@clayclaystout Bent down bolt is much more efficient, besides it was a cool brazing project. I have done two now and have never been happier with the way the rifle functions with the bent down bolt.
Your scope looks uncomfortably high... I would get it lower to the bore not only to make it easier to shoot, but it will flatten out your aim points at different distances.
any body who says not to modify them because of the history is uninformed of the fact they are arsenal refinished in russia before they are even sent here, hence why they are so friggin cheap. the historical value on most 91/30's is allready destroyed
I paid $89 for mine but have seen them for much more at other places. Nice job with the gun. I left mine 100% stock and do not plan on doing much with it except shooting. I might refinish the stock in a few years but it doesn't look to bad for its age. Also the safety on these rifles is a joke. I never use mine when it is in storage because it will cock the gun and then the spring sits there with tension on it. Anyway, nice gun.
@moneyman70301 Thanks for your Comment. I do have a lower scope mount on the gun and the safety ring was to help my daughter use the gun. You have to be a big strong guy to work the safety on the Mosen and My Daughter just could not do it with out the ring.
I gave it a thumbs up for ergonomics on the bolt and safety, but a barrel that short for hunting for a young girl ? It's going to blow her left eardrum out with muzzle blast Never shorten to less than 22"
@swenner64 Ah, just saw it. It looks good. I'm disputing w/ myself weather or not I should bed the old stock or get a brand new stock. I'm leaning on the new stock.
@MavHunter20XX I used the original because I still wanted the fell of the Mosin even though it is somewhat sporterized. There are some nice stocks. by the way did you see my modification of a 91/30

That's better brazing work than I can do at the moment...lol. I'm about to fix up another gun myself. Got a nice remington mosin receiver with a decent bolt on the cheap and I'm about to build a poor man's sniper rifle out of it.
@Iraqveteran8888 Eric thanks Brazing is not that hard. You need some good silver braze I use Berzomatic (sp?) silver nickel braze works great and I use a silver brazing flux that I bought at my local refrigeration supplier. Practice on a few bolt just brazing them together it is not hard to get the hang of it.
@adriandagangster It probably isn't but the price was much more in my range. Sorry you are bothered by my butchery of a gun that I paid 79.00 dollars for. Besides if I wanted a PU Scope I should have done thing to a 91/30 not an M44
Move your scope back, so it's as close to your eye as possible. U have room to move back a lil bit. Or invest in a longer rail, so u can move it even further. Or even better, fit an authentic PU or PE scope to make it "legit".
just a quick question. You put a bent bolt on it and are using a long eye relief scope set up? whats the reason for that? very nice job on the bolt by the way.
looks good except for your scope rings they are way way too high. walmart carry's weaver low profile scope mounts that would be perfect, and they are only like 10 bucks.
The only thing I liked was the safety ring otherwise nothing is going to make it more accurate that you did the safety ring won't either but but it's useful
@154Kilroy That is true, but the scope did help bring the group size down to about 3" at 100 yards which is tolerable for Deer MOA. Open sited was about 6". Maybe if I tried a better trigger I could get it down even more.
@palehorseone Thanks I actually took the idea of gwagner who used a soft silver solder. I could not get it to work so the hotter stuff worked great. Very strong. Thanks!!
@jamesrobertmey I drilled 2 1/8" holes in the lip of the safety handle than bent the 1/8" welding wire in a loop then stuck the ends of the loop in the holes that I drilled, then soldered them in place. works great!
Why did you put a mount that far up your gun AND turn your bolt? The point of those mounts is so that you don't have to turn your bolt. Honestly i am not criticizing, I am just curious?
@chase10chase actualy the long eye relief scope is for quick target aquisition and you shoot with both eyes open i still bent the bolt on mine so i could work it a little faster and it streamlines the rifle. you should check out the steyr scout its quite pricy though thats why i just built one out of a mosin for less than $300 usd
its would probaly help the screws stay in but i still its just a flaw in the design. there is to much pressure on the screw when opening the mosin bolt sometimes.
i bought the same mount and AIM scope for my 91/30 it is absolutely horrible. a friend of mine has the Rock Solid Industries mount that is a million times better and is mounted over the receiver so you dont have to use along eye relief scope
@Makakaov Not at all the Bent down bolt cycles faster because you do not need to bring your hand up so high it is a more comfortable position any ways with out the bolt being right in front of your face.
you do NOT need to but the rails in this video, on most mosin nagants there is a 3/8" dovetail under the rear sight. to take off the rear sight you tap out two pins. you will still need a long eye relief scope and high rise scope rings
I bought that scope mount for my mosin. Sorry to tell you but the mount and scope are horrible. The scope can't hold zero. You did do a really nice job on the bolt, but I don t know why you bent the bolt , because the scope isn't in the way.
