  • EMT-1: More facts about this accident in addition to those given by some earlier posters who knew what they're talking about. The right wing separated due to the heavy landing on the right Landing Gear. Fuel spewed from the ruptured wing tanks, leading to the flash fire seen in the video. Fortunately, because of the heavy rain, much of the initial fire did not take hold, while any remaining was quickly extinguished by the airport rescue team. The minimal fire was probably the main(cont at EMT-2)

  • EMT-2: reason why 312 pax & crew survived while only 3 perished. The fuselage came to rest inverted due to it flipping when the wing snapped off. At least 2 or 3 other MD-11 landings have ended in similar circumstances. One can be seen at the youtube video titled "FedEx Plane Crash at Narita International Airport In Tokyo", or click on "EntertainMeThai" immediately below then navigate to that title & click on it. There, I have provided some remarks in the "All Comments" section, EMT-1 to EMT-8.

  • There were only 3 fatalities (luckily no more, but still 3 died)

  • is this china airlines flight 642?

  • @10311118 Yes it is!

  • We need to think of a phrase beyond "Oh my god." It's getting boring.

  • I wouldn't have thought it was a 'he', based on the fact it crashed and all.... More like a 'she'

  • China Airlines Flight 642 was attempting a landing at Hong Kong. They were landing during Typhoon Sam in 1999. With gusts of 36 knots, the crew decided to proceed with the landing, a grave mistake. The plane touched down hard and flipped on its back, catching fire. Incredibly, only 3 out of the 315 people died.

  • OMG that was a crash! Look! That was a CRASH!

  • omg you are lucky to have seen that in real life. Wish it was me

  • This is Why Delta Airlines Never Lands in Sheer Weather like This Anymore..Id rather them Close Operations, and Cancel Landings before trying too land in Freaking bad WX.....

  • how the fuck did they survive that?

  • 312of315 survived

  • "He's crashed!" Thanks for stating the obvious.

  • Landing HARD !

  • wow only 3 dead thats amazing bu sad.

  • There goes my chinese food.

  • so as u see i see the md11 has a horrible record too! huh huh md11 are wack dc-10 are bad!

  • It wasn't China Airlines. It was China Eastern Airlines I believe. And it ended upside down. I think there were about 8 dead of the passengers.

  • :(((

  • WOW but it was China Airlines Flight 642 an MD-11 landing in Hong Kong and out of the 300 passengers and 15 crew 3 people died. RIP

  • it;s not china airlines ~~~~

  • oh my god x6

  • " Oh my god! Ohh my god! Ohhhhhh my god!"

    Grandmother: "Is Crashed!!"

  • There must have been a serious shortage of iq points in the brains of these people. Can't believe how many brain dead comments.

  • He had fireworks people. Jeez.. I can't believe you didn't notice that he just lit them toward the end.

  • So what happened exactly?

    And why'd they stop filming.

So they landed too hard? :S Stall landed ? =/

  • @madzane94 the plane roll out to the right during the flare process, right wing hits the ground, search from Flight 642,you will see the right answer..

  • @madzane94 Determined to be a downward wind gust due to typhoon at the time. Rate of descent during final 10 feet altitude exceeded landing gears spec. for safe rate of descent and hence, buckled the landing gear. ATC was speculated to be at fault for not advising pilots of unstable wind conditions. China Eastern Airlines MD-11

  • @johng669 Nope. The ATC did warn all flights approaching of the weather conditions then. It was up to the pilots of individual flights to decide whether to land or not. The China airlines pilot decided to land anyway and paid the price. Subsequent accident report clears the Hong Kong airport of all wrongdoings and faults the pilot squarely for the crash.

  • @trent8002003 I read the accident report out of Hong Kong too. The airline and the pilots claimed it was ATC's fault for not advising that there downward wind gusts. They were very specific about their claim. I agree, they probably did not prevail.

  • @johng669 No they didn't. China airlines was of course trying its darnest to cover its posterior. But It couldn't wriggle out of this one. It's Hong Kong International Airport on one side and multi accident prone China Airlines on the other. They didn't have a chance. But the MD11 was probably at least partly to blame too. It was so prone to flipping over. The MD11 was handicapped from birth as it was born of the DC10 which was never an esp brilliant design in the first place.

