Air Bags in Vehicles kill and so do Tasers. There is a falling danger with Tasers that should not be discounted either. I believe these two different technologies are fundamentally flawed and should be discontinued.
There has never been a single death directly caused by a taser. Not a single one. The deaths following the use of taser have been contributing factors to existing conditions, for which the police cannot be held accountable. Banning tasers is not the answer, they are a vital piece of equipment, police just need to start using them only in more serious circumstances.
@007RoyalFlush So, by your logic, should people with a preexisting condition hang a sign around their necks, in order to avoid being zapped? Furthermore, how do you suggest that a resistant suspect be stopped, short of lethal force, in instances where law enforcement is aware that the taser could render fatal results?
@ltcgfan No I'm not suggesting that at all, I'm just saying that police can't be expected to take into account information they don't have when using appropriate force. Your second point will depend on the individual circumstance, a lot of the time I would suggest that the taser will still be used regardless, however if there is a situation where police know that a taser would cause substantially more harm than normal, then they will look into alternative, such as a baton round.
@007RoyalFlush You have perfectly outlined my reasoning to forgo the use of tasers; there is no possible way for law enforcement to know who can be safely 'zapped'.
This debate is eerily similar to the tired old arguments that we hear from Big Pharma when a new drug is developed... it usually sickens or kills a few people, but since most folks see noticeable improvements, the end results warrant the losses.
@ltcgfan Yes the end result does warrant the loss. Let's not forget that the people getting tasered are violent offenders. Police should not be expected to take into account their medical history when using a taser. Tasers are excellent pieces of equipment that are vital to everyday policing. Your argument is a completely ridiculous one, since without tasers, these people would be getting baton rounds or being shot.
@007RoyalFlush No, let's not forget that far too many of the people getting tasered are victims of mistaken identity, and you cannot justify the loss of human life in such instances.
Besides, isn't it a bit extreme and unfair to label a man as a 'violent offender', due to disorientation or inability to understand what those around him are saying?
The taser, being a potentially lethal weapon, I personally would prefer to be shot in the leg as opposed to being zapped. Make sense?
@ltcgfan Not in the slightest. Who mentioned anything about someone disorientated and unable to understand? Tasers are perfect weapons, and to even suggest they be banned is nothing short of complete madness. The only thing that needs to change are the conditions in which AMERICAN police use them. In the UK, police only use them when they are faced with violent offenders, whether or not they know what's going on around them is irrelevent.
@007RoyalFlush I actually agree with your suggestion for changes in US policy regarding the use of tasers.
To refer to the taser as a 'perfect weapon', I would have to disagree, as by its very nature, the risk of permanent damage or fatality is too great to affix such a label. (back to the old bullet in the shin option)
However, I am thankful to know that UK police only use it in emergency situations. Thank you for commenting, I learned something new today.
@ltcgfan The risk of permanent damage is non-existant and the risk of death is incredibly tiny. This is because UK taser officers are highly trained and they are used only when necessary. There has been one death following the use of a taser in the UK since their introduction, and that's because the guy was on steroids and had a weakened heart. In the UK, there have been more deaths associated with the use of batons, firearms, CS spray and unarmed defensive techniques. They are absolutely vital
If someone kills someone where I am at - we electrocute them in the electric chair... how is tazering someone to death any different? Even if its involuntary manslaughter on behalf of the officer for overtazing an unconvicted person isn't that still a crime?
They need banned, period. Police use tasers to make their jobs easier, they were intended to be used where a billy club may be used, but they are blatently being abused time and time again.
This video didn't show the repeated tasering that happened to that poor man in Vancouver. He didn't speak English and he was confused, looking for his mother. It was a very sad situation and I personally feel, after watching the entire video many times that the RCMP should be charged with manslaughter, at the very least. Tasers are very dangerous ! Thank you for posting.

Thanks for your comments, I agree that the RCMP officers should face prosecution for their actions.
