'Rolling on the river' means he's on the boat and gains a love for the experience with the good people he meets along the way. 'Big wheel'- is the boats' rear sternwheel and Proud Mary is the name of the boat- 'keeps on burning'- it burned coal.

Tina, great as always. I know it's not like the old days, but the old band played it better because its was snappier. I miss the horns playing on top of the beat. If this version are synth horn parts that would explain it. The back ground singers when Ike was in the band were were outstanding with their short skirts and the great moves.
