I am from the great state of West Virginia and prefer the term Mountaineer. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and raced this race every year. There were riders from all over the US, Canada and one year even Australia. There were different classes of riders including team factory riders. The race was limited to 500 riders.

I remember reading about this in my Dirt Rider magazine fresh off the shelf. This was pure torture on those riders and their bikes. I miss my XR250 ...): Growing up with Wharton state forest in your backyard was good times. Thats the Pine Barons in New Jersey.. People have gotten lost and died in the forest!

This is only a fraction of the race which had numerous other difficult sections over what could be at least a 20 mile lap. I did this race 15 times and always managed to make a lap and most of the time be in the middle of the standings as far as laps completed. There were other river crossing and wide peat bogs not seen by most spectators. One would be at least 18 or 19 miles into the race and tired. For this crossing Dave Coombs said "Aim for the spectators they are on the driest ground"

my dad told me about black water, they closed it because they said environmentalist said it was an endangered swamp. he said he rode an xr250 in it and it didn't do to well but when he got on the cr500 he said it went right through! :D
