  • I have respect for both the movie and the play, obviously I never got the chance to see the play but I have a tremendous respect for Julie and Audrey is equally beautiful. They both interpreted it in their own way in their own right. They've made peace about it between them and so there's really no point in arguing.

No Audrey didn't do the singing for the movie however Marni's voice is very similer to Julie's in style. I Love them both, it's a wonderful role :)

  • :D Julie andrews :)

  • Feliz cumpleaños a la mejor interprete de My Fair Lady .....Miss Julie Andrews

  • I do not understand why did play Eliza's caracter by Audrey Hepburn.

I think they (producers and directors) have stolen this film and the global success from Julie. She would has deserved it.

  • @RichardElden I can't believe you are here too! How can you sleep at night saying things like this about such a beautiful, elegant and lighthearted person?

  • @RichardElden

You honestly did not like it? Well I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. See ya!

  • @RichardElden

What are you talking about? She played her character beautifully alongside Cary Grant, just like she did in "Roman Holiday" alongside Gregory Peck.

  • Is it just me or does she really remind you of Megan Follows who plays Anne in Anne of Green Gables? I think there's such a resemblance!

But Julie sings thins amazingly, such a classic :)

  • Sorry but Audrey Herpbrun don't sings at film. Is Julie Andrews who does. She have a magnificient voice.

    MCV

  • @abejamayatree In the film it's not Julie Andrews' voice, it's Marni Nixon.

  • @DianeMaria100 - Julie Andrews was in the stageplay and she did her own singing!!! This video is Julie Andrews singing. The film version is Audrey Hepburn and she did not do her own singing!

  • Sorry but Audrey Herpbrun don't sings at film. Is Julie Andrews ho does.

    MCV

  • Julie Andrews was prettier than Audrey Hepburn and had a better figure. But no one could've taken Hepburn's place in "Charade."

  • @wincipoet: They used a different person for audrey's singing bits.

Love both versions but julie andrews is my fave.

  • This woman is my idol. She is so talented and elegant and on top of that she's beautiful and humble!!! I want to be herrr. . . .

  • I think it's a shame it wasn't Julie Andrews in the movie. I think she would have done much better than Audrey Hepburn.

  • @feuip yeah at least she would have sang the songs of the movie xD

  • @feuip Yea well...they wanted a big name to lead the movie and at the time Julie Andrews was not that well-known so they went with Audrey Hepburn. But on the bright side, by not doing My Fair Lady, Julie Andrews was able to do Mary Poppins. So thats a plus haha :)

  • IMO, Audrey had more beautiful looks but Julie's singing was way better (both ladies were good at acting)

  • @RichardElden What is wrong with you?!!! Audrey Hepburn is AMAIZING!!!

  • 2:41 YouTube video: Julie Andrews singing I Could Have Danced All Night; My Fair Lady.

March 15, 1956: My Fair Lady premiered on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theater production in history [Mar 15, 1956 - Sep 29, 1962].

  • Man, it's a shame you can't see Julie Andrews as Eliza! ): I enjoyed Audrey's my fair lady, but I felt it was lacking in the chemistry department. I felt more chemistry from these pictures than Audrey Hepburn's movie. D; Ah, sob.

  • Julie didn't get to be Eliza in the Movie but she got Mary Poppins instead...I cannot see anyone else playing the role of Mary.

  • @RichardElden ok again.. FUCK YOU and you die of cancer!

  • I think Audrey was perfect in My Fair Lady and I´m really glad that she got this role..

  • i love how julie andrews is now old, but she is still STUNNING!!!

  • Lovely video! Julie Andrews is so beautiful! <3

  • Lovely, so refreshing to see her once more!

  • in a modern times,

    the women are better.

    they are educated &

    have instruction! A

  • Ok so... I'm obsessed with Audrey Hepburn. However Julie Andrews was the rightful Eliza.

Audrey Hepburn gave one million dollars to warner to play Eliza.

She wasnt trying to be mean she just wanted to play it. She was very upset when she found out her voice was dubbed over and later secretly called Julie to apologize for taking the spot. Classy actresses.

  • So in 1964 The Academy Award for best picture, best director and best actor went to "My Fair Lady" while the award for best actress went to JULIE ANDREWS for Mary Poppins. I think Audrey did a great job but I bet the Warner Bros. were kicking themselves in the ass for that one....

