F you HAL you took money from an elvis picture you made and used it to pay for this good film. you used elvis and we know you and col parker did to him.
Thomas Becket (also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London, and later Thomas à Becket; circa 1118 – 29 December 1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion.
He engaged in conflict with Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church and was assassinated by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after the death of Thomas Becket, Pope Alexander III canonized him.
@Richard Elden-To disagree with me is fine. But to wish death and disease on someone puts you in dangerous waters indeed. Doubtful if your yet 30yrs. old. and I doubt if you ever had to hold your only brother down as he thrashed and gasped for air while dying of lung cancer. The words we speak go out and return to us in life. We all harvest what we sew. Good for good, bad for bad. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" Proverbs18:21. Don't bring harm to yourself now that you know truth.
Criticism of Burton is unfounded. He must play Becket as an intellectual, analytical and manipulative. His passion must be subordinate to the cerebreal arena, until he finds his true calling, he plays it well indeed. O'toole is a powerhouse. His commanding presence with masterful diction as King is unsurpassed in film. Why he did not win for "The Lion in Winter" is still a mystery. Easy to criticize an actor. If talent the caliber of O'toole&Burton is in Hollywood now,it's a well kept secret.
@watayapupuya Dude, calm the **** down. Burton is not a great actor, but he is better than most of the hacks nowadays and O'Toole is levels of epic that so few actors have ever reached.
If you want a boring studio-bound piece of crap with stilted dialogue and Richard Burton, watch Cleopatra.
@YoshiDirect Really? Burton was among the greatest actors in history & has appeared in numerous excellent films. You should watch some of his movies. BTW, besides being married to 1 of the most beautiful woman in the world, (Elizabeth Taylor) he was also part of a clique of hard drinking British actors, which included the likes of Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole (saying: The guy was more F&@$ed up than Peter O'Toole on his birthday!), Richard Harris & Peter Finch. All great actors, but drunks.
I'm just saying, they were part of a clique.group of hard drink'n, Brti/Irish actors of the same relative era. The actors in question are among my favorites BTW. Do you like them/any of their movies? What's your favorite film genres & eras? I tend to prefer films from the 60's through mid-80's. The genres include War, Action/Adventure, SciFi, exploitation (black, biker, etc) & some cheap/cheesy, 70's "B" horror. Of course I also enjoy many other genres/eras.
@gjc82071 I love Burton, O'Toole, Harris, and the like. I grew up watching all of their wonderful movies. I remember watching Richard Harris tell wonderful stories about his drunken escapades on Johnny Carson. I miss this group as much as I miss the Rat Pack.
The first time I saw this I thought Burton did the better job. However, after seeing it later, I came to the opinion that O'Toole had the more difficult role as Henry changed from adolescent king to a powerful one--all alone. Also, at times, O'Toole's eyes give off pure hatred and malevolance.
Happy feast day. Where are those movies today gone? Look out! Don't sleep in the faith otherwise the blue demon in avatar will come and possess u. I am not joking. Praise be Jesus-Christ. Happy feast day again, 29 dec.
@JuanMacready There seems to be some discrepancy among historians as to Becket's birth and origin, some making him out a pure Norman, and others a Saxon, and others again half Saracen
@Kingtheoden84 No need to pray for souls departed. God is omnipotent, and has already decided who is saved and who isn't. He doesn't need our help, and there is no such thing as Purgatory.
@Kingtheoden84 No need to pray for departed souls. God is omnipotent and has already decided who is saved and who is not, without our aid. There is no such thing as Purgatory, and prayers for the dead are repugnant to the Word of God.
@jupitermoon10011 : That is a recent doctrine and innovation, and alien not only to Scripture but also to the understanding of the Church Fathers going back to the first century.
@JuanMacready Only God (whom you are NOT) knows ultimately what was in Richard Burton's heart, or what his standing was with Him. I thank Burton for the gifts that he shared while on earth, including bringing St. Thomas Becket "to life" via this great film. His life gave more to the world, his faults notwithstanding, then your spiritual pronouncements ever will.
@JuanMacready You're funny! Instead of addressing my response to your nasty comment about Burton, you go from attacking him to attacking the film itself. You feel qualified to make spiritual pronouncements about others AND you're a film critic. "Jaun". Rhymes with "yawn".
I liked Lion in Winter more, but this is a beautiful film. I didn't realize there were of the same king. I"ll have to try to watch them back to back sometime.
One of the easiest-to-read / prettiest set of credits of the 1960s. This should be a standard to modern art designers often create unreadable credits.
One should be able to find this in their public library (or via an interlibrary loan) if you want to see it on a bigger screen. "The Lion in Winter" is another must see imo.

Does anyone know the Gregorian Chant used in the opening? I'm thinking "Dies Iraes" but I could be wrong.

@hobyboy07 It´s "Veni sancte spiritus" a hymn supposedly created by Stephen Langton (a contemporary to John Lackland), sung mainly during Pentecoste.

Henry II was part Frankish, Norman, Saxon and Scottish.
So the representation of him as someone with some disdain for the Saxons is probably not true to history.
He was also red haired and gray eyed.

First of two films in which Peter O'Toole played Henry II; younger here than in
Lion in Winter, set in 1183. The king,
having made a martyr of Thomas Becket,
unintentionally or otherwise, makes a
show of reconciliation with the late Archbishop of Canterbury and new
Christian saint.
