  • Just because she has long hair and earrings doesn't mean that she's a hypocrite, being put together doesn't make anyone a hypocrite. Would you guys take her more seriously if she were wearing sweats on that stage?

  • @JupiterMars00 I dont believe she truly believes beauty is a myth if she puts forth so much effort to doll herself up

  • Naomi on stage in makeup, a skirt, earings, high heels, done hair, claiming beauty 'is a myth'. LOL

  • @landgabriel It takes a Nixon to go to China.

  • The irony is that naomi herself is hot in the mainstream way. If she had short hair, no breasts people wouldn't take her serious as a feminist: "Oh you know, just another one of those lesbians"

  • naomi wolf full of it. beauty as myth runs counter to the fact that beauty is an inherent part of biology. "Sexual Selection" amongst nature is not a myth... besides someone telling me what is it that a find beautiful is ridiculous. get a clue naomi wolf.

  • @romney27 She is not saying that beauty is a myth. Yes, beauty is apart of sexual selection. However, she is saying that our standards of beauty are unrealistic or a myth: nobody looks like women portrayed in advertisements, so it is an unrealistic standard that is nevertheless adopted. Even adrianna lima, the most beautiful woman in the world does not look the same without makeup and photoshop; yes, she is beautiful but not as out-of-this-world-gorgeous as she looks in catalogs. Get it?

  • @MaxThund I get that part. I remember when she was interviewed once on the radio and a guy called in with a question about what was an appropriate length for a woman's skirt in the work place. She proceeded to rip the guy a new one and acted like there shouldn’t be a standard for a woman's dress. It’s un realistic to assume that men and woman are not different. It was ridiculous that she would presume to speak as to what a man should find as beautiful was my point.

  • Hat off to Naomi for wanting to help young girls avoid the trap of thinking they have to look like a Barbie!!

Any girl/woman with dignity, a healthy sense of identity - and a healthy dose of common sense would not pose half-naked before the camera to begin with.

If (skinny) women were to stop modelling semi-nude, the fashion industry would go nowhere, and the "Barbie-syndrome" would gradually die out.

Happy people MAKE the best of what they have, rather than HAVING 'the best'!!

  • While Naomi does well to point out that beauty doesn't only mean: tall, slim, big breasts, perfect skin & long legs, she tries to make it seem as if women were poor, unwilling victims of the male-dominated fashion industry.

But no girl is FORCED to stand half-naked in front of the camera. If she chooses to cooperate because she has the 'ideal' proportions, she is equally responsible for perpetuating the myth...

The industry cannot take advantage of women unless... they cooperate.

  • To reinforce my point that Sexuality is natural and inevitable, let me point out that Naomi has long hair and earrings. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing her, I actually love her work warning us about Fascism but no amount of Feminism can make Liz Taylor on the equal level as someone who is not allowed to leave the Burn Ward. :)

  • I love Naomi Wolf's political insight. But I think she is mistaken. Not all people are beautiful sadly and the only remedy to that is genetic engineering.

The desire to be sexy and empowered because of it is both inevitable and natural.

Look at Naomi Wolf, she is GORGEOUS. I would date her in an instant. But just because I respect beautiful woman does not mean that I don't find Hooters girls attractive.

  • i see nothing wrong with dressing nice and keeping fit and in shape. I am naturally thin . However I see no reason to slather on makeup and get cosmetic surgery, unless of course that is your thing. I just dont think people should feel like they -have- to do that. My boyfriend hates makeup and yet i still feel like i need it..sigh. i want to get myself past that point

  • Pause it at :15 and you will notice a representative microcosm of what the population now thinks of feminist thought in general. Who looks upset? Who looks saddened and feels pity for her? Who looks bored? Who looks skeptical? Most importantly: Who looks engaged and in agreement?

  • Females employ a multi-billion dollar industry of cosmetics so that they might more effectively convince men into giving them their money, or to get preferences in hiring or promotions. Why is this? Because men and the corporate elite have conspired to "keep women down".

I salute Naomi Wolf. She has raised bitching to an art form, and makes a good living by doing it. It's not as easy as it looks.

She deserves a spot on Oprah. Or maybe a seat on The View. That would be fun.

  • @DrCruel What colour is the sky on your world? The vast majority of wealth in this world is still held and controlled by men, and with it the majority of political power & property. Even in the Western world women only earn 70cents for every dollar men earn.

If you had bothered to read her book you might have a more cogent and RELEVANT criticism than accusing her of "bitching."

  • @zammmerjammer Wah wah wah.

What did Crystal Harris do for her money, might I ask? Is she a computer professional? Perhaps an expert on steel production?

It's like Susan Faludi's bitching about uncomforatble female underwear. Evil men were responsible, and it was up to them to DO SOMETHING. Please.

It's no wonder that so many of these female pundits ascribe to the ideology of socialist parasitism. How's that for "relevance", Bright Eyes?

  • @DrCruel I enjoyed your employment of the classic argument of "wah wah wah." Marks you as very intelligent straight off.

Mentioning some peripherally-related barely-applicable anecdotes rather than provide anything to support your own silly assertions-- not my definition of "relevance", no.

Really, a busty blond Playboy bunny is the example you're using to illustrate the plight of all womanhood in this planet? Seriously?

  • @zammmerjammer Thank you for your insincere compliment. Now shelve your petulance and start dealing with the world like a grown adult.

The economic success of a busty blond Playboy bunny over, say, the best efforts of accomplished female executives, helps put the lie to Klein's assertion that feminine persiflage is a means of patriarchal oppression. Clearly some other motivation is at work.

Your obnoxious condescension and deliberate obtusity isn't winning me over. Try another tactic.

