How is slavery wrong? In the Bible their were slaves. You just had to treat them kindly to be righteous. They were humble servants and some of them became great men because they were intelligent and had skills!

@nevaseenamancry The bible was made from the europeans which considered all blacks as slaves. Slaves were not treated righteous; they were treated as less than a human. They were servants opposed to their will and only became intelligent and had enough skills to avoid death from slave owners.

The origin is with the creator not with sending them back there-the thought was a thought perhaps however it was not  a thought whose origins superceeded the place that the creator provided.

Man, these were real debates. The first participant speaks for an hour, his opponent for ninety minutes. Then the first gets a thirty minute rebuttal. Just imagine how much knowledge they had to have on the topic to fill such time.

That was because Lincoln believed that the United States with it's view Declaration of Independence, that all men were created equal, were the best way to EVENTUALLY end slavery.

My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.

That was because the Constitution defended slavery, and Lincoln was sworn to defend the Constitution. The one thing that he would not compromise on was its spread into any new States.

Lincoln didn't care about slavery. He said it himself that if he could save the union without freeing them, he would.

He and thomas jefferson thought blacks should just move elsewhere and start their own colony to avoid more problems.

Absolutely rediculous, if you read any of Lincoln's writings you will see things are completely the opposite. Lincoln was greatly troubled by slavery, and Union troops marched to battle towards the end of the war on a large part to abolish slavery.

He was greatly troubled after the civil war began. He and Jefferson actually did want to ship the black people back to Africa and colonize there. He did change his views afterwords, but that doesn't change what he originally thought.

lol @ that last comment...anyways, Old Main at Knox College is the only surviving structure from the debates, it was built just a year before in 1857.

It's the title factor. Yes, Oberlin expanded to buy about 10,000 acres in Knox County, Illinois. Knox would establish and organize in 1850 The "Female Collegiate Department". A religous battle over much of it's early history for control of course. Anti-Slavery colleges needed women for nursing more and more as the war continued.

If you have any idea what lincoln douglas or public forum debate is, then you should be intelligent enough to know that lincoln said this speech in 1868, and that they didn't even have color T.V until the late 40's. I think if you read the lincoln-douglas debates you would know what he thought of slavery. He personally was against the institution and opposed the expansion of it. He was a good freind of black abolitionist Fred DOuglass. That being said he never originally intended to abolish slavery. He simply didn't want it to expand into the north and west. SO his policy was slightly different from his personal view. IF he had his own way slavery would of have never been.

Shane -- true enough. But there was no way to end slavery, as far as anyone could see, at the start of Civil War. Most in the North wouldnt lift a finger to end slavery. Many soldiers never would have joined the Union Army if they thought this war was about slavery, including Grant. Lincoln thought -- and so did Lee -- that Providence opened a way to end it. When it became possible to end it, Lincoln moved with all speed and compassion. God bless him.