  • lol, the worst commentery ever!

  • why the hell would you say " lets see if you can make it, looks a bit shaky" way to jinx it -.-

  • of course there's gonna be casualties the plane just crashed

  • What happened was te right jet hit the ground, the plane flipped over and the back burned. But of all 312 people on board, only 3 died

  • the gaers broke

  • What went wrong at the last moment? The approach seemed normal enough. Even at the pt of the touchdown, the aircraft seemed quite level and even!

  • omg....omg he crashed!! NO SHIT SHERLOCK

  • however, it is fedex md11 I have pogramm there can exactly recognise mann this they must write in text purely fedex md11

  • "There's gonna be casualties!" Yeah, 3.

  • hello this is no fedex this ist TWA Oder KLM

  • @737airberlin think it was china airlines or someth. like that

  • @737airberlin :D it IS china airlines, I just re-read the description of the video

  • its so sad. how we watched everyones last few seconds of life...

  • omg theres going to be casualties

  • still think that guy saying "oh my god" sounds like mayor quimby from the simpsons haha

  • Just what they wanted eh? "let's go to the airport to see if we can film a plane crash in the storm".... Sickos

  • Just what they wanted... "let's go down to the airport in the storm to see if we can see a plane crash" ......sickos

  • "it crashed!" thanks for telling us that.

  • @stillcovalent

yeah like youd have something really intelligent to say when this happened in front of you

  • how did they survive that big fire???

  • My God!...see this video make me remember the crash of May 25 1979 in Chicago with an American DC-10....

  • @sentineladosol that accident was horrible..everytime I see that pic of the DC-10 upside down flying toward the ground I have the goose bumps

  • After I look this video, I remember something:

When I was 3 years old(in 1999), I was watching the news on TV with my brother, the reporter said she was in HK Int'l Airport, After that I looked a lot of people, their face like the ghosts on TV, At that time I didn't understnad anything, so I didn't think more. Now I am 14 years old, I remember it - the news was reporting CI642 crashed in HK Int'l Airport.

  • 315 ppl on board and 3 have killed

  • Damnation...

  • omg theres going to be casu.......

  • @countrytalk97 casualties? never! it's a plane crash!

  • What was that fire in the background before they crashed?

  • Thats the runway lights

  • its the runway lighting

  • no that was just lights

  • "Oh my god, oh my god. Its crashed" hahaha! very idiot.

  • ''Its crashed'' no fucking shit

  • horrid accident but amazing footage, also hard to believe only 3 dead out of 250+

  • @Jagermeister196 out of 315, including crew!

  • man that will be 10 years ago in 2 days :o

  • D: sad

  • ...Understand my point buddy, its pathetic to bring me down over something that happens over the internet everyday, well I guess you can keep going on about my spelling I wont care. Notice that I spelled everything right just for you special buddy so you wont "be bothered" thats all i got to say..soo..yeah!!!

    kthnxbai : )

  • i bet none of you guys have actually been to a NTSB website and look back at the history of this aircraft, seriously i havent commented in a long time and you guys are still commenting, im not commenting bcuz i dont wanna keep explaining this when i know i got the facts written down and not going on bout it even more, so keep opening your fucking mouths, yall dont know shit about aircrafts history, for the ones who think they know it all, do research and get your fucking brain to think, study!!!

  • does it bother youin any way? if you are bothered by that then its pretty dumb thing to get bothered by if you ask me :/

-2 plus mine to the pointless comment lol.

  • The only thing that bothers me, is your inexcusably poor grammar.

  • ok so your going to bag on my spelling, well look at you pal your something ehh? man i guess i use poor grammer because i forgot to space "youin"

well mistakes happen, you have made it before pal dont say you have not once, so if your going to bring me down about a "common mistake" then you are very sensitive about being bothered, i guess your cool because you can spell, well guess what pal, i can too its not very hard, you see me not using commas in my sentence but still you should understand

  • That tropical thunderstorm was Typhoon Sam (Luding) that was making landfall at the time

  • This isnt a crash Landing. The plane Crashed on landing due to the Tropical Thunderstorm that night

  • why do these pilots go with ego rather then using theyre logic and landing elsewhere, all crashes like this are where pilots try to be heroes. 9 times out of 10 the force of nature wins and innocent people lose.

