  • Semper Fi Devil Dogs

    USMC '82-'86

  • @bofts rest in peace. Semper Fi

  • Many thanks to Ira & all native men & women that fought for our freedom. Also to those that lost their lives, fighting to our people safe.

  • nice tribute to Ira,,shame is a lot of Vets that get little recognition or respect they deserve

God Bless all our troops present and Past

    thanks fro the post

  • THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO.

PEOPLE DON'T GIVE ENOUGHT CREDIT TO THE NATIVE

AMERICANS OR THE AFRICAN AMERICANS FOR WHAT THEY IN THE WAR.

  • Pikiwiki... God Bless your Dad and Ira.

  • my dad was with hayes on the bond tour. he didn't have good memories about it.

  • its not johnny cash being disrespectful, and in fact i think the opposite. It shows heroes come from all areas and the things soldiers must overcome. ira hayes probably suffered from survivors guilt among other things but its pretty obvious to us he was a hero to him he was just another soldier fighting for the country he believed in next to men he believed were his brothers

  • thats amazing for him if you know the story behind it if you dont i suggest watching flags of our fathers

  • Ira Hayes is one of the few people who inspire me, He makes me proud to be Native American.

  • That picture is like "wow"

  • Enjoyed the first half then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • what happen to the other half of the visuals ?

  • ira seen all his friends killed then they took him off the front lines to sell war bonds instead of staying with his brothers in battle. that caused him to feel nothing but guilt. that caused him to drink so much.

  • im native and i can tell mr cash has nothing but respect for ira hayes

  • here first treated like last

    the creator sees this indeed

    time has a pocket

were like the wounded black bear

    he forgets them not

    the wheel comes round again

    he forgets not the ones

  • this is how canada and the usa treat our heroes. used and abused

  • Johnny,you were and still are"The Man!!".

  • @ 4:07 there is a pac man clowd its itke numm numm numm

  • This song is about the terrible travesties Hayes was put through. His bravery & courage are told many places, but this song is the only place I know of that tells of how it was rewarded. I can hear the anger in Cash's voice when he sings, "Drunken Ira Hayes". He was made a drunk by having it shoved down his throat. Ask someone in medicine about The People & alcohol, they don't mix well. Cash was a song writer & he wrote the untold tale in this song, if you listen he supports The People.

  • My stepfather is a Marine who served in WWII. He was on Iwo for two days before he was wounded by morters. He survived, minus a leg and many other physical wounds but the the mental anguish has never left him. It's not just Iwo but all the other battles he faught in the Pacific before that. When I here this song it breaks my heart for all the boys that are at war. It's a horrible thing for a person to endure. My stepfather turned to drink just like Ira and I remember growing up with his pain.

  • @BonnieStoner yes every person that serves in the militariy and is sent overseas to take care of america comes home with something that bothers their minds forever.

  • @jgpullensr he's a real hero, not these clowns today

  • The book flags of our fathers talks all about the flag raising and what happened to the six after it a great book

  • One of the men who raised the flag with ira (mike strank) lived like 10 minutes from my home town

  • paramarine get it right rpm12091

  • He was "AIRBORNE" and a hero. I would have been proud to have served with him. Thanks for doing this video and keeping his memory alive.

  • brilliant song and singer, sad soldier dies ingloriously after serving with distinction. immortalised now though and very deserving of it as are all wwII vets whatever their race or nationality

  • Great spirit will be allways with people whos dance with great spirit. Be proud, because you are finest people what i have known. ( wrong language) HOOKA HEY

  • @tuomaankuoma1 but remember this porr Ira was rejected by his own people, they let him die

  • i wonder if they know it was Mount Suribachi, not Auribachi

  • Comment removed

  • semper fi Ira your a "True American" hero

  • It was written by Peter La Farge who was a song written who worked with Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. He also served in the Navy in Korea.

  • @jgpullensr I want to say thank you for your service and what you did to save so many. You bear the burden like millions of men and women that have made some of the same sacrifices that you did. Too many times they come back to mistreatment and a lack of compassion and understanding. We must never forget the price of freedom.

From a grateful American I would also like to tell you something you may not have heard when you came back from the fields of Vietnam......WELCOME HOME

  • only those who have served can understand.

  • @Howardraz That's it in a nutshell. Vietnam -- 67--69

  • The illusion of war heroes lives on

  • Historic inquiry into past murders during the war in northern Ireland must be terminated immediately. Historic inquiry is helping to destroy peace in Ireland. There is amnesty for terrorists who committed act of violence before Good Friday Agreement. This mean Good Friday 1998.

  • @justicepartyuk who is inquiring about Ireland????? as far as i can see we are talking abuot Ira Hayes.

  • Ira, as a brother Marine Is a hero of mine. .

