Yes, it can. I wondered about this too. You might think that putting it nearer to the outer diameter of the tire would give a different speed reading than if you put it nearer to the wheel hub, given that the magnet will be traveling different distances. What may not be obvious is that while it would travel farther if mounted near the rim, it will also be traveling faster. Nearer the hub will be a shorter distance, but it will travel slower. So both points arrive at the same time every RPM.

Can the magnet be anywhere on the spoke as long as its 1 mm away from the sensor?