  • .....

  • yes its your opinion, I think they are very safe aircraft when piloted and maintained by experienced people. Plus it a sweet looking Bird to. Just my opinion, I think the weather had some issues to

  • You forgot Tu-154

  • thats the pilot's fault, 36 kt crosswind and the tower told him not to get the throttle to idle and he did so it crashed, luckily only 3 fatalities...

  • To elaborate on my post, it's worth clarifying the tail comment was Narita specific only, however is an issue with the aircraft design. The cause of this accident was neglecting the maximum crosswind speed for safe landing, which caused hard landing due to the MD-11s already unstable control surface, the aircraft bounced and caught the crosswind, flipping it.

  • Wow, don't make idiotic comments on how the aircraft flipped over if you haven't read the NTSB reports, it's a well established MD-11 issue (Narita crash) involving the horizontal stabilizer on the tail being so small. And didn't involve a '4 degree bank' or whatever was stated and certainly wasn't due to the 3rd engine on the tail. Good lord, no wonder the media is full of bollocks when the general public is too.

  • oh my god!!!

  • You've 1 minute & 30 seconds to escape, before the fire breaches the aluminum fuselage.

  • BOOM!!!

  • Looking thoroughly the video, someone can see the "HARD" touch down of the plane with "little" bank to the right side. The hard touch down became from a windshear, and the result was the gear collapse (probably). I agree with someone that mention the difference between the wing lift generation which ends up in plane rotation.

  • "There's gonna be casualties!" No s..., Sherlock.

  • Miraculously there were only three casualies out of the 318 people on board.

  • FYI, the term 'casualties' means more than just killed. As defined by most dictionaries, it also includes serious injuries. In military use, it can also include any wound as the result of enemy action. According to records, this flight had 208 injuries (other than fatal) of which 44 were serious. :)

  • Was that the same team that dubbed Kungfu panda?

  • I dont know why they flip over everytime but i thing the Engine on the tail shifiting either left or right causes it to flip somehow IDK just a thought.

  • The plane landed at a 4 degree right angle, causing the #3 engine to impact with the ground and the wing to collapse, the plane then rolled onto its belly and skidded to a halt.

  • if you notice carefully, the wingtips (with the lights on each end) do not seems to hit the runway on touchdown - however it seems to explode!!! I wonder what really caused it to explode? Landing gear collapses?

  • i also dont know. why md-11 always flip to one side and wing broke and flip upside down

  • I think its becuase of the tail mounted engine i guess

  • by the way, why do MD-11´s flip on their back everytime they crash during landing??????

  • maybe becuase of the engine being mounted on the tail.

  • they often do. Thanks for the info before. Yes, it seems to be like the crash in Tokyo this morning.

  • Some think that, unlike the DC-10, the aileron is smaller and wings a bit shorter, making it less stable during windy conditions. Aside from that theory, it's a beautiful aircraft.

  • KLM is best thats it

  • That's an impressive video !! Why did the pilot "land" in that kind of weather ?!

  • what was with the first squeaky "Oh my God."....

  • "he's crashed!"

    really?

  • Did anyone die under that crash?

  • I seem to remember not. It rolled over but I think everyone got out. Correct me if i'm wrong.

  • 3 pax got killed

  • @sfmakten Yes, there was 3 people died.

  • Wasn't his Mandarin Airlines? (yeah, the subsidiary to CI)

  • What's amazing is only 2 of 315 people were killed. One eyewitness reported flames from the aircraft before it made contact with the ground. The flight was landing during a typhoon. One passenger aboard said people started clapping while the plane was still 100ft above the runway and he said it was an omen. He was right.

  • Correction: 3 people were killed! and yeah, it's true amazing that only three lost their life in this accident.

  • Ugh.

Atleast this video is real and doesn't involve rick astley in any way.

  • didnt get "rick rolled" lol!

  • oooooohhh..... thats bad

  • i hate seeing this video

  • Haha how sad of you.

  • The MD-11 was/is a very complex aircraft with very unusual flight characteristics.

On approach it maintains a higher minimum safe approach speed than normal aircraft and as a result has a much more noticable nose down attitude.

