Very interesting! Our guy, Gatsby, is allegedly a blue heeler/border collie/Australian shepherd mix, but being a rescue, we can't be sure. He has the leggy look and body type of a stumpy, but he's got a classic ACD tail and merle points. I've wondered if there's some coolie in there, but I guess it will remain a mystery!
@enohpesrep LOL, I understand! We may never know, but this is all just because I think it is fun to learn new things, and never about one breed over another. Sounds like you have an awesome mix! I only made this video out of curiosity. I tried to research, like most things, but this is the only video of it's kind that I could find! Or NOT find, that's the reason for the video. So thank you so much! I wish you and yours well, always! ~Kev & Nugget~
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Nugget's a standard Queensland Blue with a docked tail. Stumpies have Bentleys as well, but like you said they are a solid color all the way through. His coloring's similar to my girl's and from what I understand she's a purebred Queensland Blue Heeler.
@Moonspirit08 Thanks Luna, ;-) I did not realize that the Stumpys do or can indeed have Mr. Bentley's Mark but no tan color. Thanks! Man, am I in love with your Heeler! So smart, and you train so well! Amazing. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-) ~Kev~
Hey mate, an Aussie here ... I think you've got a Blue Heeler but there are many crosses between Blue Stumpy Tails and ACD's - your lovely boy might be a cross since I detect some finer features on yours that are common to Blue Stumpy's oft called Smithfields in our country also. I have an ACD and a Blue Stumpy cross with an ACD - amazing dogs and thanks for looking after one our own.
@Rikitocker First Aussie to comment! Nice! Thanks for the insight. Now what are the finer points you detect in Nugget? So if the Stumpy's are also called Smithfields in Australia, are they actually considered a DIFFERENT BREED as well? Even though they are related from Hall's Heelers, and both cattle dogs. If Nugget is a mix, that would be great, too! No problem, thank you Aussies for "Creating" what I think are the best dogs in the world! So, different breeds? Thanks so much ~Kevin~
@unclearless Hey Kev, to clarify, Heelers and Stumpies are different breeds. They are related and have common origins but at some point the two breeds went their separate ways. Stumpies have no tan markings at all, they are either blue speckled or red speckled - they are also a square dog, longer in the leg and finer than a Heeler. Stumpies are also born with the short tail, some are longer reaching no more than 4-5". I'd say your Dog is a Heeler due to tan markings.
@Rikitocker To continue ... I thought due to your dogs finer skull shape and short tail that he might have some Stumpy but on second thought I'm pretty sure you've got a Heeler - or at very least 90% Heeler. I've got a Blue Stumpy male that had a Red Heeler father/Stumpy Mother but he is 100% Stumpy - my female is a Blue Stumpy also ( littermates ) but she has a 5" tail. They are wonderful dogs and a real handful! So glad one of ours found a loving home - thanks!
@Rikitocker Thank you for sharing! I think more than just myself are learning things here! Now it would take 1 min. for me to look up what a "Finer" dog means, but can you please share so we all learn together here? I do agree, looking at other Heelers, I think Nugget has about 10% something else. I find it fascinating, and whatever Nugget is DNA wise, you could not ask for better! :-) I feel so very lucky to have him in my life. And thank you again! ~Kev & Nugget~
@unclearless Hey Kev, my pleasure helping out. When I say finer dog, Heelers are a chunkier dog, generally longer in the body than the leg than a Blue Stumpy. A Blue Stumpy is more square in shape and longer in the leg than a Heeler - they also have more high set Dingo like ears than Heelers do and a slightly different skull shape. Continued ...
@Rikitocker ... Stumpies are not Heelers also, only the ACD is termed a Heeler, Stumpies are just Blue/Red Stumpies. I have some pictures of my Blue Stumpies which might help also ... I'll see if I can PM them to you through your account. Cheers,
@Rikitocker - Something else I should add Kev, this has been mentioned by Aussie breeders and I can see what they are talking about - but it seems that ACD's bread within the U.S have taken on a bit of a different look to the traditional Aussie Heelers so there may be something in that in regards to Nugget also - something to consider?
