its not johnny cash being disrespectful, and in fact i think the opposite. It shows heroes come from all areas and the things soldiers must overcome. ira hayes probably suffered from survivors guilt among other things but its pretty obvious to us he was a hero to him he was just another soldier fighting for the country he believed in next to men he believed were his brothers
ira seen all his friends killed then they took him off the front lines to sell war bonds instead of staying with his brothers in battle. that caused him to feel nothing but guilt. that caused him to drink so much.
This song is about the terrible travesties Hayes was put through. His bravery & courage are told many places, but this song is the only place I know of that tells of how it was rewarded. I can hear the anger in Cash's voice when he sings, "Drunken Ira Hayes". He was made a drunk by having it shoved down his throat. Ask someone in medicine about The People & alcohol, they don't mix well. Cash was a song writer & he wrote the untold tale in this song, if you listen he supports The People.
My stepfather is a Marine who served in WWII. He was on Iwo for two days before he was wounded by morters. He survived, minus a leg and many other physical wounds but the the mental anguish has never left him. It's not just Iwo but all the other battles he faught in the Pacific before that. When I here this song it breaks my heart for all the boys that are at war. It's a horrible thing for a person to endure. My stepfather turned to drink just like Ira and I remember growing up with his pain.
@BonnieStoner yes every person that serves in the militariy and is sent overseas to take care of america comes home with something that bothers their minds forever.

this is a song about a man that went to war for his country, and then when he came home he had problems with his thoughts about the war. a lot of men have had trouble to come to terms with the war. the only problem that Ira had was nobody say his problem or tried to help, now we have a special service in the VA that tries to help people llike him, but they don't always make it
@orchdorkhero Well your teacher is probably some stupid liberal who hates whites. And if he/she is white, they're probably one of those idiots who just assumes all us white people are so evil and racist.
I think this is a beautiful and sad song, but my Native American Studies teacher spent almost an hour telling us how Johnny Cash was a horrible, racist asshole for writing this.
@orchdorkhero well i hope that you know better than what you teacher was telling you. Johnny Cash was never a horrible racist, he just told it like it was. but today the indian has a chance to get a good job and the casinos are helping us out a lot. now i don't know if you teacher was a indian or not, but she is wrong and should be fired for being a bigot.
@orchdorkhero Johnny Cash didn't write this. Peter la Farge did, who claimed to be distantly descendent from the Narragansett Tribe. So it seems like your teacher should do some research before he lies for you. :)

Every marine both past and present that walk across the parade deck on either coast whether it be Paris Island SC or San Diego Cal is a hero Semper Fi Marines
The only thing I dislike about this is it seems like it denotes Iras legacy, and the legacy of native americans. Is Ira really being remembered as a courageous individual or a drunk? This song makes me cry becuase of the outcome. What made him forgive the thieves who defiled his ancestors land, but walk among them, protecting them against their "invaders". I fear It's too late to ask him that question. I believe he was not only a fighter but a savior and protector blessing the battle grounds.
@rosemarie443 nooo, by my eduaction, johnny is singing about a boy that had a good life, and war fucked him up, while also being called a hero, he was depressed, and drank till he died, thus the song stating how much war fucks people up, watch the interview on this song if your so smart

@RiflemanExpert Big John in his way protested the MIAs that is why he always wore black, he said he would wear black until every person was brought home. like i said some men can not handle war, and now the have special help for those people, but at the time of Ira there was no help. but this is just a song, so get over it
@Barilazar1eo I think that's why this song was made.. Call him drunken Ira Hayes.. but don't forget that he put his life on the line for this great country, a country that spit on him and his people. Ira is a hero, and any person with a brain in their head can see that.
@Barilazar1eo I don't think the song in any way disrepects Ira.. it tells us ot th battle, all the soldiers battled.
After the war they never recieved the help they needed. All race of man that struggled for freedom in wars past have had issues. Ira is just one brave man they imortilzed via the song. God Bless Freedom

The text at the beginning is incorrect; Three of the six men who raised the flag were not killed during the raising, but in the days after the raising.
Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima WW2- Ira is at the left in the picture after they raised the famous flag in the pic and all the marines were waving etc ira is sitting quietly to the left hand corner.Typical of a native american to be in the center of things risking his life but then sit in the side lines quietly & humbly when the honour and photo call is arranged.

an hero well danish as i am ill never been marine but transported plenty of weapons for them well am i proud NO i wish i could have done more has it been helthy NO drunk half the time ill guess i live better doing what i did than ill do at home im to agresive and violent after what ill seen and done to be among people to bad denmark isent big enugh to hide in SEMPER FI to the folks who fight for us now hope you all get rememberd just as well wish i was there and not here with an broken life
@shroomsfolife - Johnny Cash transcends country....he's so much more. A rocker, a folkie, a gospel singer, a balladeer, he could do it all. He loomed VERY large on stage, always had that PRESENCE, spirit, heart.
A proud man Ira Hayes, only to be broken by the country he bravely fought to save. I was about 7 or 8 years in the Navy and came home on leave. My Dad played this song which I liked, but my Dad said it was true. I was not convinced until I went back to DOD. I wish I could have helped him at Iwo Jima. Proud Kabi-Kabi ,Australia