@swenner64 You should check out a Jmeck scope mount. It requires no drilling and tapping, so you wont have to pay for that to be done...and its really solid. I've heard the screws on the ATI mount strip out really easily...so if you do go with that at least get some stainless steel screws.
@TheMokkan It is a Aim 2.5x7 32mm eye relief is about 9-11" It is not bad at all. I paid 36.00 with the mount on Ebay. The clarity is not bad at all.
As much as I don't like you for destroying bolt and front sight, I must say that stock is beautiful. I really hope you did your research first to make sure you don't have a rare variant...
aww......man you just wasted your time. did you take off the bayonet? it will never be as accurate with it off.point of impact will be off. i think? does it hit well?
@chevy2046 The scope brings it back to proper point of aim. I am getting 2" groups when used to get 10'. This is now a nice hunting rifle for my Daughter.
@marmaloon To make it into a sporter rifle besides once you put a scope on it the front sight isn't much good. by he way at least in my area home depot has quit carrying the silver brazing rod that I used.
@marmaloon okay fair enough my friend, :), there is a fellow who makes a really nice regular eye relief base for m44's and M1891/30's it uses a round the barrel clamp, and you don't need to get rid of the iron sights (save them for back up) :) - You probably could put a front post on there anyways, it's just a rod isn't it, on the M44/91/30?
I would have done it to a bubba to begin with but hey you learned some good metalworking skills. I always wondered if brazing messes up the heat treatment of the bolt body, would anyone care to weigh in on that? I have been working on my Russian Refurb SKS, purists would say I bubba'd it ( I had to put on an aftermarket Tapco magazine as the pin fell out of the original one, and installed an aftermarket Tapco gas cylinder, I also vented the gas cylinder.
according to the directions of a gentleman on the cast boolit forums, that worked really great! I did not like having the bolt and carrier coming back towards my face at 300 mph every time I pulled the trigger, I next plan on getting some 7.62X39 dies and .303 bullets and work up some loads, the cz surplus ammo has nice bullets, but is not so accurate
I also had a professional smith do a trigger job on her, and did a bedding job with shims and gasket paper, it made a difference too - forget about those recycled plastic stocks. Best regards all :)
@marmaloon Why not just do cast lead it works great for 7.62x39 Winchester makes cased for about 20 for 50 and lee makes a great mold for that caliber. use 14.5-15 grains of 2400 powder you'll love it.
@marmaloon It caused the stainless steel to slighty discolor, but I used a wire wheel and it buffed up real nice. With no damage to the bolt from the heat. The bolt is not super hardened steel.
@ddmo2 the only thing that I see that is 'permanent' is he ground off the front sight hood, can't see closer though, I don't know if the bayonet mount was ground off. . .I heard you don't really have to grind it off, the bayonet being on there only changes the mean point of impact of the group to the one side - SMLE's are known for this but not because of the bayonet, just because of the way the action is machined, the front sight on SMLE's is always off to one side to compenstate.
@marmaloon The area of the stock that was cut for the bent bolt is permanent, as well as the stock in general. Althought i will give it to him, he did a good job on the woodwork.
u said it was not very accurate then u bent and brased the new bolt on and made a hunting gun for ur daughter now it shoots 2 inch groupes ..lol how did that happen
@cedarpd As it was in it original configuration it shot all over the place. The bent bolt did not really have anything to do with Accuracy but it was more the sporter project. The scope made the biggest difference and floating and corking the barrel. Plus working up custom loads for her to shoot that were manageable. I got 2" groups. I loaded Sierra Gameking 303 bullet with 39grains of HVarget and got good results. The Bent down bolt was more a skill test.

why did u mount the scope so far ahead after u gave it a turn down bolt? there should be plenty of clearence for the scope after that mod. personal preference perhaps?
