This seems to have happened in the past--a great military with poor political direction was a great superpower for a while but then crumbled in the midst of internal breakdown. I have no doubt Russia has or will have a powerful military--what I do doubt is how far it will be able to develop in terms of strategic/tactical fluidity or how long it will even be sustainable.

Yes, what is needed is international good standing. The US's standing is really crap right now - especially when they will pull out of Iraq and the world witnesses the atrocities that will follow.

People will naturally look for someone else to turn to, while this will help the US's old cold-war rival, with all the neo-nazism and racism there - which is gaining shocking popular support in Russia, people will look elsewhere.

Despite the fact that Saddam was a terrible leader, he did manage to keep the country in some form of order (albeit, it was through blood). Whenever the US took him out of power, chaos insued because that order was gone, and centuries-old rivalries between the three major cultural sects in Iraq reappeared in spades. It is a very challenging question to answer--is Iraq better off now than they were before? And where do we go now?

I think Iran is out of the west's reach, now. This is partially due to American caused genocide and destruction in Iraq, and their miserable military failures from Vietnam to Afghanistan. Then, China and Russia know well about global domination and simply protect Iran, and keep the global power balanced. The welfare of an average Amer is not helping the US diplomacy, especially as US spends more money to cause death then to help people. It is hard to sell "love and peace" when kill everyone.