  • met with some lawyers who are pima indians, they had no idea who he was, ran them the hell off

  • A great man , great singer and even more importantly a a great tribute to a man who is more than great

  • this is a song about a man that went to war for his country, and then when he came home he had problems with his thoughts about the war. a lot of men have had trouble to come to terms with the war. the only problem that Ira had was nobody say his problem or tried to help, now we have a special service in the VA that tries to help people llike him, but they don't always make it

  • @orchdorkhero Well your teacher is probably some stupid liberal who hates whites. And if he/she is white, they're probably one of those idiots who just assumes all us white people are so evil and racist.

  • I think this is a beautiful and sad song, but my Native American Studies teacher spent almost an hour telling us how Johnny Cash was a horrible, racist asshole for writing this.

  • @orchdorkhero well i hope that you know better than what you teacher was telling you. Johnny Cash was never a horrible racist, he just told it like it was. but today the indian has a chance to get a good job and the casinos are helping us out a lot. now i don't know if you teacher was a indian or not, but she is wrong and should be fired for being a bigot.

  • @orchdorkhero Johnny Cash didn't write this. Peter la Farge did, who claimed to be distantly descendent from the Narragansett Tribe. So it seems like your teacher should do some research before he lies for you. :)

  • @sanyora NO big john did not write this song, it came from the song pool and he liked it so he sang it that is the way it works, thousand of people write songs and only a few get sung.

  • I learned about Ira Hayes from the song when I was a little girl in the sixties. It always made me sad because he was a hero and he died the way he did. I learned a lot from this video, too. You did an excellent job on this. Thank you for posting it.

  • I learned about Ira Hayes from the song when I was a little girl in the sixties. It always made me sad because he was a hero and he died the way he did. I learned a lot from this video, too. You did an excellent job on this. Thank you for posting it.

  • hokahey red bro! Hokahey!

  • Beautiful work, thanks for posting it.

  • Every marine both past and present that walk across the parade deck on either coast whether it be Paris Island SC or San Diego Cal is a hero Semper Fi Marines

  • every marine that set foot on that island is a hero!

  • Thanks you for this. I took care of my friend for 10 years until she passed away. She had this record and I dropped it and broke it.

  • this is a hero, not some clow name dakota

  • how could anybody dislike this vid I am irish but at heart am Ira Hayes god look after Ira , johnny ,and all our other legends R.I.P

  • Another great Johnny Cash song with a message!

  • In my opinion, this is the most important song Johnny Cash ever performed.

  • The only thing I dislike about this is it seems like it denotes Iras legacy, and the legacy of native americans. Is Ira really being remembered as a courageous individual or a drunk? This song makes me cry becuase of the outcome. What made him forgive the thieves who defiled his ancestors land, but walk among them, protecting them against their "invaders". I fear It's too late to ask him that question. I believe he was not only a fighter but a savior and protector blessing the battle grounds.

  • @Barilazar1eo This is true imo

This song is passively suggesting not only stereotypes, but the legitimacy of manifest destiny in a way almost feeling patriotic

It's interesting how for some folks, racial groups are only assimilated through debasement and a somehow nostalgic gleeful servitude

  • @Barilazar1eo I am pro-military and a marine, but you do know this is an anti war song right

  • @RiflemanExpert War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

  • @RiflemanExpert this is a song about a man that served his country and then died, nothing more or less

  • @rosemarie443 nooo, by my eduaction, johnny is singing about a boy that had a good life, and war fucked him up, while also being called a hero, he was depressed, and drank till he died, thus the song stating how much war fucks people up, watch the interview on this song if your so smart

  • @RiflemanExpert I never said that going and fighting in a war did not change a persons mind. but the song is about a young man that went to war for his country and that is all

  • @rosemarie443 no it isnt, johnny is protesting war because of what it did to this perfectly good kid before he went to war and came back all fucked up and drunken because he was depressed

  • @RiflemanExpert Big John in his way protested the MIAs that is why he always wore black, he said he would wear black until every person was brought home. like i said some men can not handle war, and now the have special help for those people, but at the time of Ira there was no help. but this is just a song, so get over it

  • @Barilazar1eo I think that's why this song was made.. Call him drunken Ira Hayes.. but don't forget that he put his life on the line for this great country, a country that spit on him and his people. Ira is a hero, and any person with a brain in their head can see that.

  • @Barilazar1eo I don't think the song in any way disrepects Ira.. it tells us ot th battle, all the soldiers battled.

After the war they never recieved the help they needed. All race of man that struggled for freedom in wars past have had issues. Ira is just one brave man they imortilzed via the song. God Bless Freedom

  • @Barilazar1eo the vibe i get from it is that cash is saying he was the defnition of an american patriot. he had seen his share, hated the fame and for that he enjoyed his whiskey.

