He has been one of my favorites for a long time. Did ya-all know that Marty's mando is not a real Gibson? It is one that he got from Roland White years ago for 650bucks. Made by a fellow musician. All I can say is it has aged well and just thumps. Of course the player has " abit" to do with that tone!
JUST TO CONCLUDE FROM MY LAST COMMENT , MARTYS SHOW WAS PURE COUNTRY WITH A LITTLE ROCKABILLY, THE DRUMMER AND BASS PLAYER SANG TRUE EXQUISITE BLUEGRASS HARMONY, THE LEAD GUITARIST IS FANTASTIC AND FUNNY ...... A GREAT GREAT SHOW
IF YOUARE GOING TO ANY OF MARTYS' UK SHOWS YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT. I MEAN A BIG ONE !
THE MUSICIANS YOU SEE IN THE FIRST PICTURE HERE ARE TOURING UK JAN FEB 2011,
I WAS AT GATESHEAD UK ON JAN 29TH TO SEE THIS BAND , THEY WERE ON STAGE NEAR TWO HOURS AND IT WAS A FANTASTIC SHOW,AWESOME.
I HAVE NEVER BOUGHT A MARTY STEWART RECORD SO I LOOKED AT YOUTUBE AND THOUGHT ILL GO TO SEE HIM BUT ITS NOT MY SORT OF COUNTRY MUSIC, IM MORE A BALLAD GEORGE JONES TYPE...MARTYS' SHOW WAS AWESOMEHE HAS A NEW FAN.
Chris did win Winfield when he was 12... the pinacle of mandolin playing. Sierra Hull is good but all her stuff sounds the same to me. It's all in perspective of what a person likes.... I listen to Chris just because I happen to think he's the best
The best? I dunno....Monroe, Skaggs, Bush, Grisman, McReynolds, Stuart, Duffy, Lawson. They ALL played this tune. In their own unique style. The best? Save it for the Olympics. Music's not a competition sport.
Marty is great!! He has done a wide range of music and it's all great. But I like his mandolin playing most of all. I heard him play Rawhide on an old Bean Blossom bluegrass festival album. It is still my favorite version of the song. He was only 13yrs old at the time. Thats something after hearing a hundred others play it. He is a fantastic artist and a great guy. Thanks for the video!!
i had the ultimate privelage of seeing marty stuart tonight at a private venu called Dosey Doe here in spring texas, man what a badass, he was talkin about johnny cash and travis trit, his music is awesome and he finished it up with some good old bluegrass and gospel, what a trip
I've only recently become aware of Marty, saw his old show a few times where the editing made it look like he was just carrying a mandolin around for affectation and so I wasn't too impressed (couldn't get passed the hair and clothes). But this and a few other videoes have opened my eyes to his talent, what a musician and genuine devotee of this tradition. I have repented in my views.
Basically it's a one-chord piece in D, with an occasion bm thrown in. Could be a medley, could be something he made up on the spot. I hear traces of Lost Indian, and possibly the Lee Highway Blues or some train imitation piece. Brilliant sound, brilliant groove, brilliant conception.
Wonderful!!! Truly incredible !!! I think thats the Rawhide solo he did at 13 with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs if I'm not mistaken ..Ya when he was 13:)
@monkiman818 Apperantly you never heard Marty playing when he was 12 years old. He was making records at 12 with people such as Lester Flatt. What's your definition of "technical"? To me, "technical" is the ability to have your lead ride make sense and fit the song that you are applying your voice to. "technical" does NOT equate to the ability to play more scales.
@monkiman818 There are many who would agree. There are also many who prefer Stuart's style--or Skaggs' style to Thile's. Thile is amazing, but gets a little Yngwie at times. If you know what I mean. Yes, Malmsteen's amazing--but doesn't it give you a headache?
