You americans are so asshole, you don't have enough money to spend and use US$ 500.000,000 just for the propulsion test. Is the desire to feel like the kings of the world, but in fact is not since a long time ago. =D
THIS IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN MATH AND SCIENCE. Too bad Barack Hussien canceled the program (yes I know it back limited form) . The same Barack Hussien who says America needs more and and science. All talk all B.S.
you think that cost alot?....think about all the secret missions that they do.............who pays for them?............................look up the man who hacked into thousands of government computers and is facing up to 70 years and a 2 milly dolla fine...................listen to what he says........demand answers tell every one you know.post other comments such as this one.....and get informed.
the rocket is a replacement for the space shuttle. it is gowing to be extreamly cheep in conparisen to the space shuttle. because of this we will finish the (ISS) and in the process of that new medical advances can take place, so your mom may be abol to live threw the hypothetical cancer she may or may not get, so shut the fuck up, and get your info strate.
The US spends $2 trillion per year on social programs. This launch would buy you 2 hours of that spending, or 12 hours of defense spending, or 10 hours of Medicare spending. About $1.50 per citizen in the US. Tens of thousands of lives are saved each year using technology developed for the space program (medical devices, automotive safety, emergency communications, etc.). Do some research before criticizing something you don't understand.
Be embarrased for yourself, because I am stating facts and you are stating opinion based on ignorance. 2009 budget FACTS (look it up); Social Security, $644 billion, Medicare/Medicaid $632 billion, Welfare/Unemployment $360 billion, HHS/Education/Housing and Urban Development $154 billion = $1.69 trillion. So I exaggerated a little, but not much. The so-called war on terror and DoD spent $660 billion last year.
Don't assume I'm some rich Republican, I'm not. I am for universal health care.
As I said, I support health care. My main point is that we spend plenty on health care and another few billion from NASA will not make a difference. We need to stop corporate America from raping our economy at every turn. That $1.7 trillion in social programs is fraught with waste, fraud, and abuse by insurance companies and other corporations and it is not being spent on helping people nearly as much as it should. But my point here is that space is a good investment in the future.
Ares I is "NOT A MOON ROCKET. " Considering this rocket is almost the cost and size of Saturn V, I expect more from it than just the ability to lift 5 astronauts to LEO. Falcon 9 is half the size, carries "7" astronauts to LEO, MUCH SAFER, at a fraction of the cost. We should be working on Ares V and let space X develop the crew transport. The development of Ares I is going to push our Moon, and Mars missions back at least 7 years.
@Balefulmoon: Tampon? The Ares 1-X is the prettiest rocket I've ever seen. An original and unorthodox shape, glossy white, big splashes of color, a neat boilerplate LAS, a rare diagonal roll pattern, and USA written in big red letters, reminiscent of the close second, the Saturn V.
The moon is our balance. Without the moon, the earth would start to tumble(look "axial tilt" up on wikipedia), seasons would be more extreme, and a whole bunch of other scary stuff. The moon being where it is is very good for us.
wow that's cooool. I don't know about you American's (I'm Canadian), but I think what you guys (NASA) is doing is awsome, and should continue in perpetuity.

I'd rather my taxes went to rockets than paying for some deadbeat's healthcare.

well it is because of rocket technology like this that we have the ability to have health care as good as we do

the biggest part of our budget is bombs and bullets. not the right priority.
medical devices people dont get because they lack health insurance.
the upperclass gets cooler gadgets in there expensive cars, hooray!
your ignorance makes me embarrassed for you.

social security isnt welfare, i suppose you would just like to euthanize people over 65 wouldnt you.
medicare/medicaid is so high because everything is obscenely overpriced in the health industry and that is why there needs to be universal healthcare
unemployment was caused by deregulation initiated by the bush administration causing jobs to hemorage
if we do spend a lot on social programs it is a result of capitalism running rampant and lack of corp. regulation

Cool, concept, but they will have to do an aesthetic re-design for the final. This one looks like a flying tampon and applicator.

The rocket did what is was supposed to do. Was simply a test of the booster, The rest of the craft was made up of dummy components.
