do you have to go to school for this?? im from Mexico and got inspired into car designs sense the new car Manstretta looks butt ugly and have some ideas of some designs but dont know where to start...
well.......its true, but the thing is, getting things for free is awesome but would you work for free or to get robbed ??....im not saying that what u say isnt true but they work theyr asses off to make great tools and also to get money.......same as u, or u will.
You have to look at this at another view... this software costs ALOT of money and I don't think students could afford it. So if someone would download it illegally and practice to become good then this might help him in his career, maybe he will have to use it the whole time for his job and probably purchases it ;) Whereas when there was no illegal download then I don't think there would have been alot of tutorials on the internet and not as much discussions about it.
Your opinion is your opinion. At least I get paid for it. And no, there is no underlay. If you had practiced what you preach, you should know that and you would have noticed it.
Simple: If this is not how YOU sketch a car, feel free to demonstrate how a REAL designer does it, since you did not see there was no underlay or anything else on there. I would be interested.
fair enough. i can't be bothered to make a video for youtube but the reason i said it looks like you're using an underlay is because you sketch a silhoutte and then fill in the part lines. You're not sketching surfaces or in a 3D manner. that's all. a bit strange to me, but whatever. truce

because u arent a designer you dont understand the concept generation stage of design and how at this stage the designs are very loose and exxagerated to help communicate the idea across. Being realistic at this stage would restrain the creative mind. And the guy in this video is very talented might i add.
get to art center as quickly as you can! ccs is falling fast and a far, far second in respectability in the professional world. 20 years ago ccs was good. and why would you wanna live in detroit? get the fuck out now, if you can!
CCS works better for me... they are more connected with the auto industry, Art Center is more 'artsy' besides, I hate the snobby environment of the school, I can't afford a $60K/year art school and being with a bunch of old rich guys as peers. Almost all my ID friends here either got accepted or even attended AC before coming to CCS. Getting a BFA of Auto Design makes you elite anyway.
i dont know if a BFA in autodesign makes you elite, but ok. whether ccs has more ties with the auto industry is questionable too. either way, you better get bfa quick before the auto makers in detroit all go bankrupt anyway. i graduated from ccs about 12 years ago. it was a school in trouble then and detroit is a city long dead. once you graduate i highly suggest you get experience around the world and dont spend your life in detroit or dearborn. that's what i did and i never looked back.
Stay within Detroit? Hell no, I despise the city... I would actually prefer going to India (or other emerging car markets), Korea etc. The only interest I have in the big three is to possibly buy a few shares dirt cheap just in case they do make it...
Because you can directly use it with your 3D modeling, sketch over layouts, get the curves straight from the sketch without losing any of the dynamics. That's why.
From my experience, these curves always need some adjustment before surfacing.
When you sketch, the nodes of the curve are unevenly distributed so the curve needs fairing. This is why there is no practical use for curves coming directly from a sketch.
It's just faster to create the "dynamics" of a curve directly as NURBS. You will get much cleaner models as a result.
The things is, if I make a sketch in 2D, the character of the line is pure and very essential. If I sketch within Alias, I don't have to go through stages to get that line, I can immediately use this Pure Sketch as an uderlay to get exactly that Pure dynamic in my curves. With any external program of hand sketch, I would have had to do a lot of extra to do this.
Also, the dynamics in the pencil and brish tools are really dynamic. So you can use a perfect curve as a guide, and draw a dynamic curve, with "real" looking start and finish, make a rendering in 2D look more like a perfect Sketch, with nice dynamic line. Can't do this in Photoshop.
Sorry to have confused you. I normally set up the base layout in Alias, and use that as an underlay for my perspective sketches, then use those sketches as an underlay for the curves. It works for me, and I know that I am faster and closer to the design intent than most because of this method. I am not an Alias salesman, so I don't have any versted interest in wether you accept or believe what I say.
I just know that based on my 24 years of experience as a car designer, and my 14 years of experience with Alias, this is the most efficient and pure method I have come up with for myself. If you know a better way, I would be more than interested to see it. I am always willing to learn.
Thanks for explaining the initial layout. I just don't want people to get the impression that Alias can magically convert perspective sketches into 3D models.
You can see the full tutorial for free at cardesign dot tv / forum, and if you have a better method, I and many others would love to see it as well, so maybe record that and post it on that free community site. I am quite curious.

Hmm question im not sure if your dutch but i will ask it in english if i see the movies of you i see that you use 2 ways to draw a car start with a circle or just start with the line that walks arund the car is this because one you draw on a computer and the other one on just a paper piece or other reasons..?
In starting with an elipse I set the basic surround of the object I draw, hopefully ensuring it fits on the paper ultimately. As I proclaim in my Foresee Online Car Design School Lessons, your creativitiy should allow you to draw anything from any line, and having this elipse as a guide to me has proven helpful. Yes, Dutch here, but living in California. Oh, the school is at 4c-foresee dot com and click on Car Design School.
cool! im a automotive designer by trade. cant seem to get the hang of drawing on the computer, much prefer by hand and paper. makes it look so easy on there!
The hand-eye coordination itself would be potentially problematic, but takes a day to get used to. Otherwise the Wacom Cintiq is a route to go, where you draw on the screen.

You can't claim that you "don't have to go through stages" and then describe stages that involve underlays.
The above tutorial shows sketching in perspective. How can you capture any useful lines from that?
You won't unless you are sketching directly on a plane or surface. This tutorial does not show this, it's just 2D like I said in the beginning.
