  • that was ... BREATH TAKING !!! stunning !! thank you

  • Perfect performance...beautiful dancers and music. Singers were fantastically unforgettable.

  • @1122Mrdaddy One thing about this halau is that they use the singers that made the songs popular. These songs are played on the radio, and if possible they will get the original artist to sing for them. This one is Hoku Zuttermeister, in 2005, they had Ke'alii Reischel, in 2004, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole for Nani Ahiahi and Kainani Kahaunaele singing Ka Hinano 'o Puna. It makes a difference when you can get the original artist singing a popular song, and then to see hula being danced to it, perfect!

  • Still my favorite Hula Auana of all the merrie monarchs thus far.

    Much Alohas <3

  • Einmalig schön !!!

    Thx for posting.

  • what is the first song they are dancing to?

  • @deeplydeepali watch the very beginning of the video, you will see ka'i (entrance), and ho'i (exit ) with "Lei Ola'a." The mele or song for their main hula is "Ola'a Beauty."

  • @hankakah thank you! i downloaded them immediately off itunes

  • @deeplydeepali np, enjoy! You'll also hear at the beginning the announcers describe what the songs are about. I am part Hawaiian, am glad that Youtube allows people across the world to watch and listen to videos. I am biased, but I think that Hawaiian music is so relaxing, peaceful, meaningful. They have double meanings, a song about a flower, thing, could also be about a person. So many times there are a lot of love songs, endearing, think of these as singing about something you cherish deeply.

  • @hankakah thank you, I will. ^_^ I dance too, but I'm on hiatus. definitely no where near as good as the dancers in kamuela, but I hope to be in those stands one day and cheer them on and maybe get an autograph from the kumu

  • @hankakah Every word you described about Hawaiian music is very much true :) I've been apart of Heilani Halau here in Australia and have come to love, enjoy and respect the Hawaiian culture. This is absolutely beautiful, I love their hula noho, they make it look so effortless. Just beautiful, I would be so happy to dance half as good as these beautiful ladies. I'm Samoan and haven't known much about hula dancing, now I am just IN LOOOOVE with it :) mahalo

  • So beautiful and elegant!

  • I am in awe of this halau, their timing is so good, watch their spins, they spin at the same rate. They are also looking at the same direction at the same time watch their head turns. They are constantly in motion into different formations, without missing their timing. They are equally spaced out you don't realize it. Their hula noho is the first time i've really seen a halau dance like they are standing, if just watching their top half, you would think they were on their feet dancing. Awesome!

  • This is so beautiful! I've got to visit Hawaii someday.

  • I've always been a fan of halau hula o' Kamuela

So graceful from the tallest to shortest dancer....big or small everyone moves as one.

  • Does anyone have lyrics to lei ola'a and translations?

  • this is my favorite year since aunty paleka... im so proud of u kauionalani ..

  • So graceful, so beautiful.

  • @hankakah, thanks so much i have to find that song. Is that Aureana Tseu dancing in the front? I wish I could come to Hawaii and just learn how to dance. Maybe my next trip we just love Hawaii so beautiful!

  • @elysa0426 aye, that's her, she becomes Miss Hawaii 2009, she's very pretty. Maybe if they shown this during the Miss America she would've won.

  • @hankakah Only thing though is that she was running for Miss USA. Miss USA doesn't require talent. Miss America does yes, and if Aureana ran for Miss America should would blow them out of the water!!! :)

  • such a lovely dance...you could really feel the expression of each movement. What is the name of the song? "Auana?

  • @elysa0426 when they show the name of the Halau, you will see Lei O'la'a as the ka'i and ho'i, where they enter and move into position, and then exit. You will see Mele as Ola'a Beauty , mele is their primary song they will dance to. So when they start kneeling, that is Ola'a Beauty. The two songs meld well together, so to the unaccustomed ear it will sound like one continuous song. So entrance and exit are to Lei Ola'a, main dance is Ola'a Beauty.

  • There are times when the hula and the music match so well, this is one of them. Something to behold to see, to hear, it puts you in that other worldly place, sense of calm, joy, pride, serenity. You begin to appreciate the kumu hula for having the vision to teach and present their feelings through their dancers. When a halau can seem so effortlessly perfect, everything is second nature, so much hard work. Woman front and center so pretty, they all are, and like the flower they represent perfect.

  • this is beautiful!!! i dont know what it means but i love it!!!! i wish i knew how to hula dance!!!!

  • @mzcenawwe at the beginning of the song, you will hear from the male announcer what the song means. You will also see the flower they are singing about, it makes up the leis they are wearing.

