When Gerard was a kid, he was never really allowed to go outside, because there was deaths all around his neighborhood. Then, when he grew up, his grandmother, (the one who taught him how to sing and encouraged his art) died. So yeah, you could say "obsessed", but he's really just speaking from his heart.