  • wow was not prepaired for that

  • Better to fly British Airways me thinks

  • nah try finnair go suomi hakkaa päälle suomen poika

  • Hrmf!

    China Airlines:

    Number of accidents: 19

    Fatalities 851

    British Airways:

    Number of accidents: 140

    Fatalities: 1125

    ?

  • I doubt british airways have had 140 accidents?

  • According to "jacdec" they had. But 72 according to wikipedia.

  • lol Britsh airlines flying for ever 70 years china maybe 10 years lol.

  • British Airways was founded in 1974. China Airlines 1959. Stop using "lol" it makes you look stupid.

  • hey dumbass. British Airways Ltd was a private airline company operating in Europe formed in 1935 which became what it is today. I would pick up a BOOK or do alot better reasearch online.

  • That's not the same airline! Birtish Airways was founded in 1974.

  • British Airways Ltd became British Airlines.

  • it was to airlines that formed to make british airways...BOAC and i forget the other one...so ure wrong dumbas..

  • B.O.A.C and BEA made BA (British Airways)

  • besdies China wasn't flying like the british were

  • pilot ignored the maximum crosswind limit 24 knots for that plane. 3 dead, 312 people survived.

  • That is why the aircraft flipped onto it's back. (For all those wondering) Gear failure, wing contact with ground, opposing wing producing more lift than that side now, speed still great enough to flip the aircraft upside down.

Exactly the same at Narita, 40kt crosswind and windshear. RIP.

  • dialogue after crash:

    "Oh my god!"

    "oh-ohh my good"

    "Its crashed!"

    "Oh my god."

    "aohh mai good"

  • Americans can't say anything else than ''Oh my god'' it's true

  • hahaha, that is true. oh my god oh my god oh my god, its gets so damn annoying

  • shit if it where any contry than america some 1 farther away would even call 911 or contact airport imedeantly instead of just standing there and saying omg

  • except this happened in china, not america. now what do you think?

i dont think calling 911 would have much effect anyways. pretty sure the airport FD will handle it

  • I don't think they were Americans. Listen to the accent.

  • um, what happened????

  • wow......

  • at 11 secs you can see it bounce

  • omg, when did this happen?

  • The date and time in the lower left hand corner of the vid is pretty specific on that point.

  • thats just sad

  • FUCK YOU SCARFACE AND FUCK.... YOU!!!

  • wow...dont fuss up here

  • Both pilots survived.

  • "Its crashed!" Well done bullet!

  • when?

  • oh, God!!!!

  • this poor bastards

  • q paso q paso q paso?????????????

  • exploto xD

  • Actually make that 4 deaths. the fourth woman was taken off of life support 6 days after the crash. Meaning she was unable to live without it. Her name was Lee Chung and she was 34 traveling with her husband and child.

  • actually 3 people sadly lost there lifes in this accident

  • Really? well poor people but i thought more people died.

  • crazy plane crash. but wow the car is full of douches.... and mayor quimby

  • lmao! mayor quimby! it sounds just like him.

  • No one was killed in this crash. 200 minor injuries after the right wing struck the ground according to the FAA accident web site.

  • I'm afraid your incorrect, there were 3 fatalities.

  • Yeah, Quimby popped up his head from somewhere! Very Funny! Chief Wiggum was probably in the investigation crew!

  • OH MY GWARD!!!!

  • What the hell is Mayor Quimby doing in the car at 0:17!?

  • whoa that does sound like him!

  • When was this?

  • lol look at the date and time on the video... that should answer your question hehe... i was in a plane that landed just before that crash! how crazy is that

  • The people in the video sounded ridiculous.

  • "Let's see if he makes it". So I think these guys knew that the plane had some kind of trouble?

  • They may have been referring to a missed approach it terms of 'making it'

  • well 5 planes diverted and 12 planes landed successfully.

  • i'm guessing it was wind shear (to do with the typhoon as well). that can really put a plane in a difficult position... hard to get out of

  • yea thats nuuuts. The plane flipped over on its back... how scary would that be. But 12 planes landed succesfully, 5 diverted and 4 carried out missed approaches before this plane landed. winds where gusts of 34 knots when it landed and the maximum that plane can take is 24...

  • can't post the link sorry