  • @DrCruel I am unsure if she is equating money with power here. Women are happier natural. Although, historically, women concern themselves more with their relationships and sense of happiness than with money and power, woman are associating now with money more than ever. Why? Many reasons. The shape of the family has shifted dramatically with divorce rates. Women need to be more "economically" independent of men now, even though that wasn't a major priority in the past.

  • @JaclynShawsOpenMic I would argue that women tend to pursue money making careers more readily now because they can. Big, strong men with overactive testosterone glands were once in strong demand, but now it's the more thoughtful, creative people that earn high incomes. In that latter contest, women are at least as likely to succeed as men. Likewise, in market economies, money is really handy.

Even a weasel like Naomi Wolf can make a buck, by exploiting the gender prejudices of women.

  • She truly doesn't know the real desires of men, but she has a good point media and advertisements brainwash people.

  • Women will always be objectified.

  • How do you know what mens deepest desires are if you're not a man? However I do agree that voluptuous women are more attractive.

  • @mephy7 : Because she's referring to the surveys that were carried out interviewing men?

  • How do you know what mens deepest desires are if you're not a man?

  • By the way I noticed the speaker is wearing makeup and a large percentage of the female audience has bleached blonde hair. Hypocrites?

  • @Castaril I don't necessarily think they're hypocrites. It's one thing to want to look your best, it's another to want to look like someone else. Some of the women in the audience may have been trying to live up to the myth, but many others may have just been doing what they thought helped them look presentable.

  • @Castaril Bleached? I think not. Maybe some, but I could clearly see most of the blondes had blue eyes which makes perfect sense to me.

  • I guess handsomeness is a myth too. I'm sure this woman would be equally likely to date a fat, balding guy with bad acne as anyone else.

  • @Castaril , actually, any fat balding guy with bad acne is a signal to women that his wallet is probably empty, thus why would he be fat (lazy), bald (bad genes or cannot afford toupee) and have acne (general slobbery).

  • @jess1up , don't toss the word bigot around so casually when you don't even know the context of my reply to Cataril.

  • @PungiFungi You're right I didn't even bother, my bad.

  • This goes MUCh deeper/further than most people can see. The Fertile Goddess/Woman was demonized by the patriarchal manmade bible. In manmade patriarchal religions... males actually birth life, while the "Mother" of "Jesus" is a virgin...huh? Women who follow christianity should REALLY use their brains and look at what they supporting... the demonization of the Sacred Feminine.

  • Real sad that most women fall pray of this "problem", that is because they are insecure, retards, we men don´t mind at all how "good" arnold or rambo look WE don´t give a rat ass about it, but women well they have to make a problem out of every little thing. Of course it´s all about big business, if you are an idiot, evil people will come an eat you alive. Naomi Wolf is a nice smart woman, I love her, but she is naive about the "benefits" of feminism.

  • @adrianfi7 you are clueless, let me go see if you are just a punk male kid, because thats certainly what you sound like.

  • HAHA adrian, you are not a kid, but a patriarchal manmade bible thumper... well that explains it. The bible INTENTIONALLY demonizes Women, bet you just love that.

  • @adrianfi7 Feminism is inherently wrong because it denies biological differences between men and women. It blames all disparities and differences of behavior on "culture" and society. The truth is that men and women are predisposed to different behaviors based on their biology, and this is what forms "culture" in the first place.

  • @Castaril Wow ... your idea of feminism is actually pretty wrong. Feminists acknowledge that there is a difference between males and females (whether those differences are a product of nature or nurture is still being debated) but while we acknowledge these differences, we also feel that females shouldn't be treated as lesser beings because of those differences.

  • @fauxpas84 You don't acknowledge the differences because you automatically attribute disparities between men and women to oppression and discrimination. By the way white women have benefited the most from affirmative action than any group. White women are the most privileged class in society, and always have been. When the most privileged class was given more entitlements their ego shot through the roof.

  • So what if Naomi wears makeup and is attractive? Naomi takes care of herself she is not arguing that women should not take care of themselves! Naomi is talking about the unrealistic expecations by a sexist society!

  • I'm a woman, and , sometimes i have seen porn sites, like brazzers.com. The thing is that in that particular site, the female porn stars an NOT thin, neither obese. They look like real woman and some of they are actually natural and they have big breast and buns, but , by obvious reasons, they tend to be THICK, not fat, but more heavy than a model and if models supposedly are beauty, why men turn to this pages for seaxual gratification. There is a myth!

  • Naomi has really packed on the pounds in the last few years.

  • I have the model body. And everytime something bad happens people say but your pretty. That doesnt mean Jack ! REAL BEAUTY comes from inside and having the freedom to be who you want to be.

  • Get away from mass media is the best policy for a multitude of issues.

  • she has a lot of makeup on, dontcha think?

  • not really.

    very subtle

and even if she did -- which i would argue she doesn't -- it doesn't negate what she says or make any of her points any less valid

    :)

  • If barbie type flashes of a Victoria's Secret ad gets you hard... THEN you're probably the type of man that doesn't know the difference between then and than.

    Nuff said.

  • We need to stop letting society dictate what a real woman is! This is the problem! I watched my friend die from anorexia, at 34 yrs.old, 5'4 she weighed 96lbs at her time of death..and I partly blame, the media for this!

  • Actually, all gay people think barbie is hot and would like to be like her. Hence why gay culture idealizes Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe ;)

  • detriplea: don't you care about how real women think about barbie?

  • I saw Victoria's Secret show today and I got sort of hard ( ya know). If you don't think Barbie is HOT, than you are gay.

  • Couldn't agree more!!!!

  • I just saw the Victoria's Secret catalogue today and was not impressed. Those women have the bodies of adolescent boys.