WTF is your problem? This is not about white or "non-white." Ira Hayes is an American hero who volunteered to fight for the US in WW2, regardless of his "non-white" status, and served with bravery and honor. That is how he needs to be remembered, not whether he was "non-white."
@gemcutter187 Throw away your crack pipe, sober up, learn how to put words together into coherent and logical sentences; and then the few adults around here might start to take you seriously. Until you can do that, go away and stop bothering the grownups, little fool.
i started drinkin' hard but somehow was able to quit that shit... miracle
this song brings memories of hose that lost that battle. many friends and relatives. sad and sometimes violent. drugs, alcohol, drownings, fires, fights, murder and suicide, car accidents. i don't know what the life expectancy of the north american aboriginal male is these days, but i've lasted past many over the years. a freaky thing to think about
I used to listen to this song very often when I was a child. When I think of how Ira Hayes was treated after WW II, I think of my childhood. I never had a good social life in my childhood. That is why I sympathize with Ira Hayes.
This is a great song by a great singer about an heroic and proud American. Anyone who thinks any different is an ignorant idiot. Listen to the words and you'll see what the story is all about. Don't try to read anything into it that isn't there.
@mekomanaz Although Johnny Cash is probably the most well known person to sing this song it was actually was written by Peter La Farge. In any case it is one of the most patriotic songs about a man who should have been revered not left in the dust.
@mekomanaz I sir am not a Pima but I am a retired service member who was also born in Arizona. I would like to take this time to salute all service members past and present and future. you and your sacrifices are what made this country free. I know about the history of the Pima's and I hold them in high reguard. But my native american heritage comes from mexico Tarajumara. May the sprit of Ira Hays live on forever.
The irony is the only man who got to tell the full story is James Bradley, who avoided the press his whole life. The man who did his best to avoid combat, and tried to leave a quiet life. His son told the full story. God bless all of them.
A wonderful tribute to a man who fought for something he believed in, only for his bravery and honour to be a cause for Jewish profit and to be left to die in a ditch like so many others. May every man who dies for the love of God's earth rest in peace and may every Jew who causes this wrong rot in Hell.
I usually never comment on posts, but in this case I want to say to the poster, excellent work. This is a great song that I was already familiar with, as a Johnny Cash fan, and the video accompaniment is well done. Thanks to songbirdlaw4 for a superb video post.

Proud Kabi-Kabi ,Australia

we could use more non-whites in America like this
gemcutter187 10 months ago
@gemcutter187
WTF is your problem? This is not about white or "non-white." Ira Hayes is an American hero who volunteered to fight for the US in WW2, regardless of his "non-white" status, and served with bravery and honor. That is how he needs to be remembered, not whether he was "non-white."
8710cugel 10 months ago
@8710cugel Master Status 1 = American Hero.... Master Status 2 = Indian. stfu you jerkoff
gemcutter187 10 months ago
@gemcutter187 Throw away your crack pipe, sober up, learn how to put words together into coherent and logical sentences; and then the few adults around here might start to take you seriously. Until you can do that, go away and stop bothering the grownups, little fool.

i started drinkin' hard but somehow was able to quit that shit... miracle
this song brings memories of hose that lost that battle. many friends and relatives. sad and sometimes violent. drugs, alcohol, drownings, fires, fights, murder and suicide, car accidents. i don't know what the life expectancy of the north american aboriginal male is these days, but i've lasted past many over the years. a freaky thing to think about
i may still end up layin' in a ditch

I used to listen to this song very often when I was a child. When I think of how Ira Hayes was treated after WW II, I think of my childhood. I never had a good social life in my childhood. That is why I sympathize with Ira Hayes.
sheltv100 11 months ago
This is a great song by a great singer about an heroic and proud American. Anyone who thinks any different is an ignorant idiot. Listen to the words and you'll see what the story is all about. Don't try to read anything into it that isn't there.

mekomanaz 11 months ago 26

Hister333 11 months ago
A wonderful tribute to a man who fought for something he believed in, only for his bravery and honour to be a cause for Jewish profit and to be left to die in a ditch like so many others. May every man who dies for the love of God's earth rest in peace and may every Jew who causes this wrong rot in Hell.

I usually never comment on posts, but in this case I want to say to the poster, excellent work. This is a great song that I was already familiar with, as a Johnny Cash fan, and the video accompaniment is well done. Thanks to songbirdlaw4 for a superb video post.
