you know what would be cool is a lizard tank ontop of a goldfish tank with a hole as the lizard's drinking bowl that leads to the fish tank. and the lizard has a food bowl too #LOL
just curious, but when the goldfish is down his throat, is it like still alive? when it gets to the chest area, does it die then? is it like squished?
goldfish are junk food for monitors...almost no nutritional value, plus they can make monitors sick because they are usually raised in medicated water...stick to f/t mice
I have a savannah monitor but I am trying to get rid of him\, I wanted a pet and he is pretty cool and I like him but if I have to have a pet I can't hold i'd probably want something like this... cause mangrove monitors are awsome... and I like how there tanks are set up!
What do you mean a pet that you can't hold?!? You can and definitely should handle any species of monitor you just have to stop being afraid of it and start taming already before it gets any larger. It's always easier to tame them when they are younger so that they grow up not seeing you as a threat and are use to being around you. Savannahs are by far the easiest medium sized monitor to tame that you can possibly get in my experience in working with them, that's why I didn't want one.
How long have you had your savannah? How big is it and how big is its enclosure? Even if it's just enormous your savannah is probably going bat-shit crazy always stuck in there never able to get out and get some exercise. I mean come on man did you even research the monitor you were buying before you got it because that's just awful husbandry right there and I don't even know if you are providing for your monitor in any other aspects either. Take your savannah out and work with it!
He is 2 feet long, I still have him, His cage is 4x4x3, i have a vid of it. I never said I couldn't hold him, and I am damn sure not scared of him. I just get alot of shit from family memebers about how aggresive he is. Yes you can, hold and handle any monitor but they aren't going to like it. You can get them to be tolerant of yourhandeling but, eventually, the older they get the more aggresive, I let him excersize and every thing and he still bites and whipes me frequently... so.
Every reptile I have ever personally owned don't just tolerate being handled they enjoy being handled, when I hold my arms out they climb or slither up and want to just hang out. You have to build trust with them first and then you can work on getting to the point where they enjoy being handled rather than merely tolerate it.
Ok well I can't really say that is true for all reptiles. I have heard, I have even seen very tame savannah monitors but like people not all of them are going to be happy go lucky animals. Mine is not. And as for the reptiles, being what you want them, I know a guy who has raised his Nile from birth and spent countless hours with it. It is what he does, he raises reptiles and that is not an animal I would want to own. Even after how much time was spent with it. Same thing for certain snakes.
well then you should know what you are looking for when you buy a reptile. Often times there are insane baby and juv reptiles and there are calm ones. My sav was pissed off and bit people for like a week and has been tame as a dog since.
Wild caught specimens or imports, like your friend's nile most likely is since there have been very few CBB Varanus niloticus or Varanus ornatus ever produced in the U.S. are usually not going to calm down as easily as CBB or even CB specimens, but it's all about how you raise them and knowing what you are doing. With monitors especially, your level of experience, cognition, and dedication really shows.
Here's my point, I had a doberman pinscher had him since he was a puppy, one day he decided that he didn't want to play any more and bit my neice. That was fully trained dog. That was on snap command to sit, lay, roll over and go outside when you wanted him too. If I can't depend on a dog to stay sane i'm see no reason to trust an animal that really has no emotional attachment to any thing.
Well we are both entitled to our own opinions on the matter and I respect that, I'm not trying to argue about this. We both have an interest in reptiles and there is really no need to carry this on. Truce?
lol are you going to kill me? Sounds like a deal and, Also want to let you know its pretty cool you have that attitude about it. I never meant to argue so. Any ways, my point still stands that you monitor is awsome
LMAO Your Sav sounds pretty badass too being so hell bent on being aggressive and what not. I didn't mean to sound like such a dick at first, but sadly there are a LOT of people that buy monitors and have no idea what they are getting into. Well those people aside, you seem like a cool guy that knows his stuff. I've got a question for you, I've heard that over there in Florida they are requiring all newly purchased Varanus niloticus to be tagged but are Varanus ornatus required to be tagged too?
I don't really pay much attention to reptile news or any thing like that. But I think that pretty soon here all monitors are going to have to end up being tagged. I think up to a certain size. Ornates, Niles, Savs. Pretty much all monitors easy to get your hands on that could become a handful. The same thing with snakes because of what you said. So many people don't know what they are getting them selves into and when they end up with a lizard or snake that is potentially harmful,
Or something that is just too much for them, they end up letting them go in orange groves, or the everglades and I am not the smartest person in the world but, with all the poeple doing it, it might be a good idea to find out where these animals end up or how they are adapting.
Yeah I think some people are working to have all species of monitors and large snakes tagged in Florida. They have been working on "cracking down" (as they have been putting it) on reptiles over here in California as well, they're trying to make it mandatory to have burms, reics, scrubs, and Niles tagged, but so far they don't seem to be getting anywhere fast.
Yeah I couldn't imagine it would be an easy project. I know a girl with a retic. She told me she was thinking of letting him go and I flipped out. We are talkin a 15-20 ft. snake that she feeds pigs and she wants to let him go. I'm not thinking thats too good of an idea so i'm hoping that they can figure out something soon.
Oh man, yeah that's an animal that can could do some damage to a person unlucky enough to cross its path in the wild. If she put an ad up on kingsnake(dotCom) in the python section she could probably find someone that wants him in a week or two, and she could make some money on it. That's where I usually sell animals during breeding season for the guy I work for, when he wants more than a wholesale profit that the local reptile shops usually pay.
where did u get him???
