  • tonight's gonna be a good night. whoo! today is august 12, 2009. and it's all over the news that there will be a Perseid meteor shower. hope the sky is clear!

  • LOL there is like 4 Major meteor showers Each year. August, November, December, and January. Then there are minor ones in March, April, June blah blah. they are there every day. you just have to be patient enough to stare at the night sky.

  • what comet sheds the meteors for the august show

  • can't wait to see it tonight!!!!

  • This occurs at the same time every year.

This year the best date is the night of Wednesday 12th/13th August between 9pm and 2am GMT.

Well for those of us here in the UK, not sure about anywhere else. Also it may be a little harder to see this year as the moon is almost full, but if you look just south of the moon after 12am you will be able to see Mars with the naked eye.

  • I love meteors; they're awesome! Can't wait for the big show! I'll be lookin' up tonight! :D FIVE stars!

  • Next meteor shower is this Wednesday, August 12, before dawn... The perseids

  • the earth passes through meteor streams on august 12th, and december 13th .. the next 2 decent meteor showers will be those dates this year , 2009

  • i live in newjersey will i still be able to see it

  • What if i am in italy specifically Siena? low lights countryside will this be a good place to watch in the evening since us time difference?

  • when can i watch the next meteor shower??

  • The next meteor shower is the Perseids on August 12, 2009. Comets shed the debris that becomes most meteor showers. As comets orbit the Sun, they shed an icy, dusty debris stream along the comet's orbit. Meteor showers are named by the constellation from which meteors appear to fall, a spot in the sky astronomers call the radiant. The Perseid meteor shower is so named because meteors appear to fall from a point in the constellation Perseus.

  • will it be all over the world

  • Woohoo yay thanks for letting us know :)

  • I live in Australia, melbourne, Victoria., times do not co-ordinate between here and the states. So will I be able to see the showers and if so, roughly when..Thanks for any info

  • Look i live in Holland (EU) and at August 12, 2009.i just go in night looking outside or do i need a scope?

  • It's Tonight! Good Thing I Took An Afternoon Nap! BTW CAN THIS BE VIEWED IN PHILIPPINES?

  • i was really excited for this years meteor shower. and i stayed up the right times from 12 am to 5 am. but i saw nothing D: i live in chicago. i guess its the city lights. will there be another one? i heard it was all week

  • And guess what. That day, is today! Horray!

  • YOU WERE RIGHT!!!

  • i saw em!

  • I saw what I thought was a meteorite just a minute a go, a slow white moving ball of light which burnt out after a few seconds over the West Midlands in the UK, is it common to see the odd meteorite despite there not being a shower schedualed?

  • yes... it is called a falling star or some people call it a shooting star... whatever u prefer

  • You saw a meteor, not a meteorite.

But yes, if you go out any night of the year (assuming there isn't much/no light pollution), you should see many each night. A meteor shower is just when there are more than normal.

  • Soon, each year it happens around the 20th of August on north hemisphere. It's the same date on south hemisphere but I'm not sure. To verify... During 3 days around this date you can make the best observations of the year, eyes naked.

But widly, summer is the best period to observe meteors. Just find a quiet place out the city. Have a sit and open your eyes to appreciate the show.

  • August 11, 2009 Just before the moon rises in the early morning (of August 12) until just after the moon sets.

  • NOW ;) just saw many

  • when is the next??

  • whens the next shower

  • when is the next???????

  • 12 August 2009, every year 12 August

  • that meteorite was on my birthday

  • nice

  • the music should be rocky mountain high, as the fire in the sky in that song refers to the perseids and decribes the beauty of it as good as words ans music can do.

  • ya i live in regina and i heard about the one that hit like lloydmminister and i just saw yet another one yesterday night!!

  • I was interested in this video because, on the 1st of August around 2 am central time (US) I saw the largest meteor in my life. It literally lit the entire sky and stretched from North to south emitting various colors in its trail. I hope to find some kind of footage online?
