It was about 4000 gallons I suppose, it wasnt a perfect rectangle or oval for measuring. Your pond should be (in my opinion) at least 3 1/2 to 4 feet deep for overwintering. The koi depending on their size need that depth . should turn off the pump equipment and bring in for the winter (once it is about 40 degrees consistently) have a heat ring for the pond so that air and gases can escape If there is no where for the gases to escape the fish will die if the pond freezes
Whats the size of your pond? I am trying to make a 1000 litre pond! My soil has stones and roots in it which makes it reallyyyy hard to dig :@ How deep should i keep it so that they can survie in winter when there is a layer of ice on top of the pond? I will probably be keeping koi carps.
Thanks. After starting with a small pond in the ground we really hated walking up to it and having to squat to see the fish etc. So my husband built a wooden frame shaped like a bowl and then put rocks around the sides. The only thing we want to change is that cement board on the top we want to change to stone. We thought stone would be too hot to sit on when in fact the cement board gets hot. So other than that we are happy with its location and the fish seem to love it.
for some reason those koi that year didnt eat the plants (water hyacith) but they DO eat hyacinth. I made my own plant protector using pipe insulation or kid noodles for the pool. Attach it together with zip ties and then I put deer or bird netting (make sure its small so your koi cant get stuck in it) around the edge and then zip tied that. I put the water hyacinth inside and they cant get to the roots, yet the roots do their job of keeping the pond clear!

Cool video! (5 - STARS!)
Thanks for posting it!
I help run a free Pond share website.
It would be great to have some more pond people join in and share their pictures, videos, and stories.

Very nice! My pond has lots of plants and shade too! I only have goldfish and they pretty much leave the plants alone.
