it when they cut right into Willie Brown's face-and doing it in slow motion as a way to add insult to the injury.
The 1976 Raiders - a team that will always be in the shadows of the mighty 1970's Pittsburgh Steelers - the greatest dynasty in the history of the NFL....loving it!
@morleygrey LOL - yeah, and if the Raiders had Dan Rooney as their owner, they would have 6 rings today and have the most dominating fan base in the history of sports. LOL! Dumb ass Raiders fan.
The merger opened the door for the Steelers. I have respect for both teams, but facts are facts, the steelers had a handful of winning seasons and only ONE playoff appearance in 38 years in the pre-merger NFL.. That was in 1947. Some Steelers fans downplay any NFL history before 1972. Because it was just to painful. It all counts the good bad and the ugly.
And well deserved, all the Steelers SB wins are well deserved. My point is Dan Rooney could not win a title in the NFL until after the merger in 1974. And then he won 4. Why did it take so long??? Look at the Steelers bad draft picks from 1963-1968 and then the amazing run from 1969-1974. The merger was already a done deal before the 1969 season started. The merger changed the game, the Steelers would never have had those draft picks without the merger happening.
Between 1963-68 the two best picks are Andy Russell and Rocky Bleier.
Between 1969-74 they picked, Joe Green, L.C. Greenwood, Joe Kolb, Terry Hanratty, (1970) Terry Bradshaw, Ron Shanklin, Mel Blount, (1971) Jack Ham, Frank Lewis, Mike Wagner, Ernie Holmes, Larry Brown, Dwight White, Gerry Mullins, (1972) Franco Harris, Steve Furness (1973) J.T. Thomas, Loren Toews (1974) Lynn Swan, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, Mike Webster, Jimmy Allen
@TommyC503 Not to Raiders fans. I still have fond memories of this Super Bowl. Thats the great thing about winning a SB. No one can EVER take it away from you. Many of the players off those great Raiders and Steelers team are no longer with us. John Matusak, Dave Dalby, Neal Colzie, Jack Tatum, Gene Upshaw from the Raiders, Mike Webster, Dwight White, Joe Gilliam, Ray Mansfield, Steve Furness have all passed away.
as a kid, i love don meredith even though he ahd played with the cowpies. i thought he was being silly and joking around a lot. it wasn't until i got just a little older than i realized he was always shitfaced! but still enjoyed him. i am so glad john madden has retired. they were times i swear when i would just turn the damn sound off because i could NOT stand him! He acted like no one had ever watched a football game and knew nothing! 33 yrs I have watched and I won't miss madden. well bye!
Was this the last Super Bowl game played fully in daylight??? I know that most Super Bowls played in the West Coast usually starts late afternoon and finishes in the early evening hours, when darkness sets.
Yes. Super Bowl XII was the first SB to be played in primetime, although of course, it was in the Superdome. This was the last game to start and end in the daytime.
Yes. The only other ones I know of that started in daylight were Super XIII and XVIII, which finished in darkness, and Super XVI, which was played indoors.
I remember that game! Oakland just manhandled the Vikes! It breaks my heart to see my Vikes lose their 4th Super Bowl game! McClanahan's fumble at the Raider 2 yard line changed the momentum in Super Bowl XI! Great Video!
In fairness to the Raider's,it's hard to say if the Vikings would have scored, then the outcome would've been different. But if that fumble did to the Vikings on the field what it did for me in my house, 32 yrs ago. I can tell you ithey must have been totally deflated by it. I'd rank that fumble as the single most tragic play in their history. ( Forget Gary Anderson in 98' )
I bet it bothers Mcneil to this day that he didn't pick the ball up and run in the endzone with it instead of falling on it at the 2 yard line. It was just him surrounded by about 4 other vikings when he got to the ball.
I've never considered that obvious possibility you bring up. He, in fact, could have picked up the ball. I just saw the video right now. Only Vikings were around. Now it's even MORE upseting!!
His decision however, goes along the lines of a typical Bud Grant team.Play smart, get the ball then we'll worry about scoring. The ball had already taken a freak bounce, I guess McNeil figured better safe than sorry.
BTW, he is a pacticing attorney in Minnesota today.
man i just met him yesterday. at first we were upset that someone was at the spot where we wanted to fish and i kind of recognized him from the car and then he said he was willlie brown... i was honored to meet a true raider legend he was a very cool guy
Listening to Curt Gowdy and Ray Scott, they were actually kinda overrated to me. Gowdy has ONE signature call from what I've heard of him...and that's the Sea of Hands catch by Clarence Davis. And shoot, Don Meredith and Al DeRogatis put the mustard on that call
Pat Summeral I think is beyond overrated. Listen to his call of the Patriots kicking the game winning field goal against the heavily favored Rams. BOOOOOORRIIIIINGGG!!!!!
LOL...I can understand where you're coming from. I just liked how Summerall sounded. Before he sobered up, he just reminded me of a drunk uncle who just wanted to be left alone lolol. But he always had an animated analyst, first Brookshier and then of course, John Madden. Maybe that's why he was so understated.
I thought Gowdy's signature call was "Look ahhhhout" when a rusher got close to blocking a punt. What the broadcaster actually says doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I mean, heck I can see what's happening! Don't need to be told Willie Brown intercepts Tarkenton. What IS importnat is simpley the sound of their voices.Gowdy and Derogatis, always remember them calling the AFC playoffs. Or Charlie Jones, Sumerall & Brookshire etc.Just hearing their voice takes me back to a perfect place & time.
don meredith ruined this call with his drunk ass, thankfully he left for ABC after this game

Willie Brown is the best CB the Raiders ever had......and he hitted like a safety.

@925jdb Yeah they could have used him and Tatum in 2003, when the Bucs destroyed the Raiders---they hitted the Raiders like bitches.

Yea, they did have a dynasty in the 1970's, but If it wasn't for the merger in 1970, they would still be at the bottom of Forbes Field.

there werent any steelers fans before 1972 I hate steeler fans for the exact same reasons