  • OK, so I was wondering why they picked Audrey Hepburn (who could NOT sing) to play Eliza instead of Julie Andrews. Rumor has it that Warner Bros. wanted someone that was "known" and would bring in movie go'ers. Julie was known mostly as a "stage" actress at that time. "My Fair Lady" was released in 1964. The same year as another popular movie-MARY POPPINS, starring none other than....Julie Andrews????

  • The original tops its following versions and this applies to My Fair Lady. Julie Andrews would have played Eliza Doolittle in the film version had a more sensible producer purchased the filming rights for this musical. Jack Warner was anything but insightful; he was just obsessed with making profit out of this production and damn stupid. Did he not get convinced of how the audience would evaluate his decision?

  • @Bluejeans0701 Warner was a stupid McCarthyite self-hating Jew.

  • AND julie andrews is VERY talented but that doenst make her the only talented person! audrey hepburn was an awesome actress!

  • i wish they had filmed the julie andrews stage version of my fair lady, i love that musical sooooo much!!!! Audrey Hepburn was good too though :)

  • i always feel so safe when I listen to julie. Takes me back to my childhood and the feelings I had as a child!

  • "Each to his own. But I am not queer. Julie Andrews never did know what sex she was."

  • @Grifiki shut uo

  • I think Carey Mulligan will be replacing Keira for the new version.

  • What Class & What Talent;Julie,you Rock!

  • Great voice, can't take that away from her.

  • Oh, I do love Julie :)

  • I love Julie too!

    Sooo much!!

    Thanks for sharing this! :)

  • From what i've heard, when Hepburn was offered the role she said that they should offer it to Andrews for she's made for the role, the casting's responce was -fine if you don't want the role we'll give it to Elizabeth Taylor- in which hepburn then accepted. This is what i've heard from Docos and IMDb!

  • He is "just" perfect! My favourite!!! :)

  • Both Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn are two of my favorite actresses of all time! I think that both brought something different to the character Eliza Doolittle. Whether it was on stage or screen, Eliza was portrayed wonderfully. Two friends were given the chance to let their talents shine and both did too great of jobs to be negatively criticized.

  • Actually, they weren't friends at all.

  • @JuanMacready Oops typo actually

  • Comment removed

  • But then she wouldn't have gotten/done mary poppins

  • I've read somewhere that Walt Disney would have delayed Mary Poppins production if she had gotten the part...so she could've done both! =(

  • its a shame she dint get the part

  • Julie will always be the FAIR LADY to my eyes and ears. I actually don't like the movie because of Audrey.

But it's no a reason to be rude and leaving disgusting and cruel comments about her! Audrey was a fine actress.

I think Julie is the best but that's only what I feel.

We have to respect Audrey's memory and not write comments like the one below!

  • MGM producer Arthur Freed had the 2nd highest bid for the MY FAIR LADY film rights. If he had won, then Andrews would have starred in the movie.

Freed begged MGM to buy the rights to CAMELOT in the early 60's - but the president of MGM refused him. Freed planned to star Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, & Robert Goulet.

It's funny how things work out, isn't it? - if Freed had his way, CAMELOT would have been made before MY FAIR LADY, and Julie Andrews would have starred in both of them.

  • I agree it was a shame that she was passed over for the film and kudos for her for refusing to the do the film version of camelot

  • if Julie Andrews read the comments on this video she would probably hate the stuff we wrote about Audrey they are both awesome people and Julie is a great role model and i think we should all be more like her :)

  • You are so true about that! Julie is the perfekt role model and she would be sad to read bad things about Audrey. Julie is such a lovely person who just want whats best for everyone. =D<33

  • @Poppins91 I agree she is an amazing actress and singer too!!!

  • Have you noticed that they're making a new version of My fair Lady with Keira Knightly as Eliza? I think it's terrible! I can't understand how they can do that with such a classic film!!! ='(

  • why would they do that? :(

  • wait to see the movie

  • The original was fucking CRAP.

  • @PeterFirthFan

    oh yes,you again.

do you have nothing better to do with youre time?

    none wants to hear it,

if you dont like the film STOP commenting!

  • @PeterFirthFan with a little bit of luck we have heard the last of you!

  • ever heard of modernizing? we need to make new versions of everything

  • @OHHYESSAHH, Your comment is so old! You need to post a new version.

  • @Poppins91 oo no!!!! why would they do something like that..it is a classic!!!! I like Keira Knightly but don't remake such a wonderfully made movie!!!