At this point I had the Scout mount so I went with it. I plan on putting a ATI mount and mount a better scope but I was surprised how well this mount worked. I got 2' groups with this mount, so it is not bad at all.
same here you have any advice on me before i attempt this. I want to do my own cause i have the hex reciever and would like to keep the matched numbers. I have the kit that involves drilling and tapping but i wanted something that was "braised".
I think it is great and I only paid 40 with shipping It is only 32mm but It would be fine for shooting and hunting. I got 2" groups with this scope with 150 grain sierra bullets and 39 grains of Varget.
I would practice on some steel to get the feeling of brazing. And you may want to get some silver brazing flux that you can coat the bolt and the groove that you are going to cut in the stub of the cut off bolt. This will help the brazing rod to flow in and around your piece. But practice for sure on something else.
looks great!

@swenner64 The fireball doesn't mean anything. If at all, it's wasted propulsion. maydayfire 1 year ago
Those scope rings are !WAY! to high! Buy some medium height rings. Nice bolt though.
huntwithairguns 1 year ago
@huntwithairguns Already did, Thanks for the suggestion
swenner64 1 year ago
nice work, and I'd say 2" groups beats 10" any day! PS - what is that black rack hung on the wall to the right behind your bench?
jpeditor 1 year ago
did you use mapp gas, or oxy/acetylene to braze the bolt handle?
WDtuber23 1 year ago
@WDtuber23 I used Oxy /ACetylene. Map would take to long to heat up.
swenner64 1 year ago
whats the point of having the bolt bent when the scope isnt even in the way ha
bassfreak0812 1 year ago
Hmm...whats the point in the new bolt when you scope is totally out of the way?
That's the only reason anyone gets that bolt.
Shonem 1 year ago
@TheMokkan It is a Aim 2.5x7 32mm eye relief is about 9-11" It is not bad at all. I paid 36.00 with the mount on Ebay. The clarity is not bad at all.
swenner64 1 year ago
No! It had no value other than my Daughter having a usable gun.
swenner64 1 year ago
As much as I don't like you for destroying bolt and front sight, I must say that stock is beautiful. I really hope you did your research first to make sure you don't have a rare variant...
MrNoobGuitarist 1 year ago
aww......man you just wasted your time. did you take off the bayonet? it will never be as accurate with it off.point of impact will be off. i think? does it hit well?
chevy2046 1 year ago
@chevy2046 No it shoots fine with out the bayonet.
swenner64 1 year ago
@swenner64 Wow, really? mine is usally way off but with it on i get like 1 1/2inch group at 100yrds
chevy2046 1 year ago
@chevy2046 The scope brings it back to proper point of aim. I am getting 2" groups when used to get 10'. This is now a nice hunting rifle for my Daughter.
swenner64 1 year ago
I don't get grinding the front sight off on a bench grinder though. . .
marmaloon 1 year ago
@marmaloon To make it into a sporter rifle besides once you put a scope on it the front sight isn't much good. by he way at least in my area home depot has quit carrying the silver brazing rod that I used.
swenner64 1 year ago
@marmaloon okay fair enough my friend, :), there is a fellow who makes a really nice regular eye relief base for m44's and M1891/30's it uses a round the barrel clamp, and you don't need to get rid of the iron sights (save them for back up) :) - You probably could put a front post on there anyways, it's just a rod isn't it, on the M44/91/30?
marmaloon 1 year ago
@marmaloon I have seen others on the internet talking the front sight sleeve off. Once you scope it you don't need the front sight
swenner64 1 year ago
I would have done it to a bubba to begin with but hey you learned some good metalworking skills. I always wondered if brazing messes up the heat treatment of the bolt body, would anyone care to weigh in on that? I have been working on my Russian Refurb SKS, purists would say I bubba'd it ( I had to put on an aftermarket Tapco magazine as the pin fell out of the original one, and installed an aftermarket Tapco gas cylinder, I also vented the gas cylinder.
marmaloon 1 year ago
according to the directions of a gentleman on the cast boolit forums, that worked really great! I did not like having the bolt and carrier coming back towards my face at 300 mph every time I pulled the trigger, I next plan on getting some 7.62X39 dies and .303 bullets and work up some loads, the cz surplus ammo has nice bullets, but is not so accurate
marmaloon 1 year ago
I also had a professional smith do a trigger job on her, and did a bedding job with shims and gasket paper, it made a difference too - forget about those recycled plastic stocks. Best regards all :)
marmaloon 1 year ago
@marmaloon Why not just do cast lead it works great for 7.62x39 Winchester makes cased for about 20 for 50 and lee makes a great mold for that caliber. use 14.5-15 grains of 2400 powder you'll love it.
