I just dont like when people learn karate it's like hell yeah. I can take on the world because I have a black belt. Know because people on the streets are not going to fight you like you do when you spar. If you tap out there not going to let you go. There trying to rob, rape and kill you. There out to hurt you.
Most karate here in the US has gotten watered down so badly. When I did martial arts. I trained and trained and trained. Eat right, Worked out, stretched, dranked plenty of water. Bought a punching bag and speed bad. Worked on my techniques, punches, kicks, blocks, locks etc. My thing was : Adaptive techniqes, (you have to adapt to whoever your fighting) flexibility, SPEED and POWER. Because if am faster and all my kicks and punches feel like a sleage hammer hitting you then your in trouble.
The only problem I have about this video is. When people in the streets run up on you, your going to get your head cracked. Because most people that train in karate will be doing more thinking about what blocks to do or kicks or arm/hand locks. Its easy when your sparring against whoever in your class. But lets be real here. Criminals arent worried about there stands and punches and kicks. There just trying to hurt you. Hard and fast by any means.
karate is in MMA...karate is what inspired american style kickboxing, witch is very widely used in MMA, and has more then proved its usefulness in MMA... "karate is useless agenst BJJ and JJ"...,thats the hole 'stand art v.s ground art' question...and on that it depends on weather or not the fight goes to the ground...but not useless, if you knock out a ground fighter before he goes to ground, is he useful?...your just another MMA fan that knows SHIT about martial arts...be quiet.
@BluePittbull666 I am a shodan (1st black belt) in Isshin Ryu Karate and youre an Ultimate Fighter fan lol, what have you studied? huh? and what you dont know or maybe you do is that Georges St Pierre is a black belt in KyoKushin karate, Lyoto Machida is a black belt in Shotokan karate, what you need to understand is that these big names that everyones heard of have roots in karate its the foundation for which they built further skills, trash talking karate makes you sound like a little bitch
@BluePittbull666 In your defence, I'm sure you're not technically an idiot. It's just that you don't know what your talking about. And simon the wing chun guy - not too many martial artists share in your open dismissal of other systems. It's about how you train, and how you apply what you learn. Your 'story' proves nothing but your ignorance...
Karate shite. 4 guys came in my shop in Manchester thought they were hard as fuck n I ask how many clubs u have, 1 replied just 4 clubs I sniggered. I said I do wing chun so showed this flat nosed Bobby hat old git some moves then his false teeth fell out of his mouth. Proves wing chun is more effective than old man art crap karate. Heehee. Points to me ryu karate international shite;-)
i thought it was excellent, I study Aikido and from one martial artist to others I'd say you stuck to good self defense principle and showed great technique. I'd like all the kung fu and kenpo guys how say karate is to slow to see this. Don't be upset if not everyone understands it looks different from what one normally sees as karate, so they're bound to be confused.
I study in Randolph, Massachusetts with Sensei Mike Murphy. My dad says they're going to have a party at The View, a restorant where he works at for Sensei Robert Campall.
EdithDenise- i´d say that we need to know the uechi-ryu more closely to make judgement... I consider their puching as good, and we can´t forget that this is only exhibition.. :) their defence and strenght is better recognizable in the movie...
I practice shotokan karate do and there is a lot of emphasis on hip rotation when punching and kicking. Is uechi-ryu the same? I don't see any hip rotation or kime technique and that makes their punching seem weak even for black belts.
I am not really qualified to answer but IIRC, there is no hip rotation. Everything seemed to be about keeping the center of gravity down, body square and well balanced. Think of turning yourself into a fireplug. I would not say the punches were weak. If you ever saw the Okinowans in person you would be amazed at the power.
well there you go, were a different style so obviously we dont do things the same as shotokan. to much hip movement telegraghs our intent to strike so we throw our punches with as lil movement as possible, our power comes from our knuckle punches using our extended index finger knuckle, in chinese styles its called a phenex* eye. sorry bad spellin.
Yes it is defensive...to a fault. When I studied I always wondered how if I was attacked by two attackers..how could I launch an attack against one...run over him and run away. That and the fact that I couldn't curl my toes discouraged me. Eventually I quit and took up the .45
One of the most difficult things to learn is how to come within centimeters of someone without harming them. That level of control and awareness, knowing right where you and they are are is every bit as necessary as to enable you when you do mean to do and do need to make full contact.
