Most young kids think that the television series "China Beach's" theme song is the best ever. Well it is because it's the Supremes' "Reflections" but this is the first time they've heard it. Reflections and Nathan Jones are two of the Supremes' best songs.
. . I ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT GIVES IT THAT SOUND EFFECT AT THE BEGINNING " SOUNDS LIKE A PLANE LIFTING OFF OR SOMETHING ? . . LOL . . I'M YOUNG BUT A BIG FAN OF THE SUPREMES . . THIS IS ON OF MY FAVORITES . . ALSO THE SECOND VERSE . . @ 1:10 - 1:32 AND @. . 1:37 - 1:45 . .THE OFFISH BEAT ARE THOSE HAND CLAPS . . ? . . I WAS BORN IN 1980 BUT I LOVE THEM LIKE I WAS OF THIS ERA . .
I happen to like this song too. I thought the use of the spiriling "lift-off" effect was great. I learned that this effect is called "phasing" or "flanging" and is produced by playing two copies of the same song simultaneously. One copy of the song will be very slightly slower than the other, producing the swirling sound. A recording engineer told me this. For a better but lengthy explanation, look for this technique on Wikipedia.
Miss Mary took the Greyhound to New York?, Which house did she "Bring Down", was it a Crack House? Is she still a Junkie?, How fat is she these days Detroit?
To ronaldrkmartinmartin, you don't know great stuff from shit! This kinda music made millions of people happy and is still popular today nearly 40 years on from its beginnings! Betcha life you won't be remembered so fondly!!!!!!!
"Nathan Jones" and "Touch" two great songs from The Supremes "TOUCH " Album one of their BEST! My favorite song from the album is "Love It Came To Me This Time" should have been a single, and "Here Comes The Sunrise" and the b-side to "Nathan Jones" - "Happy is a Bumpy Road".
Wow I must say, much much props to who ever created this video. It is indeed a work of art. Lol, I like to get stoned and just sit back and watch this video. I even got a few of my buddies into this song, and people my age do not even know who the Supremes are, but we all love this video. Anybody got any background info on the creator of this masterpiece?
Lord, are people still debating this? We don't know what happened. Only those involved do. Just listen to the music. The Supremes rock! Just wish things went different for Flo. :'(
i think a lot of people remained interested in the supremes but i think without diana it just went bellyup. i think a lot of people are undersetimating the strength of diana as a dynamic entertainer.
This one SHOULD have put them right back on top, it is a FIERCE cut. It's a crime of the first degree that Motown (BG) did not give the post-Diana group the proper support - as this song (and numerous other releases) show, THESE GIRLS HAD IT!
@njplr that is an insult to the production team that came up with this song. the supremes had the great frank wilson on board. he was talented and continued the motown sound. the early 70's supremes were still in the studios a lot. they released three albums in a short period of time. this lack of interest story is just a convenience to lay hate on diana.
@wonderboyjoy Hmmm, i can only assume perhaps you are a foreigner who's English skills have led to a muddled comprehension of my previous post. (other assumptions would be far less charitable). NOWHERE did I even INTIMATE that any blame for the post-Diana Supremes had ANYTHING to do with Miss Ross herself. Nor do I even SUGGEST the slightest criticism of "the wonderful production team that came up w/this song". On the contrary, I applaud those talented people, and give them props.
@njplr you say "it is a crime of the first degree that Motown (BG) did not give post-Diana group the proper support". well I believe he did. I believe the producers of the early 70's supremes were fantastic, supported the supremes very well. they were a part of the Motown family of which Berry was head. I think the whole BG thing is a bit mythical to favour Mary and her bitchy bitterness at the time. i believe Mary had a lot to do with BG having less and less to do with them.
@wonderboyjoy I agree there was a vein of bitchy bitterness in Mary, evinced most clearly in her autobiographies. But I also believe, it was somewhat justified. BG'
s focus on Diana was undoubtedly a difficult pill to swallow; SOME jealousy there is most understandable. But the NON-promoting of gems like this, that was inexcusable. Don't be naive wonderboy; hits don't just "happen". "The Happening"," Love is Here and Now You're Gone" - nice enough songs, but #! hits? Motown machinery MADE them
@wonderboyjoy #1 hits. Diana did what she felt she had to do, moved on, ok. Mary stays with the group, they work HARD, and produce some WONDERFUL songs - yet suddenly, they are NOT charting like they used to. It was a combination of two things that prevented big hits - the absence of Diana, and Motown's indifference. And I believe it was MOSTLY Motown's indifference. OK, I've said my peace, you're entitled to your opinion. But you're wrong. :-)
@njplr working hard is not enough if you aint got it and as muchas mary and her fans think she has 'got it' she aint. if she had 'it' she would have disbanded the supremes much earlier and moved on. yes they had SOME wonderful songs and they were mediocre hits. they lived on the fresh memories of the 60's supremes and then time killed them. you'r entitled to your opinion but you are wrong :-) enjoy the music.
@wonderboyjoy I just saw Mary Wilson in concert here in New York a few nights ago and brought the house down and received two standing ovations. She was spectacular! Is Diana still drinking? What is she doing?
@DetroitLives313 Ross just renewed her contract w/EMI. A 3 album deal I just read. She's been dealing w/that label for quite some time. I look forward to hearing what she has in store for us. I had the opportunity to see Mary Wilson in Charlotte, NC last year. SHE WAS SPECTACULAR!!! I just wished Wilson would've established herself more as an A list artist. Poor management, material, stage shows. After Ross left it was a downward spiral for Wilson's music career. I hate that.
@sickvokals That is strange because Diane says that she doesn't have a recording contract. I just saw Mary Wilson at the end of July in New York City and the show was fantastic. Excellent stage show, singers and musicians and of course the Mary herself the consumate professional. I loved it!!!! Check out her new record, "Life's Been Good to Me".
@DetroitLives313 Yea, I mentioned I just read where she renewed. She must've been a free agent when u heard that. I bout "LBGTM" on iTunes. DEFINITELY no "Walk the Line" but I'll always show my support
@sickvokals Then that is good news. Now we have two of the Original Supremes recording again. Life's Been Good to Me and "Walk the Line" are two very different songs, different styles. "Walk the Line" is more of an anthem type, more hip hop like. "Life's Been Good to Me" is Urban Adult Contemporary all the way!
Thank you for posting "Nathan Jones." no doubt still one of my favorites but the info of the song claims it was the highest post Diana Ross Supremes posting at #16 in the Billboard Pop 100 & #8 in the R&B and both "Stoned Love" & "Up The Ladder To The Roof" charted higher, both in the Pop and R&B, a correction should be in order!
@TWTR4EVER Correction, TheBacmaster does specified that Nathan Jones was the highest charting single from that particular album ( Touch) but the second single also titled "Touch" is one of the most beautiful ballads from its time, worth checking out!
@TheBacmaster You're very welcome and congratulations one more time for such great work!
Regarding The Supremes, 1970's post Diana Ross, in my opinion the most diversified versatile incarnation of the trailblazing female trio. (MARY, CINDY, JEAN)
Their album titled "New Ways But Love Stays" has their versions of Paul Simon "Bridge Over Trouble Waters" and John Lennon & Paul McCartney's "Come Together" both produced By Frank Wilson, also producer of "Nathan Jones."

Also worth looking at from the album "New Ways But Love Stays" their version of Paul Simon "Bridge Over Trouble Waters" and John Lennon & Paul McCartney "Come Together" this album was also produced by master Frank Wilson who also cowrote and produced that album top ten hit "Stoned Love"
Frank Wilson is also credited for the album "Touch" & "Nathan Jones."