swenner64 1 year ago
@swenner64 I'll have to get a luber sizer (want gas checks on there lol) :)
marmaloon 1 year ago
@marmaloon It caused the stainless steel to slighty discolor, but I used a wire wheel and it buffed up real nice. With no damage to the bolt from the heat. The bolt is not super hardened steel.
swenner64 1 year ago
Why?....
ddmo2 1 year ago
@ddmo2 I like it.
swenner64 1 year ago
@swenner64 I'll give it to you that you did a nice job on the wood, but everything else is just... bubba'd
ddmo2 1 year ago
@ddmo2 the only thing that I see that is 'permanent' is he ground off the front sight hood, can't see closer though, I don't know if the bayonet mount was ground off. . .I heard you don't really have to grind it off, the bayonet being on there only changes the mean point of impact of the group to the one side - SMLE's are known for this but not because of the bayonet, just because of the way the action is machined, the front sight on SMLE's is always off to one side to compenstate.
marmaloon 1 year ago
@marmaloon The area of the stock that was cut for the bent bolt is permanent, as well as the stock in general. Althought i will give it to him, he did a good job on the woodwork.
ddmo2 1 year ago
@ddmo2 yes of course.
marmaloon 1 year ago
god... you just ripped that thing apart didnt ya?
SGplayer3 1 year ago
@SGplayer3 It now is very nice to shoot. And My Daughter is thrilled with it. The bolt is incredible how nice it works and feel bent down.
swenner64 1 year ago
Can you describe what products you used to refinish the stock, I really like it.
hlasiy 1 year ago
u said it was not very accurate then u bent and brased the new bolt on and made a hunting gun for ur daughter now it shoots 2 inch groupes ..lol how did that happen
cedarpd 1 year ago
@cedarpd As it was in it original configuration it shot all over the place. The bent bolt did not really have anything to do with Accuracy but it was more the sporter project. The scope made the biggest difference and floating and corking the barrel. Plus working up custom loads for her to shoot that were manageable. I got 2" groups. I loaded Sierra Gameking 303 bullet with 39grains of HVarget and got good results. The Bent down bolt was more a skill test.

why did u mount the scope so far ahead after u gave it a turn down bolt? there should be plenty of clearence for the scope after that mod. personal preference perhaps?
psymonschaos 2 years ago
I wanted a turned down bolt which fells great. The scope is a scout mount and works great. I still might get an ATI mount and mount a regular scope.
swenner64 1 year ago
At this point I had the Scout mount so I went with it. I plan on putting a ATI mount and mount a better scope but I was surprised how well this mount worked. I got 2' groups with this mount, so it is not bad at all.
swenner64 1 year ago
they also sell new bolts just like that one for 30 bux online.
carriep4444 2 years ago
I wanted to make my own. More gratifying.
swenner64 2 years ago
same here you have any advice on me before i attempt this. I want to do my own cause i have the hex reciever and would like to keep the matched numbers. I have the kit that involves drilling and tapping but i wanted something that was "braised".
madeintheusaclan 2 years ago
also how does the scope feel on the rifle being midway?
madeintheusaclan 2 years ago
I put a lower mount on and I think the rifle is great. I actually like it. You don't feel like the scope is going to hit you in the eye.
swenner64 2 years ago
does it still have a good view through the optics i guess is what im wondering. But i like the not getting busted in the eye feeling
madeintheusaclan 2 years ago
I think it is great and I only paid 40 with shipping It is only 32mm but It would be fine for shooting and hunting. I got 2" groups with this scope with 150 grain sierra bullets and 39 grains of Varget.
swenner64 2 years ago
I would practice on some steel to get the feeling of brazing. And you may want to get some silver brazing flux that you can coat the bolt and the groove that you are going to cut in the stub of the cut off bolt. This will help the brazing rod to flow in and around your piece. But practice for sure on something else.
swenner64 2 years ago
there not new just someone else did it for you :)

@carriep4444

Looks nice.