PS, I actually have warded off a RL attack using the elbow strike/back-fist. In that instant I knew just what to do and executed it just as I'd been taught, attacker went down (and I got the hell outta there).
It didn't really have a name I don't think, the dojo itself was really a very large pole barn in Three Rivers, Michigan, run by Sensei Steve, his wife and his adult son (all of them blackbelts, Steve was a 4th Dan). It was a very good dojo though, and they worked with me through my challenges (being disabled). Its been a long while. I need to get back in to it at the dojo where I live now.
If I ever heard his last name (and I don't know that I ever did) that doesn't sound like a name I heard, so I still don't know..
but if the one you mean had a dojo in Three Rivers odds are good it would be the same (Three Rivers is a smaller city its not likely there would have been two Uechi Ryu dojos let alone two with a sensei steve in them)
I am really glad to finally see an example on YouTube of Uechi Ryu that includes a woman student.
Now, if I could just get off my duff, get my gi out, practice what I can of what I know after many years (and stop being so afraid of the notoriously rigid and difficult dojo near where I live now, one that requires tournaments as part of its progression, which is not as it was in the dojo I trained in and where I was nearly at a brown belt level) -- and just get on with it again myself

I believe That this video conveys the completely wrong message about martial arts in general. Martial arts should not be about show and tell it should be about defending yourself. This video to me is quite ridiculous especially considering that everything is practised before hand
DTTRIX .. this video is all defensive . Uechi Ryu`s mantra is there is no first attack in karate . In other words all the techniques are blocking ( defensive ) and counterattacking . They show the technique before the interpretation because that is the traditional way of doing these sort of exercises . They are called bunqaui . It means to apply techniques from the kata practiced in the style . All the techniques are defensive .
Of course everything is practiced beforehand. That's how one learns timing and distancing. No one supposes that if you're attacked in the street the attack will come precisely as practiced. The practice is nontheless useful as a platform from which modifications can be made. Karate has been practiced pretty much the same way for centuries (though with refinements, of course). It only survived because it actually proved useful and effective.
Its not like reading a book and you just 'know' , your body and brain have to learn together, from many repetitions so that in a real life setting your body and brain know what to do.
What Sweetfly66 below said is true & very well said.
I could not start a fight with what I know if I tried, its all block/strike block/strike.
Uechi Ryu is not for bullies, it truly is self defense.
The Dojo I trained in specialized in teaching disabled & vulnerable people.
Not to familar with this style though the ongaurd position is good movements and speed crisp and clean. Sensei has excellent form! Techniques very effective in terms of reality.
i like uechi ryu, they have some of the coolest looking kata. the only thing im not so sure about is some of the strikes, very little use of a regular fist..all one knuckle fist (phoenix eye fist in kung fu) and their front kick is done with the big toe, as well as the kakushiken, striking with the thumb knuckle...they sound kind of dangerous, unless you have tremendous conditioning on a makiwara.
i wasnt talking about vital points..i mean weak anotomical structures, like the back of the knee, or the temple. not necessarily pressure points. shorinkarate was right, uechi, and alot of other traditional arts are for patient people who are in it for the long haul. if someone wants quick results for self defense, they wouldn't do well with "classical" uechi for example because they wouldnt have time to develop their tools, their knuckles, and/or toes for example. theyd have to modify it.
I have taken Uechi ryu Karate and my teachers said you can use a normal punch or ball of the foot kick. Plus if you are wearing shoes the toe kick is still effective casue you have the protection of the shoe and it may be harder then the toe. That's if you are attacked on the street.
you confirm my point. they allow you to do that because if you dont have time to condition your weapons properly, you will injure yourself more than your opponent. a neccessity though. but you can still use the traditional strikes to weak parts of the body
I just dont like when people learn karate it's like hell yeah. I can take on the world because I have a black belt. Know because people on the streets are not going to fight you like you do when you spar. If you tap out there not going to let you go. There trying to rob, rape and kill you. There out to hurt you.