  • @Barilazar1eo He was both. He suffered from sever PTSD, but it just wasn't something talked about in those times. It was being weak, and when dudes couldn't hack it they were shamed. Ira was an American, and knew that the country needed him, regardless of the past, and it needed him bad. He was a hero and a wonderful Marine. If you read about him, he was a quiet and kind kid, not the type you think about becoming a Marine, but certainly the type you think about forgiving an old enemy.

  • @Barilazar1eo It's not at all. It's commenting on what war does to people. He was by no means alone in this. Almost every big name hero of WWII ended up pretty much exactly like Ira.

  • hotmn4u a couldnt save ma self haha

  • Frank Luke, Ira Hayes and the Officers and Men of the USS Arizona -

    American Heros !

  • AMEN!

  • IRA HAYES the best marine......

  • hayes, sorry

  • semper paratus ,ira hates

  • @rabblue coast guard LOL

  • Semper Fi Ira Hayes. Semper Fi Brother.

  • Great video description :)

  • Excellent video that goes with an excellent song, thank you for taking the time to make it

  • great video and tribute! Wish I could have thanked him in person

  • We are free because of men like Ira Hayes we can never be grateful enough to him. The song is on Johnny Cash's brilliant album Bitter Tears.

  • what album is this from?

  • great war hero although he was not a congressional medal of honor recipient

  • @DanielDipert He did not win the CMH?I always thought he did.All the guys that raised the flag.

  • i lov this song i cant understand who hates this song or the vid

  • im appache an cherokee and i love this song

  • He was a hero!

  • i cant believ that 17 people or dumasses hate this song it is showing so much about one hero/person

  • @mrprojoe1 Just a guess but the people that did not like this are probably kids in school that go around and hit the dislike button on videos to make other people mad.All of our young people are not like this. Some know the meaning of honer.

  • @profsat5 damn right............ im only 16 years old and i love this kind of music

  • 75% of people of listening to this probably dont even know who is ira hayes is

  • @Mills117 And 90% probably don't know who wrote this song.

  • Nice job, songbirdlaw4, I really enjoy this.

  • gpicon7 you are a fucking crackhead queer dirtbag

  • I don't think people r disliking the SONG ... I think they're "disliking the VIDEO. The song is a magnificent piece & I've always felt sad about Ira's fate. I'm sure he must have felt betrayed by all his fellow Americans. You need more images to fill out the "voids" in your video.

  • @gpicon7 your a fuckin moron

  • Native Americans used their tribal language for code talking. The Nazis and Japanese could never break this code. Therefore ensuring the Allies of defeating them.

  • I am Australian - Proud of Ya Ira

  • i cant beiev people hate this song who ever hates this song they need their heads check again

  • 15 people are liberal idiots.

  • my granpa died the same way. he was a naval aviator. he liked to wear nice suits and he had a moustache. wish i could have met him. thanks to all our veterans.

  • i cant believ people hate this song why didnt ira hayes get treated by his group or tribe

it is to bad cause if i was there i would so treat him with respect and honor RIP ira hayes and johnny cash

  • People don't understand bravery these days, I don't know it either but you have to totally respect it

  • don't understand why you would get dislikes...loved the video...great job

  • RIP IRA HAYES AND MR.CASH

  • The text at the beginning is incorrect; Three of the six men who raised the flag were not killed during the raising, but in the days after the raising.

  • i cant imange people hating this song this song is very good miss u johnny cash RIP :P

  • I saw that memorial! I have like, twenty pictures of it.

  • i dont get it. he went into a depression because he was famous?

  • @Rachulie Clint Eastwood's movie Flags of Our Fathers is all about that famous picture and has lots of Ira Hayes in it. Watch that movie :)

  • Comment removed

  • Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima WW2- Ira is at the left in the picture after they raised the famous flag and all the marines were waving etc ira is sitting quietlt to the left hand side.Typical of a native american to be in the center of things risking his life but then sit in the side lines quietly & humbly when the honour and photo call is arranged.

  • i lov this song it is one of the best songs he written and sung we will never forget you

  • an hero well danish as i am ill never been marine but transported plenty of weapons for them well am i proud NO i wish i could have done more has it been helthy NO drunk half the time ill guess i live better doing what i did than ill do at home im to agresive and violent after what ill seen and done to be among people to bad denmark isent big enugh to hide in SEMPER FI to the folks who fight for us now hope you all get rememberd just as well wish i was there and not here with an broken life

  • @hmmc4977 why don't you cowards get off your ass and defend yourselves, your almost as bad as the french

  • I hate country but i will always love this song just because Ira Hayes is the Most Bad Ass man so Semper Fidelis OOH RAH!!

  • @shroomsfolife

    It's hoo rah...

  • @shroomsfolife

    It's hoorah...

