@baracine I still don't see where you're getting this line of thinking, anyone in law enforcement will agree that youth violence has many different factors, but books, movies, music and or video games usually have little impact. Psychologists all say that violence in youth is many times "learned behavior" or "environmental" that is the trigger. The causes can come from somewhere else, be it mob mentality, or economical, the root of such acts are beyond the scope of media influence.

I've played all of GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and half-way through GTA IV story missions. Once you get to GTA IV, you realize why the previous games couldn't incite violence. They're deliberately retro in design, are exaggerated and do not even attempt to approximate reality. They're dark humor. GTA IV feels like a different matter. It is very realistic in comparison, and lacks any real humor.

What is more likely here, is that the two boy were engaged in a kind of "mob" mentality, where there is a high level of aggression which typically lashes out at the nearest target, and here that target was one that posed the least threat. That said, what do those two teens face in the Australian legal system; a 3 max sentence? Or is Sharia law to be applied to them... if so, who gets to administer the punishment?

@baracine And what would you call comparing the acts here to something from Grand Theft Auto? Would that be satyrical or just insensitivity? My comment was a question as to the possible sentence the offenders could receive, and the other (while flippant) was a hopeful sentence that should be applied. Regardless of whether or not they are muslims! See that last bit was called "editorializing."

I happen to seriously believe that NO ONE would ever commit acts like these if they hadn't been exposed from infancy to violent and irresponsible video games like Grand Theft Auto. The evidence is mounting.

@baracine Ah-ha, that sounds like a valid position, I can appreciate that sort of comment. Thank you for clarifying. Perhaps you're right, maybe these two "pin heads" did think it would be cool to beat a wheel chair bound person into a coma, but to say that they got the idea from a game is as likely as a Chuck Palahniuk book being the source of their motives. But that would be an excuse. These boys made a bad choice, and there should be serious repercussion. Code of Hammurabi repercussion.

A better statement would be to take into account their childhood in relation to their parents/family, and other REAL factors.

@baracine why are video games the default scapegoat? Anti-violence groups from the 80's said that Bugs Bunny cartoons were causing kids to hit each other over the head with hammers, their arguments/research was proven wrong. There is little to no evidence to show any correlation between violence in media and random acts of violence. In fact the act of mob violence has many complex factors that contribute to their causes, and to boil it down to a game is trivial and without merit.

The hard evidence is that video games DESENSITIZE people to violence (see: msfu8YCCc8Q). In other words make perpetrators and spectators alike LESS ABLE to feel sympathy for the victim. Also look up the "horror film gene", a regressive trait that allows you to "enjoy" graphic scenes of violence when it is an evolutionary DISADVANTAGE to do so. In other words, people who enjoy graphic violence are actually LESS EVOLVED than the rest of humanity.

So the only option is to EDUCATE people like you to the consequences of violent entertainment. To equate "evolution" or the levels of "evolution" in individuals is tantamount to saying that certain people are more prone to committing violence then others. I'll bet dollars to donuts that the two offenders are known to police. In my experience gangsters and "wannabe gangsters" spend all their free time on the street, Not in front of a screen playing video games.

First, read up on the horror film gene, an evolutionary FLAW that allows you to enjoy scenes of mayhem (whether real of fictional) when your more evolved siblings have to good sense to either be afraid or to flee.

@baracine I still don't see where you're getting this line of thinking, anyone in law enforcement will agree that youth violence has many different factors, but books, movies, music and or video games usually have little impact. Psychologists all say that violence in youth is many times "learned behavior" or "environmental" that is the trigger. The causes can come from somewhere else, be it mob mentality, or economical, the root of such acts are beyond the scope of media influence.

There is a big difference between pressing a button on a controller and actually grabbing a metal bar and hitting a guy in a wheelchair. Ontop of that, video games aren't the only violent medium kids can injest.These acts of violence are more likely to be a result of poor parenting, or some sort of trauma experienced in their pasts.
EVEN THEN, sometimes people don't need to have a violent history to become violent themselves.

Poor parenting = allowing kids to play those video games. I agree that those games are just responding to the universal demand for violent entertainment caused by that gene deficiency and the unstoppable motive of profit. And NO, there is no difference between pressing a button and hitting a guy in a wheelchair. Once you are DESENSITIZED to the consequences - real or imagined- of your actions, they are the same thing for you.

As a Canadian I do not hold this against Australia, or decent white Australians in any way. Coloured people cause the majority of crime and violence in most white countries.

I used to be totally pro-immigration. The racist Indian press is turning moderate and left wing Australians against the notion every day! I believe most crime is not caused by the race of the offender but their economic background and needing to 'fit in', so they tend to join in gangs. Probably some also has to do with violent backgrounds in their home countries. I like multiculturalism, but I'm sick of the way it is being used to blacken the reputation of a multicultural nation.

Yeah, like: 5 of 6 Indians murdered in the last 12 months being killed by fellow Indians; when that Melbourne Indian was attacked on a train by another Indian; when that Indian set himself alight and blamed racist Australians; when the Somali youths put that Indian in a coma; when that petrol bomb was thrown through an Indian's window as part of a Lebanese/Indian rivalry; when an Indonesian hammered to death a Malaysian; when that Chinese family was murdered by Chinese organized crime; etc.