  • @mzcenawwe at the end , Pua Kanahele is asked what she thought about the song, she mentions she really like the hula noho, which means a sit down hula, noho = sit. To appreciate what they are doing so gracefully, all those watching this should try getting down on your knees, feet extended, and then sway your hips like they do, and then do the back bend without touching the ground behind them, it does take practice and strength. I used to dance hula, so really appreciate what they are doing.

  • Such beautiful and graceful dancers!

  • Thank you, SNohokai.

  • just one word... beautiful..

    it moves me

    wonderful dancers

  • This performance was so amazing. I loved it. Mahalo Kaui for being such a creative kumu.

  • This auana is my favorite forever!

  • they are so beautiful and so graceful to move like that...it's amazing

  • I like their skirt. Shape and length... so graceful. I imitated the design for my pa'u skirt :)

  • I love ola'a beauty! one of my favorite songs... they did a very good job, AS ALWAYS!! darn u halau o kamuela! ;) jk...

  • This performance gave me chills at Ia 'Oe E Ka La that year. I make sure I catch kau'i and uncle kunewa's girls when ever they complete. I hope Kau'i and company come this year, but I don't know because Uncle Kunewa is a Judge this year.

Ia 'Oe E Ka La in Pleasanton, CA Oct 31, solos Nov 1 and 2nd Group Kahiko and Auana.

  • AUNTY'S LOOKING DOWN WITH SUCH PRIDE KEEPING HER VISION ALIVE AND BEYOND MUCH MAHALOz TO KAUI AND KUNEWA.....

  • Mahalo nui loa for sharing the aloha through this performance. Reaffirms why I love to dance hula so much. Mahalo many times again! I can watch this over and over!!!

  • so beautiful and graceful.... i really enjoyed it!!!!

  • ACTUALLY, doing backbends are a staple in this hālau, and is apart of the regular practicing of basics. According to Kumu Kauʻi, this came to him in a dream and personally, if I saw 35+ dancers from Kamuela, which weʻre used to seeing, in this number, I think itʻd look awkward. PLUS, olaʻa is a rear and hard lei to create...i bet finding this 9 was difficult enough. BEAUTIFUL JOB Kamuela, i look forward to their performances every year!!

  • i go to a different halau...so i dont no all ov those stuff...how do u no all dat stuff???

  • oh yeah, and if you didn't know..Ola'a Beauty is a waltz; not your typical Hawaiian mele - hence the reason why it's an even more beautiful song to see performed.

  • I never tire from watching this group. They are fabulous. I lived on Oahu for 5 years and miss things like this. Does anyone know a way do download to a dvd disc? I would like to view it from my tv for a clearer picture.

  • You can always buy the merie monarch dvd from 2007...

  • LOL ME TOO!

  • beautiful!!! it makes me proud to be hawaiian and from hawaii. i am going to start dancing.

  • i already dance hula...

    my kumu iz iola balubar...

  • Noticed that the Kumu did not use all of the girls from the Kahiko to this Auwana? Very smart. From what my niece (who dances for his Keiki Hula Group) had told me, Kumu had a dream about using 9 dancers wearing this lei and performing to this particular song. Wow! This is the BEST auwana I've ever witnessed. Absolutely beautiful!

  • i don't tire of watching this video over and over again! full of grace and feelings! beautiful!

  • watching merrie monarch 2008 from oahu... CONGRATS to hula halau o kamuela for 1st in 'auana (wahine) - you guys were gr8 :-) aloha...

  • wow. i can actually understand this :] haha

  • hoo! timing is so much harder w/ a 3/4 time mele, they did an awesome job! Beautiful!

  • Goodness that's so gorgeous!! I really wish I grew up in Hawaii! Why did my Dad have to be in the service?! Could've been there! I would've loved to learn how to do this, but this isn't exactly the kind of dance you learn in Georgia...

  • @xxcpxx go to mele.com and click on resources, Hula halau and then go to Georgia to find groups that teach hula that may be near you

  • does anyone know who the artist and name of song is?

  • 'Ola'a Beauty is the name of the mele

  • Ola'a Beauty, & the man who sings it is Hoku Zuttermeister. I think that's how you spell his last name anyways... I'm not sure if it's an old song, but I did a google search & I couldn't find any lyrics or anything, except for the name of the singer. :]

  • @trixigan

Frank kawaikapuokalani Hewitt wrote it. go to huapala.org and you can click on o and scan down to Ola'a beauty and they lyrics and translation are there

  • @nikkclrk Ola'a Beauty and Hoku Zuttermeister

  • flawless:)

  • graceful and beautiful!!!

  • wonderful

  • It doesn't get much better than this. Wonderful.