  • @shroomsfolife - Johnny Cash transcends country....he's so much more. A rocker, a folkie, a gospel singer, a balladeer, he could do it all. He loomed VERY large on stage, always had that PRESENCE, spirit, heart.

  • RIP PAT TILLMAN

  • One of the saddest stories ever told is that of Ira Hayes...

  • A proud man Ira Hayes, only to be broken by the country he bravely fought to save. I was about 7 or 8 years in the Navy and came home on leave. My Dad played this song which I liked, but my Dad said it was true. I was not convinced until I went back to DOD. I wish I could have helped him at Iwo Jima. Proud Kabi-Kabi ,Australia

  • we could use more non-whites in America like this

  • @gemcutter187

WTF is your problem? This is not about white or "non-white." Ira Hayes is an American hero who volunteered to fight for the US in WW2, regardless of his "non-white" status, and served with bravery and honor. That is how he needs to be remembered, not whether he was "non-white."

  • @8710cugel Master Status 1 = American Hero.... Master Status 2 = Indian. stfu you jerkoff

  • @gemcutter187 Throw away your crack pipe, sober up, learn how to put words together into coherent and logical sentences; and then the few adults around here might start to take you seriously. Until you can do that, go away and stop bothering the grownups, little fool.

  • @8710cugel Hello moron, you are the one who started messaging me.

  • ojibwe reporting in to say good job

  • good clip man did this awesome song proud

  • i started drinkin' hard but somehow was able to quit that shit... miracle

this song brings memories of hose that lost that battle. many friends and relatives. sad and sometimes violent. drugs, alcohol, drownings, fires, fights, murder and suicide, car accidents. i don't know what the life expectancy of the north american aboriginal male is these days, but i've lasted past many over the years. a freaky thing to think about

i may still end up layin' in a ditch

  • Rest In Peace Ira hayes...My brother all of us Native Americans are brothers and sister.-From a Proud Apache.

  • Rest in peace, Ira. Semper Fidelis.

  • I used to listen to this song very often when I was a child. When I think of how Ira Hayes was treated after WW II, I think of my childhood. I never had a good social life in my childhood. That is why I sympathize with Ira Hayes.

  • This is a great song by a great singer about an heroic and proud American. Anyone who thinks any different is an ignorant idiot. Listen to the words and you'll see what the story is all about. Don't try to read anything into it that isn't there.

  • I want the names, addresses, and reasons for the 13 dislikes.

  • @Hister333 me too

  • @Hister333 Lawlz. No Doubt.

  • @Hister333 from another "skin", screw them!!

  • @Hister333

Why? That is the whole point of the flag going up, so idiots can make their opinions known

  • @Hister333 Why? Who made you the thought police?

  • REST IN PEACE IRA HAYES MUCH LOVE TO YOUR FAMILY .IM A PROUD PIMA FROM GILA RIVER ARIZONA THX JOHNNY CASH FOR THE GREAT SONG .VICTOR BAREHAND

  • @mekomanaz Although Johnny Cash is probably the most well known person to sing this song it was actually was written by Peter La Farge. In any case it is one of the most patriotic songs about a man who should have been revered not left in the dust.

  • @abffchick17 real americans love him

  • @mekomanaz tell Ira thankyou

  • @mekomanaz Thank you for your comment and being a proud Pima Indian!

  • @mekomanaz I sir am not a Pima but I am a retired service member who was also born in Arizona. I would like to take this time to salute all service members past and present and future. you and your sacrifices are what made this country free. I know about the history of the Pima's and I hold them in high reguard. But my native american heritage comes from mexico Tarajumara. May the sprit of Ira Hays live on forever.

  • The irony is the only man who got to tell the full story is James Bradley, who avoided the press his whole life. The man who did his best to avoid combat, and tried to leave a quiet life. His son told the full story. God bless all of them.

  • A wonderful tribute to a man who fought for something he believed in, only for his bravery and honour to be a cause for Jewish profit and to be left to die in a ditch like so many others. May every man who dies for the love of God's earth rest in peace and may every Jew who causes this wrong rot in Hell.

  • @101Cromwell WHAT?!?!?! i think i was with you till the end? What The Hell Man!! What The Hell!!

  • If you truly respect this song you should just drop the BS

  • To all that lived and died at Iwo Jima!!! That sacred mountain. America is not what it used to be! It's become a lie!!!

  • @xXxHandOfGodxXx - "America is not what it used to be!" You must be Rich and White, because what it used to be HELL for the rest of us.....

  • Iwo Jima!!!

  • I usually never comment on posts, but in this case I want to say to the poster, excellent work. This is a great song that I was already familiar with, as a Johnny Cash fan, and the video accompaniment is well done. Thanks to songbirdlaw4 for a superb video post.
