Love Eartha. One of a kind for certain. Must agree that the Nina Simone version is where this song reached its other-worldly quality. ( and why other artists tributes are based on Nina ) Meeeow ! , POW ! , ZONK even !
I see absolutely nothing wrong with Eartha's interpretation...she is VERY expressionistic and remember that she's only the singer. The arranger is the person who sets the general tone, the cake if you will. The singer is merely the icing, which can be sugary sweet or rich and delightful, with or without decorations. Saying that Eartha missed the intent of this song is like saying Vincent Price missed the boat with his Poe films.
. I adore Jeffs version because it absolutely showcased his glorious god given voice and also that he chose to cover an old Eartha Kitt song. She was an absolute legend who will never be replicated. Her life story is as amazing as her voice. Eartha wrote an autobiography titled Thursdays child that starts with her running away from the plantation in the dead of night with her mum. She sang in many languages and could be seen walking her pet leopard along the Champs Elysee ! What a woman.!!
Agree, she's got a great voice but she completely lost the intent of the song. Nothing wrong with her version, but it doesn't come near the passion of Jeff Buckley's.
How did she lose the intent of the song when her version was recorded in 1953 and the song was only written in 1950? I believe your argument should be that others added the passion to the song. Personally I would have to say Nina Simone did it best.
EARTHA was one of the very best!!! She really leaves a gap....so true. All that`s left now for me is my enormous collection of music on her and fotos, letters, clippings, posters, etc, etc
I was lucky enough to see Eartha Kitt perform some 20 or more years ago. It was a performance I will neveer forget. Her passing leaves a huge gap in theatre, cabaret and cinema that will never be filled. She really was unique.
After listening Jeff's a great second..

@sonopaolotorre Simone yes , Buckley makes it DRAG. Brooks has a powerful voice. The only singer to have major chart success with this song.

This is not the best version by her though, I had a record of her doing this, and the backing group was more in "Tune" with this brilliant song.
Actually the best version of this song is the one by Jeff Buckley

Fantastic voice, rubbish backing group. I still prefer Elkie though - nobody has her strength and emotion, in my opinion.

C'mon, she sings it even cheerfully in some passages of the song!! Great voice for some sort of music, but definitively.... Jeff Buckley forever!

What a gifted woman, an amazing voice, and a natural ability to sing in melodies not compromised by adherence to a rigid cultural format.
