Sorry for your loss. However, it's not considered an extreme sport for nothing. Oftentimes it's the most innocuous of river features that kill. However, injury or death is a risk that kayakers knowingly take. Usually though, experience gives us the judgment to avoid truly bad situations and, failing that, the skill to get out of them unscathed. However, Mother Nature doesn't play favorites so, like all extreme sports, it's simply a matter of odds and time before something serious happens.
because thats what kayakers do. Most of us train to run drops, we aren't just out there hoping for the best.