@Rikitocker I am going to make a part "2" video because enough people now , like yourself, know that the Blue Heeler, and Stumpy Tail Heeler are two DIFFERENT breeds. Regardless of both coming from Hall's farms at first, and being related. But obviously crosses, like Nugget may be. As I research, TRUE Stumpy's were one of the most rare, only 50 left at one time! Thank God that has changed! You inspired me to make the only video on this topic. Thank you! Long live Heelers! ~Kev & Nug~
I've lived with these dogs since 1982. Blue Heelers, Queensland Heelers, red Heelers, are all names for the same breed; Australian Cattle Dog. Good job on the rescue. He seems like a well adjusted dog. They often don't like being restrained kind of like cats, lol. Sometimes a dock is done for tail deformation. It shouldn't be done otherwise, but that doesn't mean you don't have a nice healthy dog. I lost a red boy about 2 years ago to cancer and he was 17 years, with very little arthritis.
@flagwaver1969 Hey! Thank you so much for bringing up the skull shape, it really is VERY different! Could not believe the pictures I found. And I want to just give my condolences to your red boy. Nugget's only 2 1/2 now, and I already dread the day he is gonna pass on. Silly maybe, but he is like a child to me. Ya know, I thinks the books are wrong. They say they live about 13-14 yrs, but I keep hearing 17, 19, even 22! What is the real story with that? Thanks again for posting!
Nice dog. He appears to be an ACD with a docked tail. I say that because of the skull shape. Stumpies have more of a wedge shape from the skull to the muzzle. They have a finer build and are more leggy as well. If you have a look at some of the dogs on the Australian Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog Club of NSW, you'll see what I mean. Get the book, A Dog Called Blue by Noreen Clark. It is a wealth of proper history for both breeds.
@rcems629 You may be right, brother. How cool would that be? Two of the best breeds ever! I keep saying "Breeds" because the more I look, the more I find they are considered a different breed. Yet I'm not sure because of all of youtube, this is the ONLY video (I know of) that even brings up that specific question. I like puzzles, and have "Heeler fever" I guess lol. There seems to be an expert on every Heeler video I see, then I ask this question and...crickets, lol. BTW, your dog is incredible.
By the way cute ACD you have there. I posted in the Description area of my video a link to the Australian National Kennel Club so you can read what they say.
I think we both got a cross between Austrailian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog & a normal Australian Cattle Dog. No matter really, person I got Bandit from in Chester told me Bandit had stumpy tail at birth.
I believe he's a blue heeler. What I think is the issue with I dentifying it would be color pattern. I think that they have a random genes for fur causing a "Variegated" coat like rats or plants. Also he's got a chopped tail from what I researched as well.
@whatsnextnow19791 I think you may be right. I wonder if an x-ray would tell if he was docked (Chopped) or born with a stumpy tail? Of course none of it matters, I just find it very interesting! Even the research I have seen seems to vary...hmmm... Being a Rescue, we don't know what happened before he showed up at the shelter. Thanks for your input Random! (Yes I remember). ;-)
@unclearless I wish I had time to go back to Randumb_1's channel and do something with it. But for some reason I can never be in one place too long or do the same thing too many times in a row. Monotony has never been my thing. It's in my sign. I was also born in 79 so that makes me a goat according to chinese. That and I am always experimenting and trying to perfect my environment so I feel comfortable enough to do so. Still under construction here. No good cam either. Soon.
@whatsnextnow19791 I agree the color pattern is important. Vet there are so many other factors. As another brought up, the skull itself tells a story. And a true Stumpy tail cattle dog has a straight line from between its eyes to the tip of the nose. When I saw the pictures, it was obvious. Yet that does not mean Nugget is not a mix...? Thanks for the input, brother.
I have a heeler (Riley) that looks very similar, though he has no tan on him at all. We believe that he is a Stumpy but I don't think that it is considered a completely different breed, more or less just a manifestation of the genes through creating the breed over the process. Similar to how there are Apple Head and Deer Head Chihuahuas. I know that they are called Australian Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dogs but I am not sure if they are actually completely different. Check out Riley on our videos!
@Ppsican I agree, they both have similar genetic backgrounds, but some sites call them "Cousins". And I believe they are registered now as seperate breeds. One site says "1. The Stumpy's body is rather square, while the Australian Cattle Dog's body is a bit longer than high.
2. The Stumpy's ears are wider apart, and set higher on the head than the ACD's.
3. Stumpy's should not have any tan patches."
I LOVE ur Riley (and Hannah)! I think Riley is Stumpy without a doubt. :-)
He looks just like Ziptie and Ziptie is Registered Australian Cattle Dog. I don't like the tails docked either.
