There doesn't need to be many parties to have democracy. In capitalism all you can do with democracy is choose your oppressor, you can choose another party to exploit you. In communism you can choose different leaders, MP's, and all that, it is called the peoples' democracy. Even Stalin and Kim Jong Il were being chosen democratically.

As a Communist what matters first is that the working class, and the working man can participate meaningfully in economic decision making. That the worker can exert direct control over his/her production, without having to submit to a ruling class. This is the essence of freedom, and a fundemental human ideal; regardless of any particular political ideaology.

You clearly are a decent and humane person, but in the past many people calling themselves "communist" have committed atrocities as terrible as the fascists. In Spain in the 30s and Russia in the 20s, communists killed anarchists and other revolutionaries who would not submit to communist control. Then of course you have Stalin's purges, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia... This is why anarchists insist on a commitment to non-coercion, to non-authoritarian organizations!

@DailyBrusher I think you make a really good point. That's why I favor a cooperative rather than collectivist socialism, with democratic institutions along the lines proposed by Rosa Luxemburg. A new socialism for a new century.
I have nothing at all against anarchists, and hope to work with them. I think the Bolshevik policy of persecuting anarchists was baffling and revolting. However, I do honestly believe that anarchists can claim moral purity only at the cost of relevance.

I partly disagree with the idea of "fighting globalization." Yes, working people should oppose investor rights agreements, neo-liberal globalization, and outsourcing, however it can not be denied that actual globalization (people's globalization) is an essential component of the struggle for justice and freedom.

Socialism wont work because it devolves into communism then into a dictatorship. Its a wonderful idea, but thats all that it will ever be. Apart from the yearly 40,000 or so Americans who have been dying on behalf of the insurance industry, thanks to the efficiency of the free market in not providing them with a decent health insurance for the last couple decade, as they aren't allowed to enjoy universal healthcare like people from every other industrial country in the world do. There doesn't need to be many parties to have democracy. In capitalism all you can do with democracy is choose your oppressor, you can choose another party to exploit you. In communism you can choose different leaders, MP's, and all that, it is called the peoples' democracy. Even Stalin and Kim Jong Il were being chosen democratically.
