My friend introduced it to me. She told me it was her "End of Summer, Beginning of Fall" song.
We were sitting with our cafe mochas in the Nordic Bakery just off Golden Square in Soho, London. We indulged in people watching as they passed by the big window in the wet blustery day outside. Our tummies warm with cocoa and caffeine and the smell of cinnamon rolls. She was right, that really captured the moment.
Thanks for uploading this and all of the Bix stuff. As someone who spent his first 25 years on this planet in Davenport and is an active traditional jazz musician I really, really appreciate it. It hits home...in more than just one way =D
Bix had a haunting, poignant, unique style of composing music especially suited to the piano. The great tragedy of his short life is compounded by the loss to the music world of other compositions that would have been published, no doubt, had he lived a normal life span. We are grateful for what he has left us. Bernard Lhotzky's rendition of "Flashes" and Dick Hyman's of "In the Dark" would have pleased Bix.
You can find them in the various biographies of Bix, including:
"Bix - The Leon Bix Beiderbecke Story" - by Philip & Linda Evans, "Bix: The Davenport Album" - by Rich Johnson, with Jim Arpy and Gerri Bowers, "Bix - Man & Legend" - by Sudhalter & Evans, and "Bix - The Definitive Biography Of A Jazz Legend" - by Jean Pierre Lion.
Beautifully put together ! There's something haunting about Bix...perhaps because we really know so little about him...sure we have books and research but we also know how that can all get lost in the ages in some respects ..we can't help wonder what he was really like! thanks for this contribution...what an awesome talent. Now were listening to rap and shit hop..does that tell you anything about our music appreciation ? I often think were going backwards in musical culture
Dear MookRyan: Just wonderful. One of the more interesting thins about your videos is that you can recognize Bix at any age. Most of us change but with Bix, if you saw a pictiure of hiim as an infant, you would recognize him in Whiteman's band. Uncanny. What a service you dofor everyone who loves Bix! alkuhn1
Ms Ryan: This sure is one beautiful and touching montage you've put together. The composition is especially the revelation to me. I started listening to Bix five or six years ago; I thought I was getting to know his stuff pretty well (the hot stuff). But I admit now that I might have prematurely poo pooed his classical work (is that what you'd call it?). Well, thanks for framing this one so perfectly that it's drawing me to go back with new and more open ears.
You've captured the feeling; superb construction, timing, choices of images. I especially like the last shot with the riverboat, and the gradual panning toward the clouds...
Every picture I've ever seen of Bix shows him playing or holding what looked like a trumpet, although he was he supposed to play the cornet - does anyone know whether he used a cornet wound as a trumpet, or did he actually play a trumpet?
Bix played cornet. Most of the photos in which he has a horn, he is holding a Conn Victor 80 A. It was a "long cornet," sort of a cornet/trumpet hybrid developed by C.G. Conn around 1914. It has the mellow sound of the cornet, but with the projection of a trumpet. It is still considered a cornet though it is longer than the traditional cornet, and a couple of inches shorter than the average trumpet. Cornets have conical bore tubing, whereas a trumpet's is cylindrical.
Nice recording of Flashes I hadn't heard before and a very good tribute video with images pertinent to Bix and presented in a professional manner. Congratulations. This is one of the best videos I have seen on youtube and I have a Bix discussion group on Yahoo and I am going to mention this great video and provide a link to it. All appreciators of Bix's music should see this!

I can't help but think about what we lost when this young man passed away so early in his life. This is an authentic tragedy.