  • The 1964 movie was a piece of fucking crap with a far too old cancer-ridden cunt Hepburn badly miscast.

  • @JuanMacready they cast audrey for publicity, julie was not a well known on screen actress, but Mr Walt disney saw the star in her and snatched her up, and look what good came outta that! mary poppins<3 and julie won the er... oscar i think it was, against audrey and then went on to thank jack warner from my fair lady... she got him--all in good fun of course, she's got manners. lol.

  • Yeah, except Hepburn wasn't even nominated.

  • @Poppins91 Knightley has stupidly dropped out and Carey Mulligan from An Education is a likely replacement. The remake is going to be shot in realistic locations. It sounds interesting. They should have picked Anne Hathaway. She has a great voice and she has a Natalie Wood like charisma on screen. And Emma Thompson is writing the screenplay.

  • @roccoh21 can anne hathaway do a convincing cockney accent though? American's cockney accents a la dick van dyke make me cringe!

  • @itbejess It can't be any worse than Hepburn's awful attempt.

  • @Poppins91 "You must be stupid. My fair lady had nothing to do with Julie Andrews. She was from a different era. It depends when you're born. I prefered my era and not yours."

  • @Poppins91 They are?? That's terrible! Why would people mess with classics like that?

  • @RegineNoelle23 Well, the 1964 version was fucking awful.

  • @Poppins91 oh its just another classic that Hollywood has ruined. To be honest I have never seen JA in the role of Eliza, but she is very talented, Im sure she a fantastic job.

  • @Poppins91

seriously?? this is one of those movies that needs to remain a classic, left alone, and not remade for an audiance of people who likely wont' have heard of it until now, and won't appreciate it at all. ಠ_ಠ wasn't Pretty Woman enough of a remake? Bah.

  • @FrankClanton we have grown accustomed to your comments, now do the decent thing and be quiet!

  • @julie11061 I compleatly agree with you. its sad how people can be so rude to both women. they both have amazing voices and i personally think they both would have been good Elizas, but Audrey just happened to be the one to get the part. Julie was filming Mary Poppins at the time, and i dont think it would be as good if anyone else had played Mary.

  • @Unintensify exactly :) que sera sera

  • @julie11061 I was wrong. she just wasnt asked to be the part. they wanted someone already known to play eliza in the movie.

  • @Unintensify well that's still fair enough. maybe if julie andrews had been in it it wouldn't have been as succesful as it was just because she wasn't known then.

  • Its a shame she lost her voice.....she is a true artist and hr voice will be missed

  • It is a shame she lost her voice, my friends mum went and saw her perform live I'm so jealous!! ok seriously @peterfirhtfan nobody wants to hear it we can make up our own minds.

  • i dont think shes not pretty, she beautiful of course

  • Comment removed

  • Julie was never asked at all.

  • okay, really you make too big of a deal out of nothing, sorry i made a mistake

i was already corrected okay (Y)

    and a

what happened was that audrey said that it should be julie but they wanted it to be audrey

  • I love at the end of her Honor at Kennedy center Carol Burnett says:

She's our fairest lady. She's my favorite thing.

    I AGREEEEEEE!

  • julie has a great voice, but audrey is beautiful, and eliza is considered to be beautiful when she gets all done up by higgins. julie doesnt have that. both amazing women who deserved everything they got in life. love them both sooooooo much.

  • YOU DON'T THINK JULIE IS PRETTY??? What are you smoking? She's gorgeous!

  • Julie is like my idol so I was upset that Hepburn was cast for the part.....but I have seen interviews of Julie saying that her and Audrey Hepburn are actually good friends now so as long as Julie is fine with the whole situation, I am too! =)

  • The real problem is that they were both truly wonderful women, both sweethearts and truly great people. You help one you snub the other. Besides, how many broadway-to-movie's are there where the broadway star also starred in the movie version? Just look at Hello Dolly, or Sound of Music. I think back then, it simply wasn't common practice to integrate broadway stars with hollywood. The people weren't being jerks on purpose—it was the culture back then.

  • We must not forget that Rex Harrison in his acceptance speech said he owed his Oscar to TWO fair ladies. And that was very classy of him to do that.

  • I don't know how much influence Rex Harrison would have had over the casting of Eliza, as Jack Warner was such a fool that he shopped around for the role of Higgins before finally casting Harrison in the role. Warner supposedly offered the part to Cary Grant, who not only refused the role, but also told Warner that he would not even SEE the movie unless Warner cast Harrison in the Higgins! I always knew Cary Grant was a classy guy!

