michigan is not a good overall state for HS wrestling, maybe a few teams from the southeast part of the state, but if MI had some of there top teams go against the likes of st. ed, graham, perry, wadsworth, the matches would not be close at all
@litlekrucz215 Why don't you come up here sometime and step on the mat with us? Michigan doesn't have any top ten teams, but we have depth like you can't believe. St. Johns and DCC are our only two top-50 ranked teams, but we have over a dozen teams that have the firepower and the guts to compete with both. Michigan wrestlers are strong, fast, smart, technical, tough, and a bunch of goddamn warriors. Not a good state for high school wrestling? Take a trip north and prove it.
the past few years ohio has been extremely tough and i believe it is the overal hardest but if u do it year by year it changes like pensilvannia for sure last year and in my mind ohio this year with 3 four time state champs
Bulll, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan has the best wrestlers by far. California kids have never been able to compete. FILA Cadet and Junior Nationals at the Highschool level have always been between PA and OH. California is good. Ohio and PA are better.
@Matmonkey123: "california has never been able to compete" California has had several national champions over the years, I think that's pretty convincing. No one state out right dominates the rest all the time. In 96 I believe, california brought home 10 national titles. In 2010 Michigan brought home 5 or 6. In time the tides change.
@ShippuudenBoy108 The only reason California can compete with the rest of the country is because they have 37 million people and one athletic division. So, when California state champs get sent to a national tournament with state champs from Michigan, (Four divisions, nine million people) Ohio, and New Jersey, they're the best out of 37 million, as opposed to 2.3 million. Even so, they don't dominate, which goes to show that they're not that tough. Go watch Metcalf vs. Vasquez, and suck on that.
Yeah I have to say I can't agree with multiple state champions. I am from Indiana and we only have one individual state champ per weight class. I think teams should be split into divisions though.
Yeah wrestling is religion where im from, you simply couldnt wrestle all the opponents it would take given the competition limit. im from missouri and there were something like 350 guys in around here. you get 9 duals and 10 tournaments or you get 10 duals and 9 tournaments, per year. and you get between 30-50 matches. you do the math. Here there is class 1, 2,3, and 4. There is one state champion per class, and you can certainly bet the best wrestlers are class 3 or 4 here.
is 350 supposed to be alot of ppl? and we also have a 40 match limit before our state qualifying process because we would have way more if it wasnt there
True, I'm from oklahoma and we hold the Tulsa Nationals tournament ever year and people from all over the country bring there kids to it to wrestle the best and the Cali kids are there every year.

a "real" wrestling state? we do still have one state tournament unklike others who have several. in california, a state champ is truly a state champ.

Too bad the film documents wrestling in California and not a real wrestling state like Pennsylvania or Iowa. I'd watch it though.
