..a direct hit by a tornado= abandone your car and lay down in a ditch. However, in some cases it may be better just to stay where you are and duck down, covering your face and eyes. I remember watching this video years ago. This one was NOT an F5 at the time of the video. Sorry LOL. . Storms = my lifetime passion ;-). Peace

actually is correct= air flows into a tornado. They do "suck." lol. What happens when you put ur finger over the opening on a hose? The water flow speeds up. In smaller places like underpasses; the wind speed can double.
It's true. Meteorologists think winds speed up when it comes to places like overpasses. I don't know if they are certain about this yet, or why it would do that, but that's what they are sayng.
The reason why is the wind tunnel effect. Further, hiding under an overpass gives you no protection. In may 3rd 1999 during the oklahoma city tornado outbreak several people were killed while taking "Shelter" under an overpass.
Further, no protection means you will get clocked by any debris.
Tornadoes suck up cars that are ahead of them with wind, slowing them down. Outrunning one is never guaranteed. They did the right thing, although over passes are usually not as protective as the one shown in this video, and this tornado was a rather weak one. Still, it was strong enough to destroy them in their car had it caught up with them.
Thanks for the heads up. I suppose a first instinct would be to seek refuge in an automobile and you'd think it would be double protection in the car under the bridge. I was wondering why they didn't stay in the van. I have a dreadful fear of being in a tornado. These powerful and destructive storms are quite captivating and even beautiful when viewed on video.
As long as your smart you will be fine! I've gone through two of them and they are scary but you have to keep calm and know what to do and where to go.
that not a good idea to hide under those bridges because the tornado just gets stronger going under them it would be better if they looked for a ditch
In everyday usage, vacuum is a volume of space that is essentially empty of matter and where they went IS the safest place to be the sides of the overpass has little lips to crawl into. Im not saying its the safest but the side of the road..come on. There is always falling debris and u have a more likely chance of getting picked up by it cause u have nothing to hang on to and the debris in which u speak of i didnt see ne thing more then some picked up rocks and dirt
thats why people go to basements, if not for the danger of a collapsing house.
true, debris IS a problem, but lie down covering your head with your arms and/or a small shield (briefcase, etc.) will protect you from most serious damage. and it is a known safety fact to go to the ground. "Duck and Cover" works for more than just atom bombs, Jacky boy.
though if a tanker truck falls directly on you, you'd be fucked anywhere you were, soooo...
lmao yea those god damn tanker trucks ruin it for everyone lol not being an asshole but a briefcase lol nooooot the best example lol I like the Jacky Boy
@malpaul Depends your distance from the epicenter. If you're a good distance away, it'll shield your eyes and protect you from the blastwave throwing shit. So yeah, it probably won't help you in most cases but it does help.

It is VERY wrong. You have no protection, you have the wind tunnel effect, and any debris being blown around will hit and likely kill you.
Look up may 3rd 1999 Oklahoma city tornado outbreak.

I weigh a 100lbs, that would've sucked me right out of the underpass. Frightening.

isn't under an overpass even worst to be at when a tornado goes through? my understanding was that the winds accelerate while passing one

I had heard it was not recommended to seek shelter beneath a bridge when in the path of a tornado but I think this video proves otherwise.
dorotwhy 2 years ago 2
your not supposed to stay in the car if your under a bridge cause the winds pick up more supposably and thus picking up the car.

Just a Heads UP
DO NOT HIDE UNDER OVERPASSES
i know common myths say to, but its not debris you're hiding from. The overpass acts like vacuum when the tornado passes overhead, sucking things out
you could see that in the vid at 1:02, watch the debris on the ground inside.
what you SHOULD do is lay down face down in the ditch beside the road, FAR away from your vehicle
as it WILL be tossed.
Yur welcome.
DragonGuy123456789 2 years ago 3
In everyday usage, vacuum is a volume of space that is essentially empty of matter and where they went IS the safest place to be the sides of the overpass has little lips to crawl into. jackavlanche 2 years ago
we should really ask mythbusters.
the thing with the DITCH (not just the side of the road) is that its below ground level.
the tornado is a moving mass of air and u wont be picked up if you're below its path.
DragonGuy123456789 2 years ago

ya, true that.
your best bet for a protective covering would probably be a riot shield.
but seeing as MOST people dont carry those around with them every where they go....