  • Warner's original choice before Grant was William Holden, who was still big box office at the time. Holden curtly told him he was nuts if he didn't cast the show's original Higgins, Rex Harrison. Harrison didn't have much pull in the casting of Eliza; he hadn't been a leading man in Hollywood and big box office draw in well over a decade. As for Warner, Hepburn was still hot after "Tiffanys" and Andrews was a Hollywood unknown. Her Oscar for "Mary Poppins" really haunted him up to his death.

  • Audrey is an all time favorite but this was Julie's movie to make. You can't blame Jack Warner for snubbing her because he was always just a fool. The REAL culprit here is Rex Harrison. He should have stood up for the person who made the show. Had he reufsed the part unless the REAL Eliza Doolittle was cast,The greedy, ridiculous Warner would have given in. Rex must have had to pay for one of his divorces or other scandals and art be damned.

  • it iscool

  • I love Julie Andrews. Don't get me wrong I loved Hepburn's acting in My Fair Lady but Andrews would have been a million times better. I really wish Andrews would have done both. Oh well. I still think she is amazing.

  • They didn't want her! Can you believe that!?! They snubbed Andrews for Hepburn. Unacceptable.

  • 46 years ago ... get over it. Google julie andrews audrey hepburn oscar photo and see the images of two wonderful ladies, Julie holding her Oscar with no jealousy seen from Audrey. Julie was thrilled to win that Oscar as she was just as new to movies when she won it as she was new to Broadway when she won the part of Eliza.

  • In response to all of these, my personal opinion is that Audrey did a wonderful job at acting the part and with the transformation. I don't think she COULDN'T sing, but there were many, including Julie Andrews, who were better singers than she was. Julie Andrews was never upset or prejudice against Audrey Hepburn for getting the part, so I don't think any of us should be either. What a great example she gives to everyone! :)

  • Well put :3

  • @LaMissa1 You have a lot of class. Jack L.. Warner didn't want Julie Andrews period. Ms. Hepburn was a world class beauty and one of the most enchanting movie stars of all time. Each have their gifts but I do think Julie Andrews was very frosty on screen until much later in her career.

  • Kike boy McCarthyite Warner was a fucking idiot.

  • @LaMissa1 Niether could the idiot Andrew's.

  • julie is #1 on my singer or actress list!!!!

    go julie!

  • Language aside, wasn't Julie Andrews busy at that time doing either Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music so was unable to do that role as well?

I think Audrey made the better transformation to the beautiful princess but Julie has the better voice.

Wish they had Julie in the film Camelot instead of that Redgrave gal who, like Audrey, could not sing at all.

  • Julie couldn't do it because the studio chose Audrey Hepburn over her, for some unkown reason. She's stunning.

  • The reason is not unknown at all. Audrey Hepburn was an international superstar at that point, meaning guaranteed ticket sales, whereas Julie Andrews was a Broadway star, which meant she was virtually unknown to a majority of the nation at the time of casting.

  • There really is a great contrast in how my arms and neck get chills from Julie Andrews and never from Marni. I criticize from cheap seats as my singing does make a dog howl. :)

  • I've never seen these pics. Thanks for posting!

  • Julie Andrews is my hero. <3

I can never watch the film version because I'm so used to Julie's amazing voice.

Whoever saw Julie in MFL are so lucky!

  • Yes I totally agree with you!! You are so right!! =D

  • same here

  • 1:54+1:59+2:06=love her dresses!

i want my personal mary poppins even if i'm old for having one!!:p

  • Julie is a credit to ENGLAND! We Love you Judy!!

i think Julie couldnt do the film (for some reason)i saw an interview about it!! so Audrey did it, i LOVE Audrey as Eliza!(although its not her singing voice)i still love it

  • I was fortunate to see Julie in MFL at (I think) the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane LONDON

It was in the mid 1950's when I was about 10 years old and Julie was about 19 or 20

I fell in love with her then and still LOVE her

Thanks for your great collection of stills

    dave xx

  • OMG!! Did you see Julie in my Fair Lady? Lucky you! I wish I could too! She really is the GREATEST!! <33

  • SHE MOST CERTAINLY IS ! An inspiration to us all. And it is impossible to even imagine HOW MUCH JOY she has brought to MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people !

    dave xx

  • Yeah I totaly agree with you! She really is the greatest role model to us all! <33

  • Sadly I don't have the programme from MFL in London but I do still have the LP record I bought at the time on PHILIPS Minigroove which is taken from the Broadway Production and recorded on March 25th. 1956 at Columbia Studios in New York City.

