I think I am going to try this but without the clicker as I do not have one. My 3 already know a good few tricks and seem to enjoy the work I may be able to do it with toys for some reasons with treats one of the dog gets too excited to do anything other then sit stay and lay down shes still knew to the pack.
i love how holly is in the background just watching for part of this video. if i tried to train one of my dogs with my other dog in the room they would both try to do the same thing lol!
@Hmenzi222 I have a video "how to train a dog while another dog stays back" you might find it helpful :) it takes a bit of time but it's worth it in the end as it can be very difficult when they all want to join in! hehe!
and....I have a really big german shepherd..and when he is placing his front paw on my knww he is putting so much wieght in it..we are stuck..if i dont support his weight si is not doing it anymore....:(
do...you have any tips that may help? pleasee? xoxo
@thewhitewingedwolf you could try asking your dog to target a wall rather than your leg? first place the books by a wall and then you can put something narrower by the wall and finally just the wall, you could look at my handstand video and apply the same tips but for the side legs rather than the back ones. let me know how you get on. give your dog a hug from me :)
What is your verbal cue for this trick? I am running out of ideas with all of our tricks!!! Sometimes I will forget, but fortunately I remember the body signals! haha
I think this is such a neat trick I plan on teaching my pup this but can I ask you what you say to cue your dog to do it. I'm not good at naming tricks. :)
i taught taz this today! the problem is that i have to hold up his hindquarters so he will lift his leg. otherwize, he will just back up. plz help me :-)
I like to use a clicker as it is easier to get the exact same sound each time and makes timing easier too (you must click at the moment the desired behaviour happens) you can pick one up for a small amount of money at most pet stores or online, if you don't want to do that you can use a marker word in place of the click such as "yes!" say it short and clear and say it EXACTLY the same way each time.
i am hoping to make a video on taz's tricks. Yeah he knows quite a few.(sit, stay, down, roll over, shake paw, speak, spin, hold a cane, stand on two legs, jump, sit pretty, back into my legs) while moving and standing still
you have choices, you can either use the method described in my 'cane trick' video for foot targeting using the book as the object or you can click and reward your dog for any movement towards the book and then reward your dog for putting a foot on the book (this takes lots of time but some people like this way of training) or you can lure your dog over the book with a treat and then quickly click and reward if your dog puts a foot on it, it doesn't matter if it's by accident at first :-)
I'm so sorry for not commenting on this sooner, I haven't had time for watching videos in ages! This was amazing! Mabel is catching on so fast! And Holly has got this trick hands down! (or I suppose I should say paws up!) I actually just started teaching Sparky this the other day, so thank you for your video, this will help a lot!
I'm still amazed that Mabel is all grown up, she's a GORGEOUS young woman now. :)
Oh my goodness Sian! I never even thought about this trick before! Thank you so much for making this! I will have to try this with Samson, ha ha it may take a while for him to do it as it took him forever to learn how to lift his back leg up on command :) Thanks so much again! 5***** and favs
Aww its no problem Sian, I promised I would be on Youtube now :) I'm so sorry I have not seen your video's sooner. You have the most amazing talent my wonderful friend, I have missed you so much. You really are one of my bestest friends in the whole wide world and I'm so lucky to have met you :)
you are one of my best friends too :-) it's so great to have you back :-) I hope that you will post some more of your wonderful videos soon! xxxxxxxxxx
Aww Thank you :D I do have a video planned, I'm going to post it up very soon :) Youtube has muted my latest video which is very annoying so I'll have to sort that out, hopefully Youtube wont mute the new video I put up ha ha :D anyways I hope you've had a great day and give Holly and Mabel a big hug from me :)
Hi Sian that is one cool vid and i can't wait to get my baby Quinn started on these tricks of yours, my red/white collie can do quite alot already, but she's very keen to learn, thanx for the sweet comment on my Quinn vid
Must give this a go. Thanks for another fantastic training video Sian. It's been great seeing Mabel growing up. Holly and Mabel are two very special dogs. 5 Stars
Sian, awesome as always! I will definitely have to try this with Zander!! Thanks for uploading another GREAT tutorial! Holly and Mabel are such good pupils(So smart and willing to learn!! Look at the tails go!). 5*'s!!
Oh my gosh! I didn't even THINK to train it that way! Wow! I am so going to try this. Abbey already knows how to lift up her back leg because of the "boy dog" trick. I am going to try side legs now...COOL! Do you have a tutorial on how to teach shame...I'm having trouble with that one.
This is great, Sian! I have been wondering how to teach side legs up to Ricky - this will definitely give me some help. We are still working on handstand and are not able to progress past a certain height with the books. Not sure how this new trick will go. Thanks for posting another excellent trick tutorial! I always look forward to seeing your training and your dogs!
thank you, you are always so lovely. I think this is easier than handstand but the dog still needs to find its balance so obviously you need to stick with it but I'm sure Ricky will do fine. let me know if you get stuck or if you want any pointers with the handstand :-)
ooo, that's an idea. I'll give it some thought but it sounds like a winner to me. I might not get it up for a while but I'll add that to my 'to do' list for sure. thanks for the idea, very cool :-)
I'm always open to suggestions! I can't promise which ones I'll do because I have a few ideas for videos that I need to get round to making (and in some cases training!) but I love getting feedback and suggestions as to what to do next so bring on any ideas of stuff you want to see :-)
Jamie, I love your comments, you are always so lovely to me :-) I use the cue 'both' and no hand signal as yet. you run out of ideas for cues in the end! love you and I'll write very soon, your last email had me in stitches :-) xxxxxxxx
Those are great things to call it, I wish I'd thought of that when I made the title for the video :-) thanks so much for always being so supportive :-)
AWESOME Sian! I just love your videos! 5*s from us and I had to favorite it! I am also curious as to what your verbal/visual cue is. Holly and Mabel are so adorable and smart! Very COOL video tutorial!
you are so sweet, thank you for all your support Pam, it means so much to me, you're one of my best friends on here :-) I use the cue 'both' which is rubbish I know but you just do start to run out of ideas!! hehe! no visual cue at the moment.
great training tutorial 5* Now does this work with Blondes? I try this but I cant walk & chew gum at the same time? Either I trip over, or choke??? :S lol
Thank you so much! I see you have a new video up that I must watch soon, I'm falling behind with all my youtube stuff at the moment so stick with me! hehe! I use the cue 'both' which isn't very good but you run out of ideas in the end!!
woah sian!!! :D This was awesome!! Holly and Mabel doing an amazing job!! Including you!! You really know how to train your dogs!! :D Could every dog do this? If yes, I will try to train that Foxi!! It looks cute and a bit funny! :D 5 stars and faving! ♥
I think I am going to try this but without the clicker as I do not have one.
