Love this shit ;-}> ~! .You guys really are funny .The truth is this ,many of the great match grip players do eventually relearn or switch to traditional grip when they get older & come to the realization that there playing is missing something . And that in itself says a hell of a whole lot about traditional grip & how drums kits & snare drums should really be played .
i play matched grip myself. but like "mikeleza" mentioned, the ghost notes are great for samba and jazz, escepially when you need to play ghost along with regular notes in quick succession.
it's all about personal feel really. a good drummer using tg could do just about anything another drummer can do using mg. the end result is music, and if you couldn't see the drummer chances are you would be able to tell which grip he uses.
I like matched grip though because it is more ambidextrous, (traditional grip is focused more on the right hand,) it opens up more space on the left side, it feels more natural, and it doesn't cause posture problems. Traditional grip causes you to hunch to your left after several years, you might not notice it if you're a casual player, but you can see Buddy Rich had a serious hunch after years from playing every night.
the advantages of tradition grip are zero, none, zip, nada. unless you just really want to gain acceptance with the elitist, snobby traditional grip aficionados.
otherwise traditional grip is just a great way of making learning drums 10x more difficult than it needs to be.
@mikeleza There are 3 advantages of traditional grip, none of which are good enough to make me switch (except maybe #3):
1: It is made specifically for a kit with toms on one side, because the stick is sideways, so it is easier to reach the floor tom(s).
2:You can play ghost notes better with your snare flat, you get the tip at a different angle, you can do that with matched but you have to angle your arm or the drum.
I use traditional grip and I can FEEL the difference but I can't quite put my finger on why it is.
When I play samba, if I play traditional grip once I move to the ride and play the snare open as apposed to a cross stick, it feels great. The snare ghost has the right feeling and when I strike harder it sounds more traditional BUT if I play match, I don't get that same feeling, it starts to sound funky instead. LOL
New Orleans shuffles sound great with trad grip too!
In other words: F*ck traditional grip!! The danger of injuring your back seriously is much more higher than with matched grip. But I don't get it: I'm very tall so I should have a higher range to the toms. So why did I injure my back so bad that I halve my 1st spinal disc? Any other people here with back injuries? Maybe I should start swimming and building up some muscles on my loin?????
@EvolRogg I heard you can fix this by bringing your snare higher. I still play matched for the left hand equality though. Traditional is easier for the left hand and that is why many people play it. But I don't want to have an easier time. I want to do it right.
@darthjoey13 My technique's good, also with the left hand. I don't think that people switch from matched to traditional grip because it's easier, no way!
@EvolRogg Don't you think to cause that you might have been doing something wrong with the grip? I mean look at the thousands of guys playing trad grip in their 70s 80s or 90s, who dont have back problems.... So saying F*ck trad grip because when you play it wrong you damage yourself is a bit like saying F*ck Ford cars because when you drive them on the wrong side of the road you always crash...
@drummerkingmike No, I was sitting too far away from the toms. So I had to bend forward too much, that's why I got problems with my spinal disc. But hey, today it's okay and I can play both grips on my drum set without hurting myself! I'm happy!
@drummerkingmike Yeah, in the first couple of weeks I was very afraid that, in the worst case, I have to quit drumming. This would have broken my neck, without drumming, life makes no sense anymore... =)
@EvolRogg No no, none yet, but I was just unaware of this danger so I figure i should just check Im not doing any unneccisary leaning, to prevent any injury in the future
@drummerkingmike Better be wachting from the beginning. You can definately get SERIOUS injuries from drumming. Just look at Phil Collings. Some say that he quit because of neuropathy of his hands. But the main reason is that he damaged his back seriously beacuse of his false playing position. Many pro's permanently need painkillers because their spines are killing them. But this is somehting nobody talks about, you know it's about jobs and reliabiltiy..... Greez
Steve! I am laughing out loud! Awesome! Love it!

I really wish I could train myself to play traditional grip, but my hands just can't find the power when I try.

You forgot ONE advantage:
The upstroke feeling is waaaaaayyy different compared to matched grip.
Biggest disadvantage is that the angle is so damn short.
I learned trad. grip because I like the differentiated feel while playing. But 3 moths ago, my back started to hurt seriously!!
Wen't to the doctor, he made a radiograph ==>
1st spinal disc is badly attrited.
So I'll have to switch back to matched grip again, otherwise I'll get serious problems.