  • Oh my god! Lucky you! =D

  • WOW! you are so lucky :D

  • It's painful for me to watch the movie version after hearing Julie Andrews' definitive and exquisite version on Broadway. Marni Nixon did the vocals for Audrey Hepburn, but it just wasn't well.... Julie - the "real deal"!

  • Yeah I know. Julie had the perfect voice!

  • Why didn't Julie Andrews appear in the movie My Fair Lady? Audrey Hepburn did instead. Julie did it first, didn't she?

  • Yes she did the stage version both on Broadway and in West end in London. But she wasn't very famous at the time, she hadn't made any movie so that's why Audrey Hepburn was in the movie, her name was really big at that time. But yes Julie was the first real Eliza Doolittle. =D

  • Thanks for posting. I love it! I haven't saw a lot of these videos!!

  • I'm glad you like it! Thanks for your comment! =)

  • thank you for this video! many photos i haven't seen before :)

    just love Julie!!!!

  • Thanks for you lovely comment! I'm very glad you like it! =D

  • Let's be glad she didn't we wouldn't have her Mary Poppins if she had - and we do have here voice and some great clips of my fair lady!

  • Yes that's true! =D

  • she should have made the movie,at least she would have actually sung with her own voice.

  • Yes I agree with you. =D

  • I agree with you. It was unfair to choose Audrey Hepburn who can't sing and let Julie dub her...

  • julie andrews didn't dub audrey, someone else did!

  • she is truely amazing and her voice is so beautiful!

most people my age only Know her from mary poppins and the sound of music, but thanks to youtube i've found lots more of her wonderful voice.

    Lovely vid!

  • Yes I totaly agree with you. These days people just know her from the princess diaries and the shrek movies or mary poppins and the sound of music. I think that's really pity because she has done so many other great films and performanses. Thank you for your lovely comment! I'm glad you like the video. =)

  • Julie Adndrews is the best!!!!! she has an amazing voice and she is the best actress!!!!!! i love Julie Andrew!!!!

  • Yes she is really the best!!!! She's amazing!

  • thats it im jelouse lol! i wish i had a voice like that and worked with Rex Harrison! Julie Andrews has a really nice voice!

  • Although I wouldn't want to give up Mary Poppins I think I would've liked the film much better with Julie Andrews. Audrey Hepburn isn't bad but I really don't care to much for the film as is...plus Marni Nixon's voice doesn't seem to fit, for me at least.

  • I too think that Julie would have done the film beautifully! And you are very right about Marni Nixon's voice to Audrey's acting and the film. Julie had the most beautiful voice in the whole world! She is simply the best!

  • I totally agree! Julie Andrews was the perfect Mary Poppins and I adore that film and wouldn't have liked her not to do! But she was also the perfect Eliza! I also think I would have enjoyed the film more if Julie had done it rather than Hepburn, it would have had more authenticity to it because the voice and acting would have been the same person!

  • I have to admit that even though I love Julie Andrews singing- Audrey Hepburn just looked so much better in the film, and also was a better match for Eliza. Andrews is still too "proper".

  • Maybe you are right and if she would have done My fair lady (the movie) we wouldn't have a Mary Poppins! ;)

  • ..as I heard, MFL was already done, when MP started being filmed... I wish, we could have had both with Julie..

  • Oh yes I wish we could have had both with her! It would be wonderful!!

  • Wonderful! Julie is so amazing. My mother and I have loved her forever! What an amazing voice. Great job:)

  • Thank you so much for the lovely comment! Julie is amazing! She is wonderful! And her voice is the best ever!

  • lovely...julie looked so beautiful...they should have given her the part in the movie ^_^

    thanks for posting

  • Yes she looked amazing she alwasy has! I agree with you, they should have given her the part as Eliza, but think of this: If she should have been Eliza we woulden't have A Mary Poppins! A that's an amazing thing too! Thank you for comment!

  • thanks for sharing!

  • You're welcome! I'm just glad if people like my videos! Thanks for comment! =D

  • Nice pictures!

  • Thank you so much!
