I would love to know the connection bewteen this group and the NUMEROUS girl groups of the period with that same sound (exemplified by the Shangri-Las). I am the world's hugest Ellie Greenwich fan--and I swear I hear her on hundreds of these! She was associated with Steve Tudanger and Bob Crewe (although she claims that she met Tudanger in the "late 1960s"). I figure it's still possible, as Tudanger is only listed as a writer on this record. Any thoughts?
@jkeyes1000 These two releases by The Candy Girls on Rotate have my mind spinning too. When I sit and close my eyes, I can hear the lead vocalist and know that I've got some other records with her singing on them. Her voice is so very familiar. I was thinking of this when I pulled it out to be uploaded.
@reichardtaj The reason why this particular voice 'haunts' me over and over again is that Ellie Greenwich had a very unique tendency to go from soft and sweet to loud and almost blaring in the same phrase. I would characterise it as a sort of feline yodel, which is often attributed to Betty Weiss (of the Shangs), but which I believe was Ellie. As in "Give Him A Great Big Kiss", "Give Us Your Blessing", etc. It certainly makes no sense to think that 'Betty' did all that anonymous work!
@reichardtaj My theory is that Ellie Greenwich did far more vocal work than she ever admitted. Much of it on tunes that she wrote, produced and/or arranged, but also for other producers (Jelly Beans, Butterflys, etc., etc.). We all know she was extremely prolific and extremely versatile--and I think she took every opportunity available to her to make a little money on the side. Pseudonymity as the perfect tax dodge! So long as the producers kept hush, who would ever know?
@jkeyes1000 I have read that session singer Jean Thomas, (also of the Rag Dolls) believes that she and Ellie Greenwich sang background vocals for The Candy Girls singles and Mikie Harris sang lead vocals.
@reichardtaj That is mind-blowing! I never heard that rumour. I believe it whole-heartedly. As I haven't heard the A-side (or the other Candy Girls tunes) I can't determine whether the lead singer on this (B-side) track is the same on all of them, but--if Ellie Greenwich did in fact have anything to do with the group, I can give you my considered and somewhat 'educated' opinion that Ellie is singing LEAD on this one. Thanks for passing along the info. We might solve this mystery yet!
