  • I just found an evans lift just like this one! seems WHSmith like them.

  • Great video

I like these old evans lifts.

these are rare. I have only ever once found a working old evans lift. But I have found several old evans dumbwaiters.

  • Yep, not many lifts left like this now, many have been modernised. This lift is in excellent condition, very smooth and quiet for a hydraullic.

When i worked at Nuffield Orthopedic Centre in Oxford in 2002 there were 2 old Evans lifts dating from the 1960's with the small and round black buttons (along with the orange "lift coming" indicator). The hospital has been extensively rebuilt now, so i'm not sure if the lifts are still there anymore.

  • I remember these, with those orange lamps. We had some like this in Woolworths back in the 80s in High Wycombe. Haven't seen this model for years, thanks for posting!

By the way, what is that orange glow on the doors at 1:00? Is there direction arrows on the back wall of the lift car?

  • The glow is from the flash on my camera, it glows orange when in video mode. There is no floor indicator or direction arrow in the lift sadly.

Regarding Woolies in Wycombe, when did the upper floor close down? I'm sure i remember going up there maybe 20 years ago but only had the downstairs the last few years I've been going back there.

  • The lift was at the back of the shop, on the right (next to the cafe). It used to go from the shop to the open-air car park on the roof of the building. If I remember correctly, the lift only had 2 stops (the shop and the car park). The car park was about 3 levels up though.

I think the doors opened directly into the car park without a lobby area. The car park is still there, but I don't remember seeing the woolies to car park lift for years - maybe boarded up?

  • I will look for it in the car park on the roof next time I am in town. Might still be able to see something (even boarding?!)

  • That would be great! I should be in Wycombe in a few weeks for a wander around the Eden Centre (I want to get a vid of the Schindlers in there) so shall also have an investigate.

  • If I were to start up a "tourist bus for high wycombe lifts", tesco would be top of the list. The RH lift is completely original, wicked motor noise from the top floor!

Don't think my tourist bus would make much money though!!!

All the new lifts in the town centre redevelopment are Schindler, the old Newlands car park lifts (ex chiltern lifts and escalators) now have the schindler 'heavy duty' car operating panel.

  • Those tesco's lifts have character! Even the modernised one has the uniqueness of gaffer tape on one of the floor indicators. A far cry from the Gen2's you get in most Tesco's these days.

  • I like your "Tourist bus plan". I'd do one for North Oxon, but i've already put pretty much all the lifts on here already. and Oxford's just best avoided. Is there anywhere else you'd recomend around these parts for lift filming?

  • Bracknell, although, I've posted them all on here!

Depends what you are after, myself, I am not really into the new generation - I like to reminisce about the older lifts like the ones that I have filmed. For the older generation, to be honest they have all but gone! Maidenhead used to have some old ones, but they have now been refurbished.

  • Wow, how sad I am... some people reminisce about their childhood, I reminisce about old lifts in wycombe and Bracknell!!! LOL

  • Lol, i'm just as bad! I went to Paignton a few years ago for the first time in nearly 20 years, the only thing i could remember about the place was the car park lifts next to Safeways (i was probably about 5 at the time). To my joy the lifts were still there exaclty as i remebered, but the Safeway was now a Lidl.

i'd rather look for older ones, especially in old multi stories, they seem to have the most interesting lifts.

  • Have not been to Bracknell for about 15 years, i seem to remember some Keighley's in a shopping centre there, near a supermarket but could be mistaken.

  • They were Kone Maryatt Scott, later modernised then just called Kone. They had the giant buttons that Keighley used to install though. I did film these, but I didnt upload them for some reason. Will see if I can track them down and post them.

Remember there were 6 of these lifts? (3 each side of lobby?). The three on the sainsbury's side are still there, but the 3 on the other side were knocked down. Don't know exactly why, maybe there were too many lifts and they needed more room?!

  • Yes those are the lifts i'm thinking of, and i remember there being 6 of them. Shame they've knocked half of them down, but i suppose 6 lifts were not really needed there. They weren't exactly small lifts either.

  • Today I was in Winnersh (Nr Reading), so I popped back into Bracknell and filmed Princess Square lifts we are talking about. Uploading it now, part 2 tomorrow!

  • Also, I have just realized how quiet this lift realy is compared to other evans lifts.

  • Nice elevator, The reason I always know an Evans elevator is made by evans elevators LTD is because the doors always stick out and they open side ways. Great video, Reminds me of the Evans elevator at WHsmith in Lakeside.

  • I like this lift. It's so smooth it hardly feels like it's moving, alttough it is very slow. It used to have a sign saying about how slow it is, but this has now gone.

  • weird Capacity 10Persons 762KG? it's usually 750KG or 800KG
