@ChristopherRittas ... well it doesnt HAVE to have a groove behind it ... but regarding this video ..they are all soloing over a groove so they are all grooving on one level or the other ...Gadd`s is just more obviously a groove and to some ears , yours and a lot of others , you prefer Gadd`s interpretation ... i think my favorite part is Weckl`s cymbal work during the intro solo he does ..its so elegant

I'm 38, and I've been playing since I was ten. I can play anything from AC/DC to Rush and I can tell you one thing, Dave Weckl is by far the most versatile drummer I've ever heard. The man's wrist work and rudiments alone are astounding. He teaches the principle being as good on one side of the body as the other. This is the most difficult thing to do, and yet he seems to have mastered the concept. I have yet to hear anyone more capable, and I've heard everyone from Nicko to Buddy.

People get easily fooled by drummers because drums are inherently exciting. But very rarely do you find people who know what they are doing. Best drummers are found in Africa and Latin America. Americans are far behind, but a few stand out: Chick Webb, Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Harvey Mason, Billy Cobham, David Garibaldi for technicality. In recent pop I'd vote for Stewart Copeland. (Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Jo Jones, Elvin Jones, and many others were strong in their own genres.)

First drummer's cymbal work is very crude. Buddy Rich set the standard for cymbal work, but this guy doesn't have the chops for it. The audience applauds because they don't know what they're missing. The second drummer is not bad, but didn't say much; a good high schooler does about the same. Steve Gadd comes out with a story, a statement. He's all rudiment based, but the beat is very simple, so nothing particularly special. Good latin drummers do that stuff without trying. Meh.
