i don't think this is about abortion though it has something to do with it. i think the song is more on describing the emotion of the writer during the time when his girlfriend had to commit that thing...
but good song though. first heard it only on 2007 and it's really, really lovely. one of the best timeless songs ever...
deep song. At first you would think that it would be just about someone that brings you down because of the chorus. But the bridge before the last chorus left some things to ponder on.
First off I find abortion terrible as well. Its obviously a horrifying experience for anyone involved. although i don't like how some people can bash people for having an abortion sometimes if they really cannot support it. SOME religious groups care a lot about the unborn fetus then as soon as it's born they don`t give a shit about how awful its life could be. No one has the right to make a decision to take a life whoever you are. There are just shitty situations sometimes and hard decisions
all seriousness aside...I saw ben folds last night in concert and it was amazing...this is song is moving...but I def made out with my boyfriend to this song...and it was amazing
This song is very moving to me and I've never even been in that situation... thankfully. I would have a horrible time with having made that choice. I am not a religious person and don't tell people how to conduct their lives I just find abortion a heartbreaking thing.
I never saw anything about abortion in this song. And as for the issue, early stage is just a lump of cells. No different then a clot of cyno bacteara. You kill that from your pool with chlorine every day. So get over it.
Wow, man...in many interviews he says this is about a personal experience he had when his high school girlfriend got pregnant and had an abortion. Listen to the words...how could you NOT get abortion out of that song? Why do you think he had to sell his Christmas presents? What do you think it meant when he said he found someone? Why do you suppose she wasn't fine afterward? How completely obtuse you must be to not get this song. How sad.
I just got the fact that "alone" has a double meaning. Think about it.(and check out my original music if you like Ben folds style).

@Mello92 He says so himself on Ben Folds Live that it is about abortion. So yeah, pretty confirmed... :P

Not surprised at this all. Used to watch this video on VH1 and MTV all the time when I was little. It was a rather popular song in the 90s.
P.S. Ben Folds isn't underground at all.

it was the day after christmas he and his girlfriend had the schedule for abortion. he wasnt able to sleep all night
he went to pick her up from her house to go to the abortionist
shes a brick and im drowning slowly
- he feels that all his plans/dreams are crumbling because she got pregnant.he feels lost due to their decision
at 7:30 the nurses paged her name to proceed to the operating room and have the procedure while he walked to the parking lot

he bought her flowers and he sold the gifts that he had because he doesn't have enough money for the medical bills
cant you see, its not me you're dying for - he was talking to their aborted baby.
they eventually ended breaking up and they both felt very lonely

youre all wrong, its just a song. songs are meant to be poetic and be intperpreted, but the brick is metaphorical for someone that brings you down.

It's not a political statement, it's an emotional statement, if you don't know that, don't comment.
