Yeah, Its neccesary Just like a regular computer u need software to run a PC, The PS3 needs Firmware for it to run correctly. Its like having a car without a engine. How's it going to Work? But, the software installation is straight forward~

Is this necessary? Or can I just put it into the PS3 and it will work the same way it does when a regular hard drive is installed?

The PS3 software installs on the flash0 drive inside the console, your just formatting the drive.
